dely | 5214 comments Finished a non-fiction about mental diseases and how Ayurveda deals with them: I disordini della mente nell'Āyurveda (no English edition).

Following Ayurveda, mental disordres can be caused by an imbalance of the dosha and in this case the therapies are softer (an appropriate diet, massages with medicated oils, ayurvedic medicines, purifications, etc.). More serious mental diseases are due to possession: by divinities so they are positive (for ex. look at Theyyam dance), or by asuras so the therapy is stronger and in addition to ayurvedic medicines there are also tortures (well, till not a long time ago we had lobotomy and electroshock!). In both cases, with mental disorders by possession, also prayers and yajna are important.
It was interesting but I wanted something more actual. It was as if I have read a book about Western psychiatry written in the 17th century.

I put off reading A Little Life because I’d heard similar comments, but I read it last year and absolutely loved it! There is a lot of love and some very real people that I will never forget.

Angela, I think about Jude, too, and I also think about William and the others who created their own extended family and how they managed to overlook or forgive each other’s shortcomings.

Petra | 3324 comments I found The Spencer Mansion: A House, a Home, and an Art Gallery on my bookshelf. Since I was going to Victoria for a few days, I thought this would be the perfect book to read on the ferry and I was right. This was a fascinating look at an era, through a house & it's residents.

I've just finished A Moment Of War, the third of the trilogy by Laurie Lee. This one is set in the Spanish civil war. I've preferred Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell, but also this one is interesting for a knowledge of a part of history thaat I don't particularly know well ...
