My 'satiable curiosity forces me to ask, since I live — make that exist — in a small town in East Tennessee, what small town is it? Or, if it's fictional, about where is it?

John, my dad grew up in a hollow not far from Cade's Cove between Sevierville and Gatlinburg. The trail I talk about Hannah running is an old logging trail I used to hike in the woods that were across from my grandparents' house.

This conversation is for the book of the month which is 'Finding my Escape' by Fran Veal. There are other places where you can promote your book within the group but it's not appropriate to promote it here. Being respectful of each other is what makes this group such a friendly place for authors and readers to hang out. Please bear this in mind when plugging your book within the group.

Actually, it seems to be me that plugging books at Goodreads doesn't accomplish very much. It helps if one is doing other things, but hardly anyone wants to review other writers' books.Case in point: I asked what a person could do to market a book with a budget of $20,000. I got one response: a question mark.

Finished it. Liked it a lot. Is it too early to discuss it? I don't want to give any spoilers. First question for Fran, though: What made you decide to use first person POV for Hannah's character and third person POV for the others. (I went ahead and got the sequel, and I see you continued the third person POV for background on her parents.)
Good question, John. I've read several YA books with two or three first person POV's and I've found, personally, it's hard to figure out who's doing the talking. I would flip back and forth to see who was the MC for the chapter, and it really took me out of the story.I'd already used the third person POV for the killer in the first book, so I extended it a little for the second book to fill in some gaps and "show" rather than "tell" what was going on.

Yeah, I agree about switching back and forth among first person POV characters can be confusing, especially within a chapter. It's one of the reasons I prefer third person POV, with occasional first person thought-sharing. I can't say your shift detracts in any way from the narrative, but it is an odd shift in tone for me. By the way, I liked the ending. It was one of the possible scenarios I'd anticipated, but not exactly what I expected. However, the shift in scope in the second book was totally unexpected! Did you have that background story in mind when you started writing the first one?
John, I had an idea about Valeria in the first book and the characters of Michael and Haman, but the hook at the beginning of book 2 came after I'd finished book 1. I actually wrote 35,000 words of the second book and decided I hated it and was just regurgitating Finding My Escape, threw all but about 2,000 words away and started with the base idea I had about Michael and Haman and the "what ifs?" The Valerians were always associated with dreams in my mind, I just didn't know the exact connection until book 2.I love plot twists, and I really love throwing people off after they think they have everything figured out. As long as I can keep the characters honest, I'll twist the heck out of a story and throw as many turns in as I can without making the reader dizzy. You should see how book 3 starts out!
Well, way to go, Fran. It certainly "hooked" me. I'm about 20% into book 2, and I can't wait to learn more about Valeria and (okay, need to be careful about spoilers)...you know, the other stuff.

Fran, I'm only about 40% through the second book, having spent some much needed time on my own projects. I like the plot twist in Hannah and Matt's relationship. Won't talk any more about it here, though. I'll message you. As far as the third book, if you need beta readers, keep me in mind!
