Has anyone else watched White Christmas yet? Danny Kaye and Vera Lynn dancing are grand. My gramma loved the dresses. Between White Christmas and Grumpy Old Men and Hogfather, I'm sorted for movies.

Not yet Granny, but I will - probably on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Tonight it was Bing in "The Bells Of St Mary's". How lovely was Ingrid Bergman?

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Granny wrote: "Has anyone else watched White Christmas yet?..."

I don't think I ever saw it. I think I saw Holiday Inn some time around 1977 but the memory is very hazy and it might have been White Christmas.

message 364: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I was thinking yesterday about school-days Christmases. Having two weeks to do nothing. Watching every movie Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin ever made, which seemed to be shown in the mornings of the Christmas holiday every year. The only place to see those now is on Youtube, and I did watch The Music Box a few weeks ago.

I was never an Enid Blyton fan, but I loved The Christmas Book and read it every December until I was about 15. When I read Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius Quartet a little later I acquired another habit of rereading Chapter 10 (The Mirror; or, Harlequin Everywhere) of The Condition of Muzak as close as possible to Christmas Eve. This is a habit I seem to share with at least one other person ( Christmas Eve - The Condition of Muzak ).

Still here, Suze. Been making paper hats for the party, though struggled with one for Derek! I wondered if people might not have stuck a couple of plasters over the Santa puncture and stuck up an identikit image of the suspected murderer. It could have been turned into a murder mystery event like no other.

Was at no 1 son's last weekend - a small village outside Milton Keynes. Real village life there with carols around the village Christmas tree Saturday evening - so we got some practice in! Mulled cider in the local pub (although at inflated price).

Just thinking of mottos to go on those hats now!

"Christmas Cake Calories Don't Count"

"I am not a murderer, I'm just a very naughty boy"

"Yodel-ho-ho-ho"

"And so they told me per hum-hum-hum-hum"

"The Grinch who Killied Christmas" or

"Happy Christmas you Jakey Waster"

"Silence in the Library - or else..."

???

Martin O' | 2196 comments Thumbs up Gordon, I read a lot of Moorcock years ago, the Jerry Cornelius books and offshoots among others. The Cornelius universe was brilliant, a sprawling madcap concoction of characters and stories that swept you along, continually shifting time and space without following any logical sequence of cause and effect. Turn the page and you never knew where you would be transported to next yet it all hung together wonderfully and enthralling. Also recommend Dancers At The End Of Time trilogy and anything with Elric in it. Ever read any Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar series? The adventures of Fafhrad and the Greymouser are some of the best in a genre a lot of which is fairly mediocre, predictable and badly written.
Piers Anthony Of Man And Manta is another good read IMO.

message 371: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22144 comments I know it is inconsequential, it's weird and it is possibly unique to me, but I struggle with the salutation "Happy Christmas". I say it should be "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year". I can't even say it's the pedant in me (never far from the surface) as I doubt there's any rules on what the correct greeting is. However, I shall (always) be wishing folk a Merry Christmas.

P Cobb | 580 comments Happy Easter
Happy Birthday
To those in USA, Happy Hollidays
............ Christmas

Think both Happy and Merry work, although when writing cards I won't write 'Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year'.
Perhaps as with 'Ding dong merrily on high' the meaning of 'Merry' has changed somewhat over the years, so it now seems as though to wish someone a 'Merry' Christmas, you are saying I hope you remain pleasantly inebriated throughout the Festive Period!

(Actually, many other adjectives can be applied anyway:
Joyous Easter
Memorable Birthday
Horrendous Hallowe'en
Frugal Christmas
Prosperous New Year
????)

"He sprung to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew, like the down of a thistle:
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight-
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

So there you are,
Have a GOOD Christmas, everyone.

Festive snow here as well as yourself, Grach. Only thing was it fell Boxing Day night and all through the night. So that stopped it qualifying as a 'White Christmas'. It led to accidents on motorways, though and severe disruption.

Getting warmer again later today. You'd think we'd get used to this British weather after a lifetime of it!

Christmas pud and trifle (not in the same bowl) - mmmm, my favourites!

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Happy Friday 29th, P! ;o>

I am about to travel by Train to Stockport from Cumbria today to be able to spend New Year back at home with my M&D - so please keep the Snow where you are as it has been threatened here for today and I want to go home!

I came to spend Christmas with my friend only to find a serious Mould problem in his new Flat (a new build that he only moved into in late July) was so bad in the Bedroom that I not only had no Room but no Bed to sleep in either!

I might possibly have found somewhere to stay at the local Inn but apparently a very nice couple called Joseph and Mary got the last available space and, what with her being in the family way with the son of God, they obviously had to take priority ;o>

So I've been sleeping on a borrowed Mattress on the Floor in my friend's Front Room with him sleeping alongside me on a Sofa Bed! - LOL!!!

I can hardly wait to get back just so that I can get to sleep in my own Bed and in my own Bedroom once again! I honestly don't mind camping out but I'm not as adaptable as I used to be before I became disabled - and my friend is not a good sleeper at night-time and, when he does sleep, his snoring almost raises the Roof! I need to have darkness and blissful quiet to get to sleep - he has to have several Lights and also the Radio on all night long ...

Stockport, I'm a'coming home!!! ...

P Cobb | 580 comments Susie: I have read that Cumbria copped it with a white deluge! Hope you managed to escape. The forecast was for temps to rise here yesterday. HA! We had a prearranged meet up at friends' house fairly nearby, but temp of 0 meant our road was treacherous and like an ice rink, as was the road at t'other end of journey. Then minus temps on return journey. It has served to keep snow hanging around here, but not the snowman-building type.
Our friends are big on games at our meet up (as are we) so great fun as usual. Ever heard of 'Linkee' or 'Chain Reaction'. Some raucus jollity and not overly fuelled by alcohol as I needed to drive home. It is one of our annual highlights of each Festive Season. TV? Who needs it?

