Craig White | 6727 comments anyhoo,
by the time mrs tech had left her car yesterday, but before she reached the house, she had acquired a very thirsty staffie with no collar - initially thought it was a dog from down the road which frequently escapes, but after we'd watered her and leashed her, i took her there to find we'd been mistaken. obviously distressed and still thirsty (the dog too!) we bunged her in the car and took her to the nearest vet, where she was scanned and found to be a 'patient' of that practice - couldn't stay for the owner to collect as we'd left the brickie, who was finished and trying to go home, in charge of our unlocked front door and the rapidly heating up oven! too much fun!

Helen The Melon | 3422 comments TMI warning.......it's so hot it's "no bra" weather. ;-)
Was too hot to be outside for long yesterday. Val's probably thinking that it's nothing compared to where she is, but we're just not acclimatised to it.

Craig White | 6727 comments i'm bra-less too today! kept the leather g-string on tho'!

roughcasters and brickie continue to melt into puddles. job further extended as when back wall (the last one) was stripped it was discovered that 2 of the 4 lintles above windows/doors were ****ed and require to be replaced - could have asked them just to repair, but that just masks the issue! still, peace of mind has cost another £700 i wasn't expecting! guys are doing a grade A job right enough, especially in this weather.

No, where I am is bleedin' freezing! 8 degrees overnight and a top tomorrow of 13 and possible showers. I am glad of the rain though, it's been a very dry summer and autumn. All the dozens of bluebell bulbs I planted (the coarse Spanish ones, not the lovely English ones) are all up and looking pleased with themselves. Problem with weather is, we're never happy with it, are we? Enjoy your summer though, it sounds like a good one. I just hope it continues into autumn. My son and d-i-l are making their first ever trip to the UK in September - a delayed honeymoon for 4/5 weeks.

I meant compared to your summer weather, Val!! Your winter sounds lovely and mild. What would we talk about if the weather was just the same all the time? 😀

Martin O' | 2196 comments Next week's forecast is more of the same folks, kilts with built in fans are going to be all the rage I hear. Val, September is usually not to bad temperature wise but can be a bit wet and of course the nights are drawing in once again. You do get the bonus of the trees changing to autumn colours which is quite spectacular if you live near a wooded/forested area. My favourite time of year in a lot of ways. Which parts of Britain are they heading for?

From London to Oxford, then down to Devon & Cornwall; up to Bath, then Manchester (visiting family), the Lake District, over to the Scottish Borders, up to Loch Lomond then down to Edinburgh. From there they fly to Dublin and then home. It'll only be a snapshot of beautiful Britain but hopefully they have fun and get to see some places they'd like to return to with more time.

I watched it last night, and the tribulations of the Barlows completely made me miss the snow settling on the cobbles. I'll have to look again on Monday. Hope Ken doesn't slip on them, reckon he'll never get up again.

Craig White | 6727 comments :) so happy70birthday n.h.s.!

mrs tech is a health professional for the above, and is therefore a proud wearer of the 'hello, my name is......' badge. she refused, however to indulge my dare when she first received the badge, to temporarily alter it to read 'hello, my name is....slim shady'!

she really hit the jackpot when she married me!

message 1227: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Jul 05, 2018 02:39AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Yeah! - HAPPY BIRTHDAY N.H.S. !!! ;o>

Is it really only 70 years old?!! Of course it has it's faults and it's flaws as does everything else - but nevertheless there are so many millions of us now that will always be eternally in it's debt and so incredibly grateful for all that it does and everything that it stands for.

Whenever I hear any miserable folk sat around in Clinics, loudly moaning away and whinging on about it, I do wonder if they have any kind of gratitude at all in them - or any real understanding either as to just what our Health as a Nation and what our Country would be like to ever live in without it?

I simply can't bear to imagine how unbearably challenging, horrendously expensive, and horrifically painful the majority of us would find our day-to-day lives without being able to access so much utterly excellent and free care. To have to endure and to try to get by and survive somehow on only ever being able to access far more basic forms of care and always restricted to it being on such a very limited budget.

There would people in the UK right now dying in their thousands every day from accidents and all of their ongoing complications, conditions like Cancer, in constant pain with persistent Illnesses and Infections, struggling to cope with badly or unset broken Bones, and trying to manage without so many kinds of essential pain-relieving and life-saving Medications.

Yeah, it does very sadly have it's failings and there are obviously quite a few horror stories about some of the care provided (or not provided) and about a handful of the people who have and unfortunately still do work within it - but I certainly wouldn't ever want to have to try to live here in the UK without the NHS.

