And a large tea, please :)

Bucket, please.

Better make it coffee rather than tea - with eight hours in the classroom today starting at 04:00, I'm going to need something to keep me awake!
Yet more periodic training towards the drivers CPC qualification that won't count as I'm already covered until 2024 and can't start accumulating the next 35 hours until after September 2019.
Company policy though, you must participate as part of the ongoing training, even though it doesn't count towards the official qualification.

P Cobb | 580 comments Watched the Peter Jackson colourized film "They Shall Not Grow Old" last night - wow, a superb watch if anybody has yet to see it. Thousands of extra film frames inserted to slow the film down to correct speed, colourized and sound added. It belies the fact it is over 100 years old. However, it's the soundtrack that truly makes it. Amazing feat.

And misquoted as it always is!
It should be ‘They shall grow not old’

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Just a thought, Lez Lee, but perhaps Peter Jackson couldn't manage to get approval and permission from Representatives of the Estate of Laurence Binyon?

message 2415: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Nov 13, 2018 04:13AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments It does sound fascinating, P, but I don't think that I could cope with anything that will only pluck further at my heart-strings and make me cry even more than I keep on doing right now ... as it already is I'm thinking of drawing up Blueprints to build an Ark in the Back Garden! - LOL!!! ;o>

And, to make matters even worse, not even the most ardent and loyal supporter of 'Flappy' could possibly continue to deny that the poor little soul wasn't clearly dying last night. I bobbed in before Bed for one last look and immediately wished to God that I hadn't ;o<

Sometimes I really do wonder at how I ever became a Palliative Care Nurse?! - but I could always harness my over excessive sensitivity back then to be such an incredibly valuable tool and an essential part of me giving the very best of nursing care.

These days though I feel like I need as many 'blinkers' and 'shields' as I can possibly muster to keep so many things from distressing and depressing me beyond all my endurance. Perhaps suddenly becoming disabled hasn't helped much either? - as it does seem to add an extra and often also rather disturbing fragility and vulnerability to the Emotions as well?

Kleenex is most certainly making an absolute fortune out of me right now - LOL!!! ;o>

message 2416: by Isabella (new)

Isabella | 1374 comments Perhaps the trouble is, Suzy, that as a nurse, you knew that your actions could really help your patients and their dear ones. Now, like most of us, you're constantly bombarded with situations that pull at your emotions without the power to do anything about them. The news, documentaries and charity appeals are full of scenes of suffering but we can only give what we can to help.
My daughter and I both feel the same distress about so much that we see but there's only so much within our power...

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Yes I agree, Isabella ... x

I try to live positively and in the moment because the World is such a beautiful place and I am genuinely so grateful and feel so blessed to have got to have a life to live in it.

I just have to keep on with doing whatever I can in my own very small way - and I hope that, in doing so, I help to make it a far kinder and much happier place for everyone ;o>

The tears keep on flowing so the Blueprints for the Ark are still under consideration - LOL!!! ... and I might also start thinking about buying myself some Shares in Kleenex ;o>

Well, I have tried?! - but I still can't shift the first image that came to my Mind of you as an overgrown Schoolboy sat crouched on a tiny wooden Chair behind a tiny wooden Desk ... that has the remains of a Tuppenny bag of Gobstoppers in it and a rather large and nicely filled Pea Shooter ... ! ... ;o>

message 2419: by [deleted user] (new)

Now add in another thirteen classmates and put a very sweary teacher at the front of the class to complete the picture :)

At the end of the course we swapped instructors and had a further hour of Health and Safety updates - they kept that one quiet until after lunch break, when all the pea shooters had been put away :)

Isabella | 1374 comments Sympathies, Grizzly. My DH recently was ordered to take a course in how to supervise and mentor his graduate students. He's semi-retired, after over 40 years in the job and he's never had a failure or even a single referral among all his students. 'It's university policy,' - at least since last year.
He wasn't impressed - grandmother and eggs comes to mind.

Reminds me of the course for the library FPE (First Professional Exam) which was 3 hours every Friday afternoon. The last hour was spent studying a Shakespeare play - not part of the exam. As we needed ‘O’ level Eng. Lit. to work in libraries to begin with, it was a complete waste of time . It was even dafter for my year as the play was Henry V which we’d already done at school. After a peaceful protest we got tacit agreement from the lecturer to bugger off home.

On the 'grandmother and eggs' theme, one last mention of our training course - we spent some time being instructed on how to drive our new trucks which, with all the latest safety features and other innovations practically drive themselves :)

As for time to go home - as soon as we were given the nod, I was straight out the door and in my car before everyone else had even reached Security to check out!

