Yep! - me too, Martin ... and the tinned ones are not only not all that nice but they don't last very long once opened, so they are more likely to get wasted, and they are so incredibly expensive as well.

I forgot to mention the Corn ... our Takeaways always have Baby Sweetcorn in it ... and we go for the House Special every time because it contains very generous amounts of Chicken, Beef and Char Sui Pork pieces plus 4 very large Prawns in each one.

We usually buy 2 x Chow Meins, 1 x Chips and 1 x Beansprouts, plus a large Chinese Curry Sauce - and it shares out very nicely indeed between the three of us ;o>

How's that work then, Martin?
First person to decipher whats on the screen wins gold? :)

The way my laptop is going, I'm likely to use it as a discus!
(does a half-spin, and with a cry of "thatsallyourebloodyfitfor!" hurls it across the arena) :)

Martin O' | 2196 comments I usually have the special fried rice with curry sauce, it's a dry dish, though I have been known to plump for the chop suey special now and then or just pancake rolls, they are huge and extremely filling. (I'm sure the calories are just piling on reading all these posts!)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Lamb Shanks tonight - my Mum's favourite ... our Neighbour did a bulk buy on Meat for his Freezer yesterday when he went over to a local Market - and he has just brought a bag round with some very nice choice cuts that he kindly thought to buy for us too while he was there ;o>

message 1108: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm still on the lookout for a good butcher round here - maybe I'm just too picky but we were rather spoiled with a fantastic butchers in Nuneaton called Frank Parkers and compare everything to them. I've looked at a few and bought from a couple, but have not been overly impressed.
At the moment I make do with what I can get on the butchers counter in the supermarket, and managed to get some passable fillet steak today which has been gently warmed in garlic butter with chestnut mushrooms thrown into the same pan, and served with salad.

I've managed to get a picture of Phoebe playing hide and seek today (she's more camera-shy than me) so I've popped that onto my profile, if you fancy a 'butchers' :)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh bless her!!! - did you pretend you had no idea where she was?!! - LOL!!! ;o>

message 1110: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Don't care for shiltake or oyster mushrooms, they always taste a bit slimy to me, chestnut are fine but the portabello is my favourite, the big flat ones dipped in oil, lightly seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic granules then baked in the oven. Along with a good steak, onion rings, pepper sauce, saute potato slices and grilled tomato, real man food!

message 1111: by [deleted user] (new)

She's having an off day - on previous occasions I've (eventually) found her asleep inside a piilowcase on our bed and curled up on the lap of a toy panda bear, making her damn near invisible :)

What you can't see in the picture is the bird cage next to that curtain. When I got back from shopping earlier Phoebe was asleep half under the curtain and the rest of her was covered in seed husks! :)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments We tend just to use the Supermarkets these days as their Meat Sections certainly have improved so much now over the last 10 years.

But we always used to buy from a large local Butchers who had several Shops across Greater Manchester as well as having quite a few Market Stalls in several Indoor Market Food Halls as well.

They have scaled back to just having the one Shop (that is just a bit too far out of our way now) but do still have a large Indoor Market Stall in Wythenshawe only a few miles away from us - and they will also give really great discounts to their most regular Customers who still continue to buy in bulk from them.

The fresh and lean quality is always absolutely superb - and so, when my Neighbour went to collect his bulk order, he bought some extras on a few things that he knew that we would probably also like for our Freezer as well. He also kindly insisted on sharing the large discount on the cost with us too ;o>

Martin O' | 2196 comments I don't know if it's a symptom of my advancing years but I don't seem to find Indian curries as enjoyable as I did. Also I can't find a decent Italian restaurant locally these days which is a real bummer, good quality Italian food is probably my favourite cuisine when eating out.
I did see on the box last week that the restaurant trade is finding things difficult in the current economic climate, the high costs of overheads are cutting into their profit margins and raising prices means less customers during the mid week period.

If I'm going down the onion rings and grilled tomato route then it has to be a beef tomato, and chunky chips rather than saute potato slices, with peas and sweetcorn on the side. Portobello mushrooms get the same treatment as chestnut - fried in garlic butter :)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Talking about talking about cats, I remember in the 70's the popularity of chinese takeaways was rather diminished by rumours of a decline in the local cat populus being traced to the contents of their bins.

