Makes 12
350g self-raising flour, sifted
50g butter, softened
50g lard, softened
100-115ml milk
Optional: a pinch of sugar
I wondered it you had this one Suzy. It sounds about right to me. I've never understood why so many scone recipes contain sugar.
Well, the snow never put in an appearance here, just plenty of rain. It does seem to be easing a bit with the coming daylight :)

(*consults The National Trust Book of Scones: 50 Delicious Recipes and Some Curious Crumbs of History*) ... Yep! - the first Recipe in the Book on Page 13 is for Plain Scones ;o>
The Sugar? - well, they aren't sweet otherwise and some folk prefer to eat them as they are or just with a little Butter on so they add Sugar to give the Scones a touch of sweetness to them. It adds an extra touch of flavour too - plus I think a lot of folk are far more accustomed to the things that they eat generally being a lot sweeter these days.
American Scones are quite different to our UK ones because they always contain a high Sugar content and turn out very solid and dense in texture in comparison to our much lighter and fluffier ones. They seem to prefer them to be like a kind of chewy Biscuit?
I do sometimes put a very tiny pinch of Sugar and a very tiny pinch of Salt in mine - but that's more down to being just the way that I saw my Nan make hers and I think that it helps them to last a little bit longer as well ;o>

A huge blank whiteout of a Sky today or, more accurately, an off-whiteout with tiny tinges of grey. It rained heavily all night long and so the Back Garden is flooded in several places this Morning - as we are on many feet of solid Clay just under the surface here and so any excessive Rain can takes days to absorb and drain away.

I'd better go block her in and bribe her with some Cabbage until my Neighbour can come round with his Wheelbarrow to take her back Home.

Next door have got some problem with their gas pipe which now needs replacing so there’s been loud drilling for 3 hours. They might have to do mine as well :-(

Then there was an almightly rumbling of Thunder and the Sky lit up with Lightening!!! - and both Mitz and T****t scuttled off together!!! ... I've just found them both cuddled up together in Mitz's Den under the Sofa!!! - LOL!!! ;o>
And within fifteen minutes, the Back Garden has gone from being sunlit to several cms deep in huge Hailstones that covered it just like Snow to now being extremely wet and sunlit again once again - almost like I dreamt the whole thing happening?!! ;oO

Awww, Lez Lee? - I hope not! ;o<

Stand by to repel borders!

"Verily, for the Lord shall app them who app themselves."
The weather here has just got better and better as the day has gone on - grey skies gave way to blue, the sun is shining and it's not too blowy.
So, grab the steaks from Martin (oh, go on, grab Martin too), I'll get the barbecue lit and see you all in a bit :)

Irthlingborough is a wonderful place - a 7.5t weight limit except for Tesco trucks which stop at the store halfway down the main road and cause traffic chaos for half an hour or so before driving off without a care in the world.
I love that delivery :)

Ain't so warm out there now - the wind is back, making it bitterly cold. Oh well, here we go again :)

Mitz is still needing (demanding!) attention during the night but it seems to be far more to do with separation anxiety than about her feeling or being ill. I've kept her on the Antacids as she still occasionally hunches up and looks a little uncomfortable for a couple of hours every other day or so - and when it does happen it seems to only be just after her Teatime now.
It's another bright, sunny day here, with very little in the way of clouds due to the wind blowing them all away :)
There have been some very strong gusts, rocking the truck quite a bit - certainly keeps you alert.
Dinner is in the oven - had a go at a meatloaf picnic pie that I came across on the Tesco recipes and was ably assisted by Mrs Grizzly (she's great at stirring), which will be accompanied with beans and potatoes.

That's the one - I'd know it anywhere :)
It has, of course, had a few tweaks, mainly because of what I had (or didn't have) in the cupboard. Any mince we buy is of the lowest fat content we can get, something we've been doing for years now. Garlic cloves were substituted with garlic puree, mixed herbs in place of the oregano and stuffing mix used as I haven't got any breadcrumbs (and this is what I usually use for making meatloaf anyway). I also crumbled an OXO cube into the fried onions before they were added to the mince. No sesame seeds to sprinkle over the top either.
I only used half of the meatloaf mix as I couldn't get any more onto the sheet of pastry and still be able to fold the pastry over the top, so the rest of the mix is now in the freezer to be used another day.
It was, if I do say myself, very nice while it was warm and I'll find out later if it tastes as good cold when I put a slice or two in my pack-up :)

Pass your plate over then :)
I might make some individual ones with the remaining mix when I buy some more pastry - should get four out of one sheet.

It was definitely better hot than cold - the pastry had gone all soft.
How did your appointment go today, suzy?

P.S. Hope yesterday was not too traumatic and that that's it for a good while now.

They could just agree to accept the inevitable and sign me off now - after all I am only ever going to be deteriorating by degrees and there is no Treatment and no Cure ... but I guess that I'm helping to keep lots of other folk in work by keeping on with putting me through this again and again? - LOL!!!
Now I get to wait to see if I get to keep my current ESA Benefit and, if so, how long for - before they send me yet another 40 page Form to be painstakingly filled in before being asked to attend yet another Assessment.
Ahhh well, such is life, hey? ... and "there you are, and there you be, so now you know, and so it goes" ... as my darling Nan always used to say ;o>

I hope that you got sent both varieties as was ordered. I prefer the Light one myself as it has more Veg content in it and it tastes tangier and far more delicious to me - but I ordered one of the original as well as that's probably more likely to be the one that you will have enjoyed so much in the past.
I hope you find you still enjoy it and that it brings back lots of happy memories - but, if not, then you can always palm it off on your Children or on your Grandchildren instead! - LOL!!! ;o>

And, yes, I do know that it's quarter to 3 in the Afternoon but I've had one Hell of a night and a very rough start to the Morning and so I'm only just getting with it and getting ready to face up to my Breakfast now - LOL!!! ;o>
I'd tell you all about it? - but, believe me, you really don't want to know! ;oO
Anyways, the Sky is grubby grey here and we have got Forecast warnings ahead of heavy Rain and Snow on it's way - but! - there is still the odd ray of quite brilliant sunshine managing to find it's way through and, although it is starting to verge on becoming gale-force Winds, it isn't all that cold out.
I've been made very agitated and upset and have unfortunately had several extremely scary Panic Attacks as a result - but I'm sat out on the Patio now, just focussing on breathing in and out, and starting to come around and to re-find some much-needed calm and quiet within myself once more.
And now I'm just about ready to restart the day off all over again ;o>
So? - what's for Breakfast? - LOL!!!

Eggcellent News! ... Cadbury Crème Eggs are currently included in a deal where you can get 10 of them for £2 at Tesco (online or in stores) ... although you may have to scramble as it's only temporary – until Tuesday the 19th of March and is only while Stock lasts.
Simply buy two multi-packs of five Eggs in each for £2 (normal price usually around £1.65 a pack) and it makes each Egg effectively just 20p, which is a cracking deal as individual Eggs are usually about 50p each - and now there is no need to shell out that much!
You can even mix and match too - with Oreo, and Caramel, as well as Crème Eggs.

Throw in staff discount and it comes down to £1.80 - shame I don't like Creme Eggs :)

How did they manage to open the door?

My fault, I left it open the last time I checked on them :)

Just tonight to go, then I've got another week off :)
That's it then, all my holidays used up until the new entitlement starts in April.
Been at Tesco now for just over a year and it's not going too bad - 100% timekeeping, a couple of weeks off with my blood pressure, no accidents and only £20,000 worth of food ruined :)
