At the end I decided to go on and finish Beloved by Toni Morrison. By sure the worst book of this year and most likely one of the worst books ever read. I'm sorry for who loved this book (and there are a lot) but it didn't work for me, not at all. If there are two afterwords to explain the book, then I think the author didn't do a good job. In my opinion a reader has to understand what he is reading. Of course I understood the main topic (I'm not that ignorant), but the writing style, the allegories, the metaphors, etc. there were too many and so it wasn't a flowing read. And then the fact to talk about things that haven't been eplained yet (most likely to make the reader curious), as if the reader should know about them, made me so angry because I had to wait till they were explained. No, this is a writing that doesn't work for me. Reading must be a pleasure, not a struggle among allegories, metaphors, and jumping from past to present or viceversa.
dely, you explain what didn't work for you well. I gave one of her books three stars--The Bluest Eye. Beloved I gave up on.The author is not a favorite of mine either.
Chrissie wrote: "dely, you explain what didn't work for you well. I gave one of her books three stars--The Bluest Eye. For a group read, I read Raymond Carver's short story Cathedral, which was curious indeed. It is the title story of a collection that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. I included a link to where The London Magazine has published it online.

I have finished another by Edith Wharton-- The Glimpses of the Moon.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
dely wrote: "Chrissie wrote: "dely, you explain what didn't work for you well. I gave one of her books three stars--The Bluest Eye. Beloved I gave up on.The author is not a favorite of mine either...."OK. I usually, but not always, want to give an author more than one try.

Of Human Bondage, the first I read by W. Somerset Maugham I gave only two stars. The same is true of The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow. I have discovered by reading other books by these authors that I like both of these authors a lot.
This isn't to say that I plan on reading more by Toni Morrison. ;0)
