Do we each list which book we are planning to read for each category? And when do we need to get this done by? Sorry, I'm a newbie to these challenges.

Hopefully Leah will chime in as it's her suggestion, but I understood it to be " "Essential" fairy tale or myth collection in the sense of something that's a must read, that's necessary for everyone to read who's interested in fairy/folk tales and myths. Of course like many of the categories, it's very open interpretation!

Tamara, there are no strict rules and lots of leeway!
Basically you have all of 2018 to read your selected books.
I'll probably set up the " 2018 Reading Challenge Progress" thread end of December.
In the past some of us posted what we intended to read in the beginning of the year and kept posting as we went along. There is no order in which you have to read your books and you certainly don't have to stick with what you originally decided on!
In fact part of the fun is comparing what we ended up reading instead of what we originally planned on reading!
Not everyone posts what they plan to read, rather just what they read.
It's happened to many of us that sometimes we read a book and realize only afterwards that it could be used for the challenge.
If you like check out the 2017 Challenge progress thread to get an idea. You'll see not all of us go about it the same way!

Yeah, I typically make this 'plan' to read certain books, and then end up reading almost entirely different books for the categories! But I like getting inspired by what others are reading, and it helps to organize my own TBR list.

So, I suggested this challenge item because I really liked it back when it was nominated as a theme (by Margaret) for a group read. Here's the thread. Margaret defined "essentials" as "books that are considered essential fairy tale reads that you haven't gotten around to reading yet."
It's a pretty broad category and quite open to interpretation as Lila already mentioned above. It could mean a collection like Lang's colored books or the Grimms. For novels, it could be anything by De Lint or McKinley.
In my mind, I'm thinking, what's the book that everyone's read except me **or** everyone says I have to read fill-in-the-blank because it's a must-read for fairy tale (myth, folklore, etc.) readers.

I remember that now, haha!

I've started selecting books for some of the categories. Do I just copy the poll in here and list the books I've picked so far?
Sorry for being such a novice, but I've not done this before.
Near the end of the year, we'll add a thread for keeping track of your challenge progress, and you can post your projected list then.
And after the first of the year, clicking on the above link will give a button that says you'll join the challenge, with a field where you can say how many books you're going to read for the challenge - be it all 12 or a lesser or greater number. That will also prompt you to create a bookshelf for hte challenge books, and as you read them, it'll be able to track your progress.

You can get an idea by looking at the 2017 Challenge.
https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...
At the bottom of it there are 2 features:
1." I want to read books for this challenge." and
2. "Enter a shelf name for this challenge:
So you put down how many books you want to read ( yiu don't have to read all 12) then you create a shelf in your books that has the exact same name as what you wrote in #2
When you read books for this challenge shelf them in the shelf that you created. As soon as you shelf them as having been read they will count towards your challenge.
For example I completed mine and this is what it looks like:

The 2018 Challenge is set up not to start until January 1, so you won't be able to create the shelf or put how many books you plan to read until then.