Your experiences of Christmas ring a bell. We cooked turkey at our own house and took it and rest of food up to my Father in law's house (long since deceased) as more room to lay a Christmas table and a warmer place since we had the central heating fixed. Did the same Boxing Day but then the snow fell. This house is in a higher location so always receives worse weather. My wife is currently on crutches following a foot operation. The return journey consists of steep hills. With ungritted roads, low temps and little traffic about, we took the decision to stay put for safety's sake. This entailed 'camping out' on settees and chairs with whatever quilts and blankets we could find. It'll certainly be one of our more memorable Christmases!

Grach: Boxing Night and following eve saw a 2-parter called 'The Miniaturist' on TV. A period piece set in Amsterdam, the costumes were superb. Highly enjoyable and, I think, right up your street (or canal) if you get the chance to see it.

Suze: yes, Happy Wednesday 29th!

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I did it! - I made it, P! ;o>

It rarely ever gets to Snow in Barrow as the overall climate and the Sea air seems to prevent it somehow from happening(?) but there was quite a bit of Snow from Ulverston to Carnforth which is where the Trains often get caught out by the weather conditions - and Grange-Over-Sands Promenade and the lovely tiny harbour at Arnside just looked so beautifully festive as we passed them and over the Sea Bridges.

There were quite a few Sheep out grazing on the Marshland parts as usual, while the tide was still out, and I suddenly realised that I've never actually seen Snow covering the Sands leading out to the Sea before now, so that was a delightful first for me ;o>

My Train was the second to last one running today as part of the Manchester Railway Line will be shut for a few days once again while they finally finish off connecting up a new part of it called the Ordsall Chord.

This means a long walk between a couple of Stations and also Rail Replacement Buses which unfortunately do not allow for or permit any Disabled Rail passengers who have Wheelchairs to use them - and so if I had got stuck anywhere it would have been such a nightmare to try and get myself the rest of the way home.

Thankfully though, my Direct Train made it safely and on time all the way through to it's final destination of Manchester Airport.

M&D were SO pleased to see me back and my two adorable little hairy woofers went absolutely nuts with joy as I came in ... it really was such a wonderful 'movie-moment' homecoming. I'm just unpacking by degrees and checking out too that my Laptop has safely survived the journey ... and, as you can see, it has! ;o>

Is she managing to stay reasonably mobile and pain-free and is everything looking to be healing well? It's a rotten time of year with the increased risk of surging Sales crowds and slippery Pavements and Driveways to be out when you have any kind of mobility issues and I do hope that she will be back to being as fit and as active as she normally is just as soon as possible ... x x x

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I know some forum members live abroad. Is anyone in Germany? If so, will you be watching Dinner for One? Although I lived there for 6½ years I was always back in England for Christmas & new year. I only saw a recording of Df1 once, well into January, and never got a feel for the Deutsches Silvester.

Granny | 93 comments I'm so glad everyone is safe and snug now. Camping on floor beds is not great after you leave your 20s. I need darkness and quiet to sleep. I wear earplugs as we're in town on the main road. Lots of lorry traffic.
Today I had lunch with my daughter's bf. No one will go to HuHot Mongolian Grill so I had my first HuHot experience. Oh my, it was tasty. The Khan's Revenge, Burn Your Village, Five Village Fire sauces on the meat and veg were peppy but good. I put some curry sauce on too. My daughter has intestinal issues so she can have no spicy food as well as no dairy, chocolate, or mint. I guess I'll be his HuHot buddy from now.
We have bitter cold here now with wind chill dangers. Our high temp today was 0F. 15-20mph winds made it brisk even with sunny skys. Wisconsin weather in winter can be amusing with the poofy hats, coats, gloves, and boots. Think Finland. :-) I'd fit right in there.
Stay safe and warm, everyone. 🐌🐌🐌☕☕☕

Susie: I took her back to hospital yesterday for the 3rd dressing. Toes still heavily swollen but surgeon happy with progress. Although they warned they would be keeping an eye on it for some time to come and was likely to be another dressing for about a fortnight, he removed toe pins and had simple plasters put on. Told that as from this morning she can now actually get the foot wet which will be heaven to her.
Needs to wear supportive shoes now rather than the surgical boot, still needs to rest it so travelling in back of car still. To suit herself, can reduce 2 crutches down to 1, then none as she feels able. With no extra protection she feels the foot is extremely vulnerable and started to feel faint as pins were pulled out. Next appointment in 6-8 weeks, so all going well. Told the swelling could last for up to 6 months.

(Just waiting for date for her next, totally different op now which will also see her laid up for around 3 months.)

P Cobb | 580 comments Breezy here today c/o Storm Eleanor.

Grach - had the latest Illustrated HP book for Crimbo to keep the set going. What a lovely treasure it be, and what a fantastic commission Jim Kaye has received to do all 7 books. I think it will be a superb collection to have. No doubt they will follow on with Fantastic Beasts afterwards.

However, the publishers or whoever are still continuing to cream HP enthusiasts year upon year. Our local supermarkets had Xmas HP books available namely HP wands collection (books sealed so couldn't see inside but basically photo illusts of all the wands from the films (many available in the Noble Collection and at Leavesden Studios) and then another book out about the HP world which has extensively reused the Jim Kaye illustrations from the first 2 books.

Forgot to say that Jumanji has Dr Who's Karen Gillan in it. Take a 'look-see' if you get the chance.
