Yes, she is my favourite Brontë sisterfor this--did you get a copy that was based on the original before Charlotte made some post-mortem edits? (Anne died before she was 30 as I recall, but I know for sure that Charlotte took out the most controversial section(s) ).

That said, I still really like Jane Eyre.

PattyMacDotComma I do love a good short story, so I'm glad that Amazon is publishing originals from many different authors. In the Empty Quarter by G. Willow Wilson is a scary little cautionary tale I enjoyed.

PattyMacDotComma They broke the mould when the Artist Known as Prince came along. This is another of the Little People BIG DREAMS series. Author Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrator Cachetejack have produced a bright, appealing children's book

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Finished The Wedding of Zein by Tayeb Salih, translated from the Arabic by Denys Johnson-Davies.
A delightful novella about life in a Sudanese village and the village idiot who turns out not to be such an idiot, after all.

PattyMacDotComma Return to the Most Beautiful Village in the World is a bittersweet follow-up to Japanese artist Yutaka Kobayashi's previous two picture books about a little boy who left his war-torn village in Afghanistan.

Kobayashi says we must inspire the children!

PattyMacDotComma I finally read the first book of the much-loved Monkeewrench mystery series by mother-daughter duo P.J. Tracy. People and plot were every bit as good as I was told. I'm delighted there are more!

PattyMacDotComma Heartstone is the fourth in the excellent Matthew Shardlake historical mystery series set in King Henry VIII's very bloody England. Author C.J. Sansom seems to know his stuff (excuse the academic terminology) about the wars of the time.

Hi Karin--sorry for such a late response. I think I got the original The Tenant of Wildfell Hall--it seemed to be comparable to what I heard from others who had the original, but it was a library copy so I'm not sure. That phrase "post-mortem edits," it gives me the shivers! What an awful thing to do!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The People in the Photo by Hélène Gestern, translated from the French Emily Boyce and Ros Schwartz.
An old photograph triggers a search for a long lost parent. A poignant story about the role of memory in identity formation.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished Educated, an excellent memoir. One feature I particularly liked, which I didn't address in my review, is the way Westover included notes about when her memory of certain events varies from that of one or more of her siblings or when she is not sure whether she is confusing 2 different but similar events. This aspect (a result of her education in history, I presume) made me trust this book much more than I did The Glass Castle, for example. Highly recommended, 4.5*
