Back at work, with a terrible back ache, since I've stayed all day in front of my PC ... and I'm not done yet!
Now it's time I stop and go to my beloved swimming pool!

Definitely. Although I now forget where my white fillings actually are.

I hope your back feels better soon!
I'm quite fine thanks all.
I'm a bit tired every now and then, but that's because I find myself, as usual, with the work of two weeks to be done in two days!!!
And in 4 days I'll be off again, but this time for fun: I'm going a wekk in Malta!!!!
Sunshine, seaside, but also Caravaggio, excavations and cultural sites. I'm really looking forward to it!!!

That's sounds fun and will be a great thing to do after all of this :) !
I count on it!! I love beautifull seaside and sightseeing, and Malta looks as if it's the combination of the two! I'll let you know ...

I hope you have a wonderful holiday. I love Caravaggio so I am a bit envious.

Do come to Italy then; in Rome - even if he had so many problems with the Church - we can still admire many of his frescos and works! La conversione di San Paolo in Santa Maria del Popolo is even better than the painting cycle on San Tommaso in San Luigi dei Francesi. In my opinion, of course!!!!

Last time we were in Rome I had that Caravaggio on my list but after taking my husband to St Peter's, the Capuchins' and a few near the Pantheon I reached my husband's quota of max 5 churches per trip :0)
Santa Maria del Popolo is on the list for next time which will be soon as we both love Rome.

Remember to call me in advance: Perugia is really close to Rome - about a couple of hours by car. We often go there and we could easily meet. And if you organize it, you can think about coming to see me in Perugia: the city is not famous, but I sincerelly think it is worth a visit. To mention only few things we have a Raffaello, and, of course, several Pinturicchio and Perugino!!!! But there's many more things to see, trust me!
Thanks Marina!

I'd completely forgotten about that one, so thanks for sharing it!!!

Back to work after my week in Malta, I've discovered that I wil be the secretary of the new Deputy Mayor for CUlture till he finds someone from outside!!!
Who else?
Who else?

Who else?"
How was Malta?
And how is the Deputy Mayor for Culture? Will you like working with him?

Malta was beautiful - even if, as being half Sardinian the seaside is not as beautiful as there!!! Anyway, only to see Caravaggio's Decollation of St Giovanni Battista is worth the flight, in my opinion!
The new Deputy Mayor is exactly on the opposite political side of mine - we have confirmed a centre-right coalition. But work is work, and this man seems, at least at first sight, to be polite, competent and respectfull. We'll see later on. But anyway I'll have to be his secretary only for a short period, no big deal!

That sounds great! Are you at the U of MD? (I checked where you are).
We toured one of the campuses with my eldest, but she wanted a smaller school, but my son's trumpet teacher's daughter is heading there as a percussion major this fall.
At any rate, sometimes it's fun to know someone on GR is in a place that's real to me because I've been there :). We stayed the night with friends on one of those oddly names streets from a novel, but I can't think of it right now--it's actually outside of Baltimore in one suburb or another (outside of that ring road).

Actually I'm at Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore. We are part of the University of Maryland system, but since we are smaller than many of the schools (about 8800 students) we get those students who want that smaller school feel. They can get a lot more personal attention and don't get lost in a crowd. Our campus is a registered arboretum campus and our dining services has earned a number of awards. We sit between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean (great beaches) and are close enough to DC, Philadelphia, and NY City to be able to enjoy all those larger cities have to offer. But then we can go back home to our beautiful Eastern Shore. I head up the Interdisciplinary Studies program, specifically the Individually Designed Track.

Drive safely. Have fun!

That sound excellent! My daughter wanted to major in math, so we looked at the campus known for math. She ended up getting a full tuition, fees, room and board waiver at a state school here, so took that (good in math, if not ranked up there with some of the other schools--you can't knock nearly free!) She was in the UMass system (University of Massachusetts) but after one or two years the housing was grandfathered in because they took that away from the award she got for all future students. Her freshman roommate had the same award in a different major.
I just set up an archive for our previous readathons, I think looking back at the numbers are really interesting.

A full ride is a great offer; one you can't turn down. SU has some great programs - our business school is top notch, Environmental studies ranked the best in Maryland, and we graduate the highest number of women from our Computer Science program. Most of the time employers don't look that closely at the school you graduated from. Graduate programs do, but not employers (that much). Very successful people graduate from state schools.
Waiting the Deputy Mayor for Culture, who I'm helping inhis first days here, with something like 50 mails to read ....

And yet I know of one woman who turned down that exact same offer (a couple of years older than my daughter) to go to a private college :)!
And I agree about how great state schools can be and that they can help. If it weren't for a generous scholarship, my son would be at Rhode Island College with the same trumpet teacher but not all of the same opportunites as in Boston (plus he had this teacher for nearly 3 years prior and his teacher said 2 more years would be best not 4 more with him).

Someone in the U.K. is making vodka from grain grown near Chernobyl. The article caught my eye because our non-fiction book this month is about the catastrophe.

Not a chance, but then I don't drink any vodka. But even if I did, not this stuff!
