suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I came across a rather good joke today ;o> ...

A couple were both aged 95 years old and had been married for 77 years.

Though they were far from rich still, they managed to get by, because the Wife always very carefully counted out and watched their Pennies as well as their Pounds. And although not young, they were still both in extremely good health, largely due to the Wife's very strict insistence on them only ever eating healthy Foods and participating in tough daily Exercise routines.

One day however, their long life of good health unfortunately didn't help to save them - when they finally went off on their first-ever Vacation, and, before they sadly even got there, their Plane crashed sending them straight off to Heaven.

Once they reached the Pearly Gates, St. Peter escorted them inside and took them to a beautiful Mansion furnished in pure Gold and fine Silks - with a fully-stocked Kitchen and a beautiful natural Waterfall instead of a Shower in the Master Bathroom. And there was also a Maid, who was hanging up all of their favourite Clothes in the Closet, and they both gasped in utter astonishment when she said, 'Welcome to Heaven - this will be your Home now'

The old Man asked St. Peter how much all this was going to cost? ... 'Why, nothing,' St. Peter replied, 'this is your reward in Heaven.' The old Man looked out of the Window and, right there, he saw a championship Golf Course that was finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth ... 'Okay, what are The Green fees?' grumbled the old Man. 'This is heaven,' St. Peter replied. 'You can play for free every day.'

Next they went into the Clubhouse and saw the lavish Buffet Lunch with every imaginable cuisine all laid out before them - from Seafood to Steaks to exotic Desserts - and all accompanied too by free-flowing Beverages. 'No, don't even ask,' said St. Peter to the old Man, 'this is Heaven and so it is all completely free for you to enjoy.'

The old Man looked around and then glanced nervously at his Wife ... 'But where are all of the Low Fat, Low Cholesterol, Sugar-free, High Fibre Foods and Decaffeinated Tea?' he asked. 'Ohhh, that's the best part,' St. Peter replied, 'You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like and you will never get fat or ever get sick. This is Heaven!'

The old Man pushed, 'What? - no Gym to work out at every day?' ... 'Not unless you want to,' was the answer. 'No testing of my Blood Sugar Levels or Blood Pressure or ...' ... 'No, never again. All you have to do here is simply relax and enjoy yourself.'

The old Man furiously glared at his beloved and devoted Wife and screamed, 'You and your $!%?x&@ Bran Flakes!!! - but for you we could have been here years ago!!!'

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Is there ever really any way possible to ever-so-gently unfriend someone on these kinds of Forums?

I sort-of feel unsettled and rather unsure about it - but I've just got myself brave and in practical mode and unfriended 3 of my previous Friends on my Goodreads Friends List.

You see the thing is that two of them have subsequently gone on to completely vanish without any further trace of activity on here for well over a year now - and so it feels strange and silly to continue to 'keep' them on as being Friends, but just in their name only, on my Friends List on my Account & Profile Page?

And the other has chosen, for her own personal and private reasons that she has never shared with me, to not to come over and join in on this particular Group Forum despite me setting up this very Thread mainly just for her to be able to do so - but she currently keeps on showing up on my Friends Updates Page as posting elsewhere on two other Goodreads Group Forums.

And it just feels wrong to me to be able to get to see all of her Posts to other folk elsewhere when I haven't heard directly from her now in well over a year too - and it seems that unfriending someone seems to be the only way to also unfollow someone who is still posting on the Goodreads Website?

I hope that I won't have caused any kind of upset or offence to any of the three Girls though - it just feels like it is the right and also the far more respectful thing to do under the circumstances.

After all, they might possibly also be getting constant Friends Updates of all of my Posts on here as well - and, if we aren't actually even posting to each other anymore, then that surely won't be something that they will be wanting to keep on seeing?

I find Cyber-Etiquette on Public Forums can sometimes be quite confusing to work out?!! ;oO

I'd better get the car defrosted before going to work - temperatures are expected to dip to -3 here.

lol! i know another one in the a similar context..but a somewhat different angle:

Four politicians die in a car accident and they find themselves standing in front of St Peter who says he will give them the tour of heaven and hell and they can decide where they want to stay for all eternity...

Heaven is all people with halo's playing harps on clouds, singing, praying and generally praising God.
Then, a demon appears and takes them down to have a look at hell. In hell, they meet all their old friends playing golf. They play a round, walk up to the 19th for champagne, drink fine wines, then a great meal followed by port and cigars and finally end up in a high class brothel with gorgeous hookers, getting down and dirty doing the kinky things politicians love to do.

The next day, they are asked to decide and unanimously, they all decided hell was the better option.
They take the elevator down to hell. The doors open and a blast from the fiery inferno hits them, the screaming and wailing as demons torture and torment the damned.

"It wasn't like this yesterday!" cried one of the politicians.
"Ah yes..." said the demon smiling. "Yesterday we were canvassing for your support, today you voted!

It was actually quite nice so you could say it's a case of "not bad korma" :)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments theDuke wrote: "I assume these people haven't spoken to you in some time Suzy? If so..then what do you think the message is there, then? Just delete them missy!"

Because these particular folk were kind and friendly enough to want to Friend me - and I've rather a long and happy history of posting with them on the Amazon Forums previously and I'm still very fond of them now, that's why ;o>

However, I'm not the kind of person who feels any need to be a compulsive or obsessive collector of Friends on Goodreads like I've noticed that some rather strange folk appear to be intent on doing - I keep on getting regular Requests from total strangers who appear to have hundreds of Friends already and I have no idea at all as to why they want to Friend me as well.

