Craig White | 6727 comments anyone want to buy a rice potatoer?

message 3655: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Things I’ve never used are 3 sides of my 4-sided cheese grater, the grill part of my microwave and my mandoline, mainly because it terrifies me!

message 3656: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22165 comments I think I'm there with you Lez. I have a cheese parer that does a great job and takes up little room in the drawer. I've never known what one side of the grater was for - the one with pursed-up, outward facing notches. We used to have a three-in-one microwave - microwave, conventional oven and grill. When it packed up we just got a basic microwave. Not a fan of a mandolin. I find it just as quick and easy to chop/slice/dice with a knife. If I have a large quantity of veg to do, I pull out the big food processor and put the adjustable slicing (or grater) head in it. I also never use the Slap Chop that someone bought. Hurts my hand.

Lez | 7490 comments I think those notches are for lemon zest.

WOO-HOO! - I know this one! ... I worked alongside an Italian Chef for a year and he used the outward-facing little spikes for grating hard dry Cheeses, such as Parmesan, to get it looking like soft powdered Sand ;o>

Val H. | 22165 comments Apologies if I've posted this before (I probably have). This talk of kitchen appliances brought it back to me. My Mum was once talked into buying a Veg-E-Matic. This would have been in the 1960s. After a few uses, it gathered dust under the kitchen sink but my Dad wouldn't let it rest. He teased the life out of my poor mother for years.

This song by Steve Goodman brings it back:

Fell asleep last night with the TV on
Oh, what a dream I had
I dreamed I went and answered every single one
Of those late night mail order ads
And four to six weeks later, much to my surprise
The mailman came to my front door
And I couldn't believe my eyes
When he brought the Vegematic
And the Pocket Fisherman too
Illuminated Illustrated History of Life
Boxcar Willie with a Ginzu knife
A bamboo steamer, and a Garden Weasel too
And a tie-dyed, dayglo souvenir shirt from Six Flags Over Burbank

Well the doorbell rang all morning and all through the afternoon
I shook with fright as it rang all night
To the light of the Master Card moon
There was Parcel Post in the pantry
UPS in the hall
COD to the ceiling, and I just couldn't pay for it all

I got the egg scrambler, with a Seal-a-Meal carrying case
A set of presidential commemorative plates
So I could eat my eggs off the President's face
A Minute Mender, and a needle that'll knit or crochet
And an autographed photograph of Rin Tin Tin
At Six Flags Over Burbank

I remembered I was dreaming, so I gave a mighty cheer
When I awoke, it was no joke, 'cause all that shit was here
So if you fall asleep with the TV on, let me tell you what to do:
Rip the telephone out of the wall unless you want it to happen to you

You get the Vegematic, and the Pocket Fisherman too
Illuminated Illustrated History of Life
And Boxcar Willie with a Ginzu knife
A bamboo steamer, and a smokeless ashtray too

And an all expenses paid weekend for three at Six Flags Over Burbank

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments YAYYY!!! - my copy of The National Trust Book of Scones: 50 Delicious Recipes and Some Curious Crumbs of History has just arrived! ;o>

A small yet weighty Book - it's Pages are made of thick, quality Paper - with the only let-down to it being that it contains barely a handful of hand-drawn illustrations. I already knew this though.

I think that it most definitely is well worth the £3.59 that I paid for it - and a quick skim so far of the Recipes has revealed some interesting Scone variations including Roasted Shallot, Gruyere & Thyme, Beetroot, and Carrot & Coriander, plus Stollen, Christmas Pudding, Mulled, and Singing Hinnies and Wet Nelly Scones.

I don't know when (or even if?) I'll next be up to doing a bit of Baking - but I shall be sure to be giving a good few of these Recipes a go if I can ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments Cold, wet and windy here! ... the Weather though and not Mitz! ;o>

The 'poor little love' had us up at 2.30am, 4.05am and 6.20am and is currently reclining (like Lady Muck!) on 'her' favourite side of the Sofa whilst watching the TV.

I've upped Tia's calorie intake slightly over the last week by feeding her a little extra in her Meals and by now giving her a quarter of a (Smooth) Peanut Butter Sandwich every day as well.