It's warmed up quite nicely here over the past couple of days and looks set to continue until at least the weekend. Definitely warm enough again for me to be back in shorts :)

Hope everyone else is enjoying similar weather :)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I was just (well, about an hour ago) sat outside Prêt à Manger at Euston Station to enjoy a leisurely cup of tea. With my jacket off. In mid-November.

The sun is now streaming through the train windows. Surprisingly, the train is moving at something resembling the speed of a speeding train and the toilet door has been fixed since my journey down to London on the same train this morning.

message 2426: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments They may have fixed the Toilet Door - but does the Toilet still work? ;o>

message 2427: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments The toilet works. I just wish it would stop talking. (Anyone who has been on a Virgin train will know what I mean.)

message 2429: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Well, that was all too good to last. Now missed connecting train at Birmingham International (cancelled) and Birmingham New Street (first train stuck outside the station for 15 min) and only just managed to catch the next one at Wolverhampton (moved to different platform, allowing 2 minutes to push through crowds and get over the bridge). Suddenly, talking toilets don't seem so bad.

Serves me right for being a hobo, I guess.

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments It's a shame you can't collect Loyalty Points for Train Miles, Gordon ;o<

You could at least get to use them to enjoy free Drinks and Snacks and maybe the occasional upgrade to First Class as well ;o>

message 2431: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments You don't get home any quicker in first class. And you have to share a carriage with the kind of people who travel first class. I think I'll give that a miss.

message 2432: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments You get to share a Table and a Reading Lamp though, Gordon?

I can't really get my Head around wanting to pay out an extra £10+ for those 'bonuses'? And I can't say that I've ever found the Carriages to be any cleaner or any plusher or the Seats to be all that much comfier either on the few times that I have sat in First Class at the Guard's very kind invitation? ;o>

message 2433: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Something I have noticed that is becoming more common these days is the "feedback" from various companies as to how satisfied you have been with their service. If they are doing their job properly I don't see why they feel the need to be praised, surely that is part of what used to be known as customer service and if they aren't then one can always try complaining (ha-ha!), as this is usually stonewalled by some dogs body armed with a litany of feeble excuses etc it is hardly worth the price and time of a phonecall unless in truly exceptional circumstances.
Recent conversation with a representative of Nintendo whilst trying to book a repair for my daughter's switch console which apparently can only be achieved by various emails and printing labels to send the item by post. After explaining that I did not have access to email or printer I suggested that they post the appropriate labels direct.
"Sorry we no longer have the means to fecilitate that. We used to but have discontinued that option." Presumably times are hard for Nintendo and they can no longer afford the price of an envelope and stamp! Anyway my daughter was able to access a suitable email address and printer so hopefully the matter will be resolved in a day or two.

Val H. | 22284 comments Speaking of train travel, I was coming home on Saturday (late afternoon) on a suburban train line. A good-looking family of three (mum, dad and daughter) got on and Mum plumped down beside me with a sigh. I commented that that was the sound of relief and she told me she was exhausted after spending four days at Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival - Derby Day the previous Saturday, the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November, Oaks Day on the Thursday and Family Day that Saturday. They were all dressed in the height of fashion (who knew Carmen Miranda was back??) and were obviously the kind of folk who would only use public transport once a year. 50-something dad was wearing narrow-legged poopy pants and shoes without socks (and this is fashion??) but the overheard nugget (from Mum) I need to pass on is this:

"....... Of course, she made the cardinal error of wearing a felt hat in the Spring!"

I feel any women reading this should stay alert to this dire possibility. I have brushed all my felt hats and put them away in their hat boxes until the autumn at least!

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments WHAT?!! ... well, I hope no-one tells Father Christmas this!!! ;oO

message 2436: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments My mum might well have concurred with that! She had hats for every season including a felt one with a brightly coloured feather. She got really vexed when sis and I fell about laughing.

message 2437: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments Somewhere in our garage is a dress-ups box and in it is a red felt hat that could have been worn by the Queen Mum. Definitely her style. When my older daughter was four she would insist on wearing it every day when we went to pick up her brother from school. As it was coupled with her dress tucked inside a pair of Fluffies, she made quite a sight.

message 2438: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Nov 16, 2018 01:57AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Awww bless her!!! ;o>

I vaguely remember my Blue full-length Princess Dress years - two of them before I couldn't help but grow out of it ... and then, being as it was the 70's, there was the Blue Dungarees with the Red/White/Black Stripy Poncho years with my very long Hair all curled up every night in Rags so I had a bright red Head of crazy Ringlets just like Bonnie Langford! ;o>

Almost every Photo I have of my Brother is of him in a Mustard Yellow Polo Neck and Denim Shorts which my Mum had to search out identical replacements of with every growth spurt.

