Jacob Moon (writerjake) | 4 comments A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles Just finished A Gentleman in Moscow...a historical fiction novel about a man serving a lifetime of house arrest in a hotel near Red Square. Fascinating glimpse into the post-Soviet revolution, as it related to purging of anything considered "artsy" or those associated with the humanities. Count Rostov is a colorful character, the world he creates within the confines of the Metropol hotel seemingly a world within itself. The prose slowed down a bit for me around the 4/5th mark, but the final twenty pages of the book made up for it. Think Count of Monte Cristo, meets War and Peace, meets Casablanca. Toles is a talented writer. I recommend this one to any historical fiction lover.

Kathleen | 401 comments I need to catch up! Here are a few recent reads:

Close Range by Annie Proulx Close Range by Annie Proulx contains the iconic and wonderful Brokeback Mountain, but was otherwise a little too much Wyoming for me. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Time and Again (Time, #1) by Jack Finney A very fun time-travel story: Time and Again by Jack Finney. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Freedom Hospital: A Syrian Story by Hamid Sulaiman; translated by Francesca Barrie.
A graphic novel blending fact and fiction about the carnage and devastation during the Syrian civil war. A heartfelt attempt, but I didn't think it was entirely successful may be due to the nature of the medium.

PattyMacDotComma Death of a River Guide was the absolutely stunning 1994 debut of the 2014 Booker-winning Aussie author Richard Flanagan, and I loved it. The wilds of Tasmania's Franklin River - terrifying and beautiful!

PattyMacDotComma Countless readers have loved the thriller I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes, and I wish I were among them. I did read nearly 300 pages before I gave up, though.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Whispering Muse by the Icelandic author, Sjón. It is a curious blend of fiction with mythic elements. I thought it was quite good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as The Blue Fox.

PattyMacDotComma The First Stone: Some Questions About Sex and Power is by one of my favourite Aussie authors, Helen Garner.

Men AND women; men VS women? This 25th anniversary edition includes other writings about Garner and the lively controversy over the indecent assault scandal.