I don't want to make her uncomfortable in any way by attempting to over-feed her - but she is feeling ever-so-slightly more boney all over and to look like she has indeed lost a little of her usual weight. It's not easy to tell looking at her because of her beautiful long fluffy Fur Coat but we are thinking of maybe going to get her weighed this week to see how much she has lost.

She is now entering her 5th month since her Diagnosis - and we were told that only around 5% of Dogs with this particular kind of Cancer ever get to make it to 6 months - and so I don't really want to think too much about why she might be losing weight although I can obviously guess, only too sadly, as to what it might be.

She is still doing so well, having plenty of her wonderfully mad moments, being so incredibly loving and being so loved by us all, and that is all that I want to focus on from day to day ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments OHHH! - I really am cooking with Gas today!!! ;o>

My Mum saw me putting the Cardboard Sleeve from off the Scone Book in the Paperwaste Bin in the Garage this Morning and said ... "I thought that you were serious about having a clear-out and meant it when you said that you weren't buying any more Books?!!"

Quick as a flash I replied ... "Yes, I am, but I'm celebrating World Book Day today"

I've just sat down and logged on and guess what? ... it really IS the UK's World Book Day today!!! ... and I genuinely and honestly had absolutely no idea that it was until just now! ... HA HA HA HA HA!!! ;o>

Weighing in at 6lb 2oz, she has not yet been named.

We think that's it now for Grandchildren, three boys and two girls - both step-daughters have said "Enough - no more!" :)

Typical;

Phoebe spends half of her waking hours with her nose pressed against the glass patio door watching the birds in the garden. What does she do when I let her out while hanging out the laundry?
She was sat on the patio with her nose pressed against the patio door staring into the lounge at the Zebra Finch in its' cage! :)

Any queue becomes disorderly as soon as I join it, so that's my excuse for staying away :)

message 3691: by [deleted user] (new)

I was going to laugh and boast about blue skies and bright sunshine although it is a little blustery, then I checked the weather forecast - we've got a chance of snow tomorrow, apparently!

message 3692: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments Yeah, we are apparently due increasingly bad weather over the next week - starting with a Forecast for Snow and Ice during the night and into the early hours of tomorrow?

The rain has stopped and the thick 'orrible ominous heavy grey Clouds have parted and blown over to reveal bright blue Skies - and there has even been the odd although brief ray of sunshine here and there as well ;o>

Martin O' | 2196 comments In other words traditional British weather - HOORAH!!!

message 3694: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments I don't know about traditional? - as I think it is becoming pretty much impossible to not acknowledge that environmental Climate changes are having quite a significant effect on our Seasons ;o<

I caught part of a Cookery Show on TV this Morning and the Swedish Chef on there was saying just how different the Winters are in Sweden now - and how deeply upsetting it was to a people who positively thrive on embracing and celebrating their wintery way of life.

Almost everyone has been pointing it all out and arguing over it for some years now - and yet all that they have seemed to have done so far is just to contribute to the problem by expelling a lot of hot air?

message 3695: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Not really that surprising Suzy, in a contest between global ecology and global economy politically there can only be one choice for our leaders stampeding into a future where others will pay the price and they will be long gone.

message 3696: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Mar 09, 2019 12:18PM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments I genuinely hate to be a pessimist but I think that it must be too late to stop it now that it has started to reveal itself as it has? Perhaps all we can do is to try our very best to slow it down somehow - maybe give this beautiful Planet of ours just a little more time?

message 3697: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Taking the long view over the geological age of the Earth our current timeline is a minor blip and though mankind may come and go in a few hundred thousand years I have no doubt the world will keep turning. We, as a species, will soon follow the millions of others into oblivion and slowly the planet will recover and replenish what we have destroyed thankfully and a new age will dawn. Let us hope that if future civilizations evolve they will have a more responsible regard for the world they inhabit.

message 3698: by [deleted user] (new)

On a different subject;

I had been enjoying a bit of supper - leftover potato gratin from lunchtime - right up to the point where I stuck my fork into half a cherry tomato which resulted in a stream of tomato juice squirting straight into my eye!
Fortunately it had been out of the oven for about ten minutes when this happened, or I'd probably be in casualty now explaining how I managed to burn my eye!
