Marina (sonnenbarke) Thanks, Heather. I'm glad she's okay and, as Chrissie said, I hope her family is, too. Obviously she doesn't have to stress or worry about Goodreads, there's a time for everything and I think we all understand that this isn't the time for her to write in here. I'm sure she knows she's in our thoughts and that we will be ready to welcome her back as soon as she feels like writing again.

Leslie | 16369 comments A brief update - my mother was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is now in the rehab center of her retirement center. Hopefully she will be able to go back to her apartment in a week or so. At least now her friends can easily visit her!

Happy to hear that Leslie, hopefully she will be well. It's so lovely her retirement centre has a rehab unit, we definitely need more things like that in the UK

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments It was a relief to hear at least something of Terri. Thanks, ladies.

Good news about your mum, Leslie.

Heather, in AU, we have retirement villages where you first move into a normal unit. As your needs progress, you move into the part-time care units then full-time nursing. (I think Leslie's mum is in a similar USA village.) It's a brilliant idea. It means to older person has really only one major move, and remaining within the same village is definitely a plus.

Yes that is exactly it. Here it has a fancy name I can never remember correctly -- "continuing care retirement community" or some such. There is even a section for people with dementia such as Alzeimer's (but only open to those who develop it once they are part of the community due to lack of space & nursing staff).

message 715: by Pink (new)

Pink Leslie, I'm glad to hear your mum is out of hospital. It sounds like she lives in a good place, with lots of support for different stages. Hope she gets back to her apartment soon.

Good news then Leslie. I still have problems with my aunt: she is rather old - even if not that old, she's 77 - but she is almost blind and can't hear well.
Her daughter has just had her second child - the first is only 3, so plenty of things to do, also considering that this secon one, even if she's fine, has been born without thyroid.
But she flatly refuses to have help in her house. I don't know what to say to convince her that we'd be all be much more relaxed knowing she has someone bumping into her at least once a day!!!

Joan Continuing Care Communities can be a great retirement option. BUT,
You need to carefully check the business plan - in the U.S. although Fed and States oversee the health care side of the business only a few states have regulations for the financial side.

My Dad looked into one in Florida that looked great until you realized that once the majority of residents became elderly or infirm, there would not be enough money coming to cover expensive costs.
Essentially it was a pyramid scheme licensed by the state!

Some are set up to create financial buffer, but you need to check.

A good warning but not needed in my case. My dad had carefully investigated this before he put his own mother in care at this place and again before they decided to move there themselves 30 years later. But it is very expensive - I was shocked by the monthly fees when I first discovered what they were!

Yes, my two Aunts in Connecticut were very happy in the two different Continuing Care Communities where they lived.
My family’s experiences made me glad that I live in a state that has specifice requirements for financial plan disclosures. Not all places have that.

I like the SF and adventure books
My favorite book is the sword of summer by Rick Riordan

I like SF and adventure too! I haven't read Riordan's books (yet) but I can recommend Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series - plenty of adventure and sci fi :)

message 722: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 756 comments I also like SF and would recommend the Expanse Series starting with Levithan Wakes

My boyfriend loves it and keeps recommending it to me, but I'm not a SF fan at all, so I'm a bit hesitant.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend as well Angela.

This will be the first family holiday without my sister, not that we celebrate many. Just Christmas and Easter. My sister is a nurse, but I think she gets a good pay tomorrow, so that is why she offered to do it.

We have snow and flood warnings here as well but my particular area will most likely get the flooding.

message 740: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Have to do mine and my sons this weekend, so I understand the relief you feel even getting one done, Leslie.

Glad you are feeling better Ruth, and were able to rest.

I managed to crack one of my bottom teeth on a piece of Carmel corn a few days ago. Infection set in and I have a large painful lump on my jaw line. Dentist took me yesterday, and started me on antibiotics and gaveme some much appreciated pail pills. Saturday I go back so he can dig out the shards below my gum line, which are causing the infection. Not fun, plus I have a dentist phobia.

message 741: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Sorry to hear about your tooth Diane! I also have dentist phobia so I can empathize with how much more difficult that makes it.

I lost my voice for a while during my bout of flu and 5 weeks late it is still not back to normal, which is a problem as I do a lot of singing.
It did improve a bit when I took a couple of sick days off work and did little else but rest.

message 747: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ The dentist's office called me today and asked if I could come in at 1:30, so though I dreaded it, I also wanted to get it over. The numbing shots are wearing off and now I'm in quite a bit of pain ,he had to do a lot of digging. Drugs will be my friend for the next few days I imagine.

B, it was pretty terrible. Can't believe so many of us have dental phobia. I do like my dentist and once I'm there I'm okay, it the thinking about going that gets to me.

That sounds terrible Joan. I hope your voice returns to normal, quickly.
