Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments @Anna & Allison, what are the plans for figuring out the 2019 reread schedule? Just curious. (Can you tell yet that I love finding out about systems and rules and protocols? Probably has something to do with why I love all kinds of games so much.)

message 303: by Anna (last edited Aug 26, 2018 03:29AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I posted the 2019 plan here. It'll be its own topic eventually, I wanted to make sure people had a chance to comment before it's too late.

And yes, I also like knowing how things work!

message 304: by Anthony (new)

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Thanks!

message 305: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Since it's so unfortunately hidden on the previous page, here's the 2019 plan again, comments are still welcome, it's not too late to have your say!

Starting in 2019 we'll be voting and scheduling for three months at a time, and the poll will opened closer to the start date.

Voting will take place in:
- November for January-March
- February for April-June
- May for July-September
- August for October-December

Schedule will be posted by the end of the voting month. That'll give you 1.5 months to get your hands on the first books.

The polls will be closed at the end of the voting period, but opened again after the schedule is posted. Votes cast during this time will not affect the official group rereads, but you can use it as a tool to gauge interest for potential extra buddy reads. All votes will be cleared about a week before the next voting period starts.

Gabi | 3441 comments I have Dirk Gently on my TBR and look forward to re-read the book that got my sis and me into the English romantic poets.

message 308: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I also kind of want to reread Dirk, but I don't know if now is the time for that.

message 309: by Anthony (new)

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments I’m reading “The Eye of the World.” One of my good friends has been urging me to start The Wheel of Time so this is a good opportunity to do so.

message 310: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 869 comments I probably won't read Eye of the World again, but I will definitely follow along. I've read that book so many times, it's always nice to see it from the perspective of new readers.

I've been wanting to read Dirk Gently for a while now. I'm not sure if I'll have time, but I'll try to get it from the library.

I'll be around for Eye of the World. Hoping this will be the kick in the pants I need to finish this behemoth.

Pat the Book Goblin I should probably join that BR too. I've been hearing great things about the Wheel of Time. I have a used bookstore near me so I'll have to check it out.

Or if you have access to Amazon US, Sarah, our friendly neighborhood book pusher, informs us that it's on sale in Kindle today! Join us. Find yourself committed to 14 books all large enough to hunt with!

message 314: by Anthony (new)

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Ahhh Allison you just made me laugh out loud very loudly. Thank you for that!

Pat the Book Goblin Haha they are very large and in charge!

Hmm. The sale is relatively minor as ebook sales tend to go. $120 USD for 14 books instead of $140 USD. So $8.57 per book instead of $9.99 Unless I’ve missed a sale?

message 318: by Anthony (new)

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Oh I see, the sale is only for the first book. Never mind...

Pat the Book Goblin My used bookstore sells paperbacks from anywhere from $1 to $3.

Maybe look for used bookstores near you to see if you can find a good deal! If you're trying to get all 14 books get whatever they have and use amazon for the rest?

Yeah, sorry. They want to reel you in. Although CBRetriever advises that it's possible to get the whole collection for under $100 (I think significantly less than, but my memory isn't trustworthy enough to guess) if you're patient.

My poor old man eyes could never imagine reading gigantic tomes such as these in what I would guess is pretty small print paperback editions. Its ebooks for me all the way. But since I’ll be spreading these big bad boys out, I can also parcel out the expense over time.

Pat the Book Goblin Haha ebook large print...got it ;)

message 325: by Beth (new)

Beth | 211 comments I'll be reading along for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. My library hold came in so I'll pick it up in a few days.

I’ve already read both within the past 12 months, but I look forward to spying on the discussions. I’ll be in for Children of Time next month.

Allison wrote: "Find yourself committed to 14 books all large enough to hunt with!"

Ah ha, so that’s why the second book is called The Great Hunt. Don’t forget the prequel. It isn't suitable for hunting, but it would be useful for self defense against small to medium insects.

LOL, YouKneeK! How could I forget the Great Flyswat?

Amanda, don't worry. I started EotW with a buddy read in...April? and they're all on something like book 7 or higher. You take all the time you need!

message 328: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 869 comments Well I was able to get the Dirk Gently e-book from my library with no hold, so I think I will start it right away for some humor after Midnight Robber. I'll post my thoughts on the threads.

I'll be with you. I'm also reading Midnight Robber at the moment and Dirk Gently is waiting on my analogue shelf.

If you are actually patient, I hear there are these things called public libraries that let you borrow their books.

My friends George, Charles, and Noah advise me that you probably should use analog if you mean "non-digital". But I like the way you think!

I kind of jumped the gun on Dirk Gently and finished it in 2 days, but I'll be following the threads if anyone else plans to join in.

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Here are the rereads starting October 15th.
Will you be joining?

Children of Time >> First impressions | Final thoughts
The Eyre Affair >> First impressions | Final thoughts

message 336: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I finished Children of Time last night, I finally read it! All I'll say is that if you don't have a problem with spiders and bugs, you'll probably love it. If you do, you'll need anxiety meds! If you make it through though, you might end up liking spiders a little bit more? The audio was great.

message 337: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 659 comments Definitely in for Children of Time. Haven't read it yet and really looking forward to it. That's up next!
Hopeful Eyre Affair, if it comes in from the library in time. That's a reread though, so more likely to get bumped if I run short on time.

message 338: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I had been planning to read Children of Time this month, but I decided to wait. Somebody in the “Which new releases are you most looking forward to?” thread pointed out that a related book is being published next year.

Even if Children of Time stands alone fine, which I assume it does, I’d rather wait and read them together. It’s not like I don’t have anything else I want to read. :)

message 339: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments It’s definitely a stand-alone; I’m curious how (and why) he continues the universe as I didn’t think it warranted a sequel, but since I love his SF I’m reading it anyway, haha.

message 340: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 8 comments I really enjoyed this book. I’ m still afraid of spiders though!

message 341: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Rereads starting on November 15th.
Are you joining?

The Neverending Story >> First impressions | Final thoughts
The Lies of Locke Lamora >> First impressions | Final thoughts

Also remember to vote for 2019 rereads!

message 342: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments The first time I can get a book from the library! Yeah! (Although the first reaction of the librarian upon my request for Neverending Story was "oh, I don't know if we have this, this is such an old book" ???

message 344: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments I’ve had it for a while as well so will join the reading :)

message 345: by Bobby (new)

message 346: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Anna wrote: "Rereads starting on November 15th.

I’ll be joining for The Neverending Story, although by “joining” I mean I’m going to stay far away from the discussion threads until I finish reading the book myself and then I’ll read them all and comment if I have anything to say. :)

I actually plan to start it later tonight, because now is the time when it fits best in my schedule. I know nothing about the story, so it will hopefully be a fun surprise. I love going into things blind.

Pat the Book Goblin I loved Lies of Locke Lamora. One of my favorites I read this year. Just pay attention to the flashbacks so you don’t get confused on when the “current” time is vs the past.

The Neverending Story >> First impressions | Final thoughts

While I have your attention, remember to vote for 2019 rereads! You have until Nov 25th.

Also make sure you've voted in the last polls of 2018, the scifi poll has been very tight since the beginning. Remember that you can change your vote. Voting ends at Nov 15, 2018 11:59PM PST. (So go vote for Zhang! :P)

message 349: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments Thanks, Anna, I must have completely missed the December poll! I did wonder why there was no news about what we were reading :D

Is Lies of Locke Lamora a re-read? I have it on audio but apparently not noted it down in my calendar.

message 350: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Yep, Locke and Neverending are the November rereads :)