Mrs tech - we salute you! - thank you ... x x x ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments So tonight, we have some rather lovely-looking Gammon Steaks for a change - and, as it's a little cooler today, I am just wondering as to whether to serve them up with a yummy Cheese, Onion & Potato Bake? ;o>

message 1239: by [deleted user] (new)

That'll do for me - even though we've just had pork chops, chips and beans :)

We are actually still having a cooked meal every day despite how hot it has been.

Hi Lez;

Even with different flavours, don't you get bored of soup every day?
I know I would, and Mrs Grizzly would probably take up cooking again if I was only offering soup :)

message 1242: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Aug 18, 2018 02:28PM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments We still have cooked Meals as well, regardless of the heat, but I do find it much harder to try to summon up the energy or the motivation to do too much and in an increasing hot Kitchen as the day goes on as well.

I tend to prepare stuff very early on in the day while it is a little cooler in the House or to cut a few corners wherever I can by using more Cupboard and Freezer Ingredients to make up far more quick and simple Meals.

I already had a packet of Cheese Sauce Mix in that just needed making up with a little extra Half-fat Extra Mature Cheddar in the Microwave - and later on I'll stir in a spoonful of Wholegrain Mustard, pour it over the already fried-off Onions and part-boiled Potato Slices and throw some extra Half-fat Cheddar on top and just bung it in the Oven for a bit.

Making our Meals up in this way each day I can prep it all in cooler periods and in far more manageable amounts of my own personal time - and we also won't have to have the Fan Oven on for too long tonight ;o>

I keep on with fancying having Bacon at the moment? - maybe it is just because it is SO tasty or maybe it is my Body wanting to have a bit more Salt than it usually gets in my daily diet?

message 1243: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Cheese I can always fancy ... every Meal and every day ... it is definitely an addiction ;o>

message 1244: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I make up a large Pan of Soup once a week or so to use up the last of any Chicken that we always have in the Fridge and any Veggies that we might have in as well before buying fresh in again. We roast an extra large Chicken every week, not just for us, but also to make up lots of Meals for the little hairy woofers too ;o>

If no-one fancies any Soup then I bung it in the Freezer - and I can always defrost it, add a few extras, and make it into a Pasta Bake or a Curry.

message 1245: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments “Even with different flavours, don't you get bored of soup every day?”

No, I love it, it’s filling and low calorie. Even worse, I tend to have the same sort every day - lentil & mushroom. I make a big panful, enough for 4 days. 😀

message 1246: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I get cravings and also the occasional obsession with certain Foods ... I had a rather memorable period between the ages of 13 to 15 and twice again in my late 20's and 30's when I simply had to eat Pickled Beetroot Sandwiches for my Packed Lunch every single day of the week ... which I also remember drove my Mum completely crackers at the time - LOL!!! ;o>

message 1247: by [deleted user] (new)

I get up at 11 P.M. and, by the time I've completed my beauty regime (look in the mirror, give up), made my breakfast (fruit and yoghurt smoothie) and pack-up and had a cup of tea, it's time to head out the door for work so dinner has to wait until I get home. Not only that, if Mrs Grizzly is on earlies, then she will normally be home by the time I've got dinner cooked, so all to the good :)
If she's on lates, I'll put her dinner on as soon as I get up (prepped at the same time as mine, obviously), so she walks in to a cooked meal as I leave for work - could this be why I hear no complaints about my cooking, being as I'm not there?

Got some salmon out of the freezer and in the fridge defrosting for dinner tomorrow - that will be served with salad.

I'm a right glutton for vintage Cheddar, anything else just hasn't got the bite :)

message 1248: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I experimented for a while with using Waitrose Half-fat Cheddar but found it to be hard and far too dry in texture and also a bit too over crumbly too - especially after putting it in the Freezer which is where we usually store our Cheese supplies.

However we are currently absolutely loving Asda's own 50% Less Fat Mature Cheese which has a very rich cheesy taste that hits the spot yet is still quite soft and creamy without having too high a Fat level in it or producing any really unappealing grease puddles on melting ...

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Where's our Granny? ... it's WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY!!! ;o>

"World Chocolate Day, referred to in some instances, as International Chocolate Day, is an annual observance that occurs globally on 7 July. References to World Chocolate Day being observed on 7 July have been recorded as early as 2009. Celebration of the day includes the consumption of chocolate. Some references indicate that this day celebrates the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550.

Many other chocolate day celebrations exist, such as National Chocolate Day in the United States on 28 October. Confusingly, the U.S. National Confectioners Association lists 13 September as International Chocolate Day.

Other more specific chocolate-themed days are celebrated throughout the world, including Bittersweet Chocolate Day on 10 January, Milk Chocolate Day on 28 July, White Chocolate Day on 22 September, and Chocolate Covered Anything Day on 16 December"