And it feels rather weird to me to want to 'keep' staying Friends with folk whose Profile Pages show that they haven't been back online in well over a year now or with folk who apparently only ever choose to share all of their Posts with other folk and on other Group Forums instead.

I'm only ruminating, Duke ... just thinking out loud and feeling a bit curious as to what other folk on here think about what might be seen to be good Etiquette about having and not having 'Friends' on Goodreads ;o>

message 3024: by [deleted user] (new)

Just out of curiosity, suzy, did you send a message to each of these friends to say that you hadn't heard from them for a while and as such were considering unfriending them?

I only ask as, having been unfriended by someone on Goodreads, they had not made their intentions known and I did not receive any notification of this happening. It was only when I went into my profile to update on a new book that I was reading that I noticed I had lost that friend.

message 3025: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Jan 19, 2019 06:45AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments No, to be honest, I never thought of doing that?

Two of them have not been back on Goodreads since the beginning of last year according to the activity recorded on their Profile Pages - and the other only ever occasionally contributes to another Group Forum, and now and then talks far more privately and much more personally with someone on their Book Reviews, so I don't think that she will ever come over and Post on here now.

It is all rather odd because this Snail Thread was one of her regular and favourite Threads on the Amazon Forums and so I set this Thread up on here for her to come over and continue to Post on it. She said she was delighted and immediately befriended me - but that was literally all the contact that I had with her on here and she has never once chosen to use this Thread either?! - LOL!!! ;o>

I know this because I keep getting Update Notifications of all of her Posts and it just doesn't feel right to me to be receiving them - as it feels like I am continually listening in on an ongoing private conversation. She befriended me back in October 2017 and must also be getting daily Notifications of all of my Posts as well but she has never chosen to come over to chat or to catch up - so there seems to be very little point in us being on each other's Friends List on here.

message 3026: by [deleted user] (new)

I must have my notifications set differently, then, as I only receive emails if my friends have added/reviewed a book or sent me a personal message. I don't get notified of every post my friends make.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's all on a 'Recent Updates' Page that comes up whenever I sign in, Grizzly. It collates and keeps you updated on all of your Friends activities on here as well! - their Book Lists, any Ratings and Reviews they have put up and also any Posts that they have put up elsewhere.

I almost certainly disabled everything on purpose! The last thing I want is being bombarded by notifications of people’s every move, I try to remember to untick ‘Add to my update feed’ when I post.

message 3033: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I'm not sure I can disable it, Lez Lee? - it seems to be an integral part of why people Friend each other on here which is so that they can follow and keep themselves connected to each other in this way.

I like to use the Goodreads Inbox System to make any contact with Friends on here and so that's the reason why I decided to start making Friends of my friends - LOL!!!

And it is why I won't ever accept Requests from total strangers who keep trying to befriend me as I really don't see any point in doing so, do you? I've had 3 Requests today already and yet I have absolutely no idea as to who the people behind the Profiles are or why they are making such Requests of me?

Is there a Prize to be had for the most Friends made on here, I wonder?!! ;o>

Well, I've learned something new today - never knew you could do that :)

I never completely close down Goodreads, or a few other things on my laptop - they are just left as open tabs so when I switch on my laptop I don't need to log in to these sites, just hit refresh.

message 3041: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Jan 20, 2019 04:48AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I suppose I could do that too - but I've always chosen to have my Laptop set up to delete my Browsing Session everytime that I put my Laptop on 'Hibernate'. I like to Log In from scratch every day as I only ever use just a small handful sites regularly - and I use to travel every few weeks up to stay at my friend's Flat and felt it to be a much safer and more secure way of continuing to use my Laptop while using it connected up to someone else's WIFI.

And, well, I guess I can be far more open and honest (with myself as well as with others) now that the friendship has broken down and ended - and admit that, because of his ongoing compulsive addiction to gambling and serious debt problems, I had to sadly stop with continuing to place all of my previous trust in him to be around my Laptop whenever I was off out of the Flat ... in case he ever felt tempted to try to use it in my absence ;o<

It's not nice when you can't trust someone :(

A former friend of mine, 30 years ago, went into the bank and convinced the teller that he was me and withdrew a reasonable sum of money.
Obviously I reported it to the Police and the bank eventually reimbursed me. Had I ever caught up with him, I would have ripped him limb from limb. I've never since been so furious as I was when that happened.

Ohhh, that's absolutely terrible, Grizzly! ... ;oO ... ;o<

I can only really blame myself for being so trusting and so gullible and loving. It's taken me a year since then - but I do feel now like I'm finally starting to forgive myself for trying to stay friends for so long with someone who repeatedly used me and hurt me so much.

Isabella | 1370 comments Clearly, this isn't on anywhere near the same scale but many years ago, I hung a pair of plastic pots with some campanulas my Dad had given me, outside our first little house, just to brighten things up. A day later, they'd disappeared, gone forever. As far as value went, they wouldn't have done well in a jumble sale.

I still feel slightly sick, forty years later, after many worse experiences in life, when I remember. It's the cynical betrayal of trust and we're not to blame, they are, for behaving so badly.

That happened to my sister too. She had a large hanging basket outside her front door, with one of those attachments for lowering it for watering. She’d not had it long when overnight, some rotten sod nicked the whole thing. It’s a normal, decent neighbourhood not known for criminality but no-one had any idea who might have done it.
