PattyMacDotComma Silver, by Aussie author Chris Hammer, follows investigative journalist Martin Scarsden from Hammer's popular mystery, Scrublands. He's perfectly captured my part of the beautiful NSW North Coast, with drugs, backpackers, developers, politics and murders. A good read.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Finished Disoriental by Négar Djavadi, translated from the French by Tina Kover. It won a lot of writing awards in France. It captures the immigrant experience of an upper class Iranian family forced to flee to France. I thought it was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the narrator's voice. I highly recommend it.

PattyMacDotComma A favourite author is Aussie Sulari Gentill. I love her historical mystery series, and this episode, Gentlemen Formerly Dressed, is a treat! Rowland and his mates are in 1930s London, trying to elude the Nazis. It's a great mix of high and low society, politics, and murder in pre-war England.

Joy D Short poetic book about loss and friendship:

Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson - 3 stars - My Review

message 6024: by Joy D (new)

Joy D Omat, a young Inuk living in the arctic in the 11th century, inhabits the soul of a hunter and the spirit of a wolf. The author weaves together a pleasing mix of historical fiction, magical realism, mythology, folklore, religious beliefs, and both Inuit and Norse traditions. The story is a compelling and creative journey of self-discovery and survival.

The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky - 4 stars - My Full Review

PattyMacDotComma What's not to like about a selection of chapters from upcoming books? Publishers Lunch puts out a series of previews which I always look forward to, and Buzz Books 2020: Fall/Winter is as good as ever. Something for everyone, including non-fiction.

PattyMacDotComma I recently read Missing William Tyrrell by Aussie investigative journalist and author Caroline Overington. It's a thorough, sensitive look at the puzzling and ongoing case of three-year-old William's sudden disappearance in 2014.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Stay with Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀. It is set in Nigeria. The narrative unfolds through the alternating first-person voices of a husband and wife. The plot is well-constructed with shocking revelations interspersed throughout. The narrative weaves elements of Nigerian culture, traditions, customs, and folk tales. I thought it was very well done.

Far Tortuga by Peter Matthiessen - 4 stars - My Review

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Break by Katherena Vermette. A dark and intense intergenerational family saga that sheds light on the plight of Métis women in Canada. The story is very powerful; the language, beautiful; the execution, problematic. This is not an easy read because of the nature of the subject matter.
