Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Liking this atmospheric synthy number from HØRD:

"Lrn" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8MyN...

TheFoe | 2646 comments Hi Helen, agree with you about the vocals on the 'Cave' track by HAPAX. I think the trouble with darkwave/goth vocals in general, is that sometimes the singer tries too hard to sound dark and mysterious and ends up sounding a bit wanky. Andrew Eldritch got it spot on, without seeming to put too much effort into it.

The HØRD song was a good example of how to get it right imo. Nice track. :-)

Really nice Whispering Sons song. Can't find any info about the band, and wonder if the singer is male or female?

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Yeh Foe, the singer's definitely female! You can get pics if you put "whispering sons" into Google and then click on "images" at the top.

Here's one that (I think) is free of gender ambiguity! Another HøRD number, looking forward to hearing his album, released Sept.

TheFoe | 2646 comments Me neither Helen, music was ok though.

Here's one from BC Camplight, an American who moved to Manchester, from his latest album 'Deportation Blues'. I'm going to nominate this on the Cream of 2018 thread but as it's my favourite song of the year, I'll also put it on here. 80's vibe with a familiar sounding chorus.

'I'm Desperate' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYCiR...

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Yeh Foe, I've heard that one loads on the radio. I really like it too, great little indie/alt pop tune.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments I've been listening to quite a lot of new music from the darker, more industrial end of the techno spectrum. Some really good stuff being released at the moment. Here's just one example:-

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments The Soft Moon will be releasing a remix version of his latest album at the beginning of Nov. His previous album that got remixed was excellent so hopefully this will be too, although different people are doing the remixing this time.

And another new song from Whispering Sons, which'll be on the album out in Oct. Really like this, great post-punk.

TheFoe | 2646 comments "Like A Father (Imperial Black Unit Remix)" - Soft Moon. Really good track, enjoyed this the most. Not the first time I've liked a Soft Moon track, will have to give their other stuff a listen. Are there any of their albums that you'd immediately recommend Helen? :-)

Enjoyed the other 2 songs as well, might have enough tracks on this thread to make a decent Darkwave cd.

Saw this gothic cd compilation the other day on Amazon, and thought it worth a look. Plenty of goth bands that we know, and some we might not, but not using their obvious hits, which is a good thing. Bit pricey though.

Takes the mick Suzy, especially when you think how cheap they are to produce. I'll probably still get it though. :-)

message 128: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Sep 30, 2018 02:33PM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Well, I can't seem to find it any cheaper elsewhere online so Amazon would appear to be the one to chose? It's at the same price at HMV and is only a couple of pounds cheaper on Discogs but that doesn't include the cost of p&p which would surely make it around the same price or dearer ;o>

You could risk sticking it in your Amazon Basket to see if the price drops? - but you will also have to brace yourself that it may go up instead to eBay's prices.

There is also a Review on it on The Quietus that is worth a read ...

I really like "Deeper" and "Deeper Remixed" but also the earlier albums and EPs. Sorry, that's not terribly helpful. I would offer to do you some copies but my disc drive is buggered. Maybe you should have a look at his stuff on Bandcamp, stream it for free and see what you like best before buying anything: https://thesoftmoon.bandcamp.com

I was going to get that when it was released, but for some reason never got round to buying it. I don't think you'll get it cheaper than that, it's out of stock on Cherry Red & they might not do a re-print. It's not too bad a price for 5 discs.

You might like these little comps too, Foe. They're just short ones but fairly reasonably priced (marketplace seller) on 'zon at the mo. Don't be put off by the title & artwork!

Sorry Helen, I completely forgot to reply to your last post. Thanks for the links. :-)

A couple of tracks, one from 2016, the other from this year.

The Agnes Circle - 'Porcelain' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-78y... (2016)

Bragolin - 'Into Those Woods' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EJM2... (2018)

The singer from Bragolin sounds a bit like Morten Harket.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments One of my friends only moved to the village a few years ago. Her husband is Norwegian (she is Scottish) and he had to stay on in Norway for work for a while when she moved here. She kept talking about "Morten", her husband, which conjured up images of the lovely Mr Harket & I was looking forward to meeting him. So, I was rather disappointed to find he was no oil painting & 10yrs older than my friend :-( (he is a v v lovely chap though, & a good friend).

TheFoe | 2646 comments Hi Helen. This isn't to do with dark music, it's just something that Amazon recommended to me and I thought it might interest you, as there are bands on it that I know you like.

message 141: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Hi Foe, thanks for thinking of me. I did see that when it was released (good old Cherry Red: btw it's cheaper direct from them) but it is still on "the list" & it'll have to stay there a bit longer. Some amusing band names on the tracklist.

Did you ever get round to getting their "Silhouettes & Statues - A Gothic Revolution: 1978-1986" compilation?

Hi Helen, I haven't got the "Silhouettes & Statues - A Gothic Revolution: 1978-1986" compilation yet, but plan to buy it some time soon. I quite like the look of that Manchester cd as it has some decent bands on it. The thing I like about both compilations is that they've steered clear of the obvious choices and gone for the more obscure songs.

message 143: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Yeh, there's some good bands on that Manchester comp (& a few I've never heard of before). Cherry Red also released a "Liverpool" one but it doesn't look as good (probably 'cos there's quite a lot of bands I've never heard of on it!):

DIVE - 'Let Me In' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLM5R...

message 150: by TheFoe (new)

TheFoe | 2646 comments Yeah definitely one of their better ones Helen. Their earlier material and first 2 albums were really good, wasn't too keen on 'Vision Thing' though, not goth enough for my liking. The alternative nightclub I went to in Bournemouth, the Pit, played pretty much the same music every week. Alice was always on the playlist, but so too was The Cure's 'Friday I'm In Love', which I hated.