His best friend, Robert, was such a tiny string-thin weakling of a Lad who spent his entire childhood through to his teenage years continually wearing Bright Red Wellies ... even in Summer ... AND also when playing in the Paddling pool in our Back Garden.

Everything else except for his Pants and his Wellies would come off! - and his Mum always used to joke that he would probably get married and even go on to collect his Pension STILL wearing them! - LOL!!! ;o>

message 2439: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments My memories of wellies are they were always to big, my feet would slide about in them, the top part would slap against my legs and chafe the skin until it was red raw. I didn't mind as long as there were puddles to splash in or snow and slush to stomp in, somehow my feet always ended up wet, much to my mother's consternation!

message 2440: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments We kept our wellies in the pantry under the stairs, next to the back door. One day I put my foot in and encountered a large frog. Luckily it jumped out unharmed.

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments That's exactly what I thought! ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments No Fog here - but the Sky is a complete whiteout and it's a very dull day.

I woke up at half four to the sound of Tia chasing Mitz round and round the Dining Room Table - and when I went downstairs and turned the Light on they both dived in Bed and actually tried to pretend to be asleep!!! ... they get more puppyish every day!!! ;o>

It was just SO good to see and hear that Mum and me sat on the Stairs crying with laughter and then we all had Toast and Tea together before going back to Bed again ;o>

message 2444: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Such a beautiful clear bright and sunny day here! ;o>

I wish it was me that had won the Euromillions Lottery. I'd buy a big comfortable Car and hire myself a Chauffeur to drive me out into the Countryside so I could have a little toddle and get to kick up some Autumn Leaves followed by an early Tea in a olde-worlde Country Pub somewhere ... (*sigh*)

Ahhh well, Cinderella! - maybe one day your Ship will come in?! - but in the meantime there is still some hoovering and another load of Laundry to be done.

message 2445: by [deleted user] (new)

Colder days are coming!

We had our first frost overnight though it has now warmed up sufficiently to defrost the cars. Although it is bright outside, it's not warm enough for laundry to go out, so into the tumble dryer it goes.

Decided not to bother with a full roast today, instead we'll be having bacon, sausage, egg and mushroom butties :)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Yes, distinctly chilly this morning, especially in the shade, but at the moment very bright and sunny with clear blue skies, winter is definitely on the way. Mrs O' is making stew and dumplings today!🍜

message 2447: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Well, we have yet another clear bright and sunny day here today and it's just warm enough to get to sit outside too ... so long as I wear a Dressing Gown over my PJs ;o>

Our usual Squirrel (recognisable by the bush of his Tail) is sat on the edge of a large Stone Planter digging up the Plant that Mum put in it yesterday! Three Magpies are noisily playing tag from Tree to Tree across the Garden and I can just make out the old Fox, that lives next-door, warming and sunning itself on their Compost Heap next to his Den.

Mitzi is lying on her Back kicking her Legs in the air in her Box on the Patio making joyful woofs and snorts - while Tia sits happy, proud, and triumphant on top of her and woofs and snorts back!

I still can't get my Head around the awful fact that Tia really is terminally ill?! - but I'm working hard at focussing on just living in the moment with her and continuing to thank God for all of these delightfully daft and wonderful days. I try my best not to think of tomorrow, but still, if we do manage to make it to Christmas with her like this then it really will be the very best Christmas gift ever for us all.

Only just Fried Egg Butties here ... with Tomato Ketchup, of course ... Grizzly? - can I possibly 'borrow' just a bit of Bacon, half a Sausage, and a small spoonful of Mushrooms please? ;o>

message 2448: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments By the way? - I wanted to 'up' on Tia's cosiness and comfort as Autumn turns to Winter and so I decided to take a punt on buying one of these Furrybaby Fluffy Fleeces ;o>...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079BKMNN...

... and I'm thrilled to report that the little hairy woofers, M&D, and me are SO delighted with it that, almost as soon as it arrived, I was straight back online buying another one so that both of our two can enjoying the luxury of snuggling down in one each.

I bought the Beige in Large (100cm x 120cm) and it turned out to be a lovely very pale caramel/warm cream colour that looks fab on our slightly paler cream-coloured Leather Sofa. I always launder all new fabric items before use and so I can confirm that it also washes and dries beautifully as well ;o>
