Petra | 3324 comments I finished A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. and really enjoyed it.
This dystopian story of man's comeback after a nuclear disaster is touching and surprisingly humorous, especially the first section.

Chrissie I do like Robert Hellenga, but The Confessions of Frances Godwin is not one of his best. I have put a big effort in trying to explain clearly why.

PattyMacDotComma The Soldier's Curse shows 1825 Australia and the British penal colony in Port Macquarie, NSW, warts and all. It's the first of a series that Meg Keneally and her father, Tom Keneally, have planned to bring history to life. I've got to say, I'm sure glad I didn't live then!

PattyMacDotComma A Plague of Angels by P.F. Chisholm (aka Patricia Finney) is another entertaining adventure with Sir Robert Carey through 16th century London. Plague, jealousy, swordfights - what's not to love?

Petra | 3324 comments I am currently reading my way through the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy omnibus. I've completed the first two books:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which sets up the premise of the full story very nicely
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, which as the best "end of the Universe" scene and situation. This is one marvelous restaurant.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I read Battle Cries and Lullabies: Women in War from Prehistory to the Present by Linda Grant De Pauw.

De Pauw presents an overview of the roles women performed in warfare. She doesn't get into much depth partly because of the paucity of available documentation in the early centuries and partly because of the wide scope of her book. But it is a good survey with extensive notes and bibliography available for those interested in researching the subject further.