Similar rumours in Liverpool in the ‘60s concerning Alsatian dogs in freezers.
We only had prawn dishes just in case.

Craig White | 6727 comments a chinese restaurant in killie got done for serving up, you'll never believe it.......................seagull!..........or so they said! although it's changed hands several times since then, we've never went back!

i do remember, way back, and in an intoxicated condition, taking note of a dead dog in front of the local chinese restaurant at 2 or 3 in the morning. half an hour later upon passing from the other direction.................it was gone! * there was a dim light on in the restaurant, and as i strained by ears i could hear a constant chopping noise and hysterical laughter!

* - from there on is a total lie! :)

You ain't alone. I struggle with them more these days but fortunately our favoured venue does 'stir fry' or 'shashlick' as well which are 'dry' meals served with a side salad if you don't fancy a sauce. They can be desperately quiet some evenings as well. At weekend we went for one in Liverpool as well, and we were the only customers in there, nigh on.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Hmmm? - I just refound what has been a continually overlooked small pack of Smoked Salmon in the Freezer that could do with using up as it was originally bought as an extra treat at Christmas time. No-one else likes Smoked Salmon except me and so I shall make something very seriously yummy up with it, just for me, tonight! ... Mmmm! ;o>

message 1127: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Woahhh!!! - Spooky?!! ... Tesco just sent me an Email about Smoked Salmon?!! ... with a Link to a Recipe for Creamy Smoked Salmon & Lemon Pasta!!! ;oO

message 1128: by [deleted user] (new)

I get almost daily emails from Tesco.
They all begin the same though - 'Your start time for tomorrow is...' :)

We have had to make do with chicken, stuffing, roasties and peas and sweetcorn - run out of other veggies and not got any eggs so couldn't make yorkies either.

message 1129: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's still a really yummy feast to just 'make do' with, Grizzly ;o>

I just can't get that Pasta dish out of my head now?! I think I'll defrost the Salmon tomorrow and then make it up with some Pasta for myself for Monday Tea. I have Half-fat Crème Fraiche in, but I only have Penne Pasta (which is not one of my favourites), and so I will need some other ingredients as well.

I won't be following the Tesco Recipe though - as I have a much nicer Salmon Pasta one that I've made up and enjoyed quite a few times now ;o>

P Cobb | 580 comments Many supermarkets are doing packs of 2 pre-cooked flavoured salmon steaks at present, ie lemon and herb or sweet chlli. My, but are they more-ish.

message 1131: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh? - I shall have to look out for those, P ;o>

I'm much more of a regular buyer of Morrisons Smoked Salmon Pate - and an occasional buyer of any Rich Smoked Salmon, but never any Mild Smoked Salmon, as I always find it to far be too 'fishy', and very flabby and greasy in taste and texture for me.

message 1132: by Martin (last edited Jun 17, 2018 07:52AM) (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments I do enjoy a bit of fish but not smoked or anything with a rubbery texture. Salmon, trout, cod, haddock, plaice etc, our local Sainsbury does a limited range of fresh fish which is adequate which includes small pats of flavoured butters. Usually baked with some butter and some mixed herbs, french or italian and lemon juice then add a little cream to the stock. Served with small new potatoes and green peas or beans or broccoli, drizzled on with melted butter, garlic and herbs or pasta in white wine sauce and mushrooms.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I absolutely love a really good Fisherman's Pie - but I simply can't stand Parsley - so it has to be made up in either a light Cheese or White Wine Sauce ... (*drool*) ;o>

Lez | 7490 comments My friends from the Wirral came here for my 70th birthday and ‘M’ had made her famous fantastic fish pie which they brought in an ice-filled coolbag. No salmon ‘cos I’m allergic but loads of other fish and jumbo prawns. Utterly glorious! There was enough left for 2 more portions for me to freeze. Helped down by some good wine.
A really lovely night.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I've tried Crab but I wasn't that keen - and the only other Shellfish that I've tried are Prawns which I do like very much ;o>

Apparently, according to something I heard on the Radio just the other day, there is a serious Crab shortage at the moment - which means that even Pubs and Restaurants in places like Cromer have had no Crab on their Menus for several months now.

Her husband, ‘D’ specialises in sauces and stuffings and sometimes puds. I’m informed his profiteroles(!) are superb, but M’s sherry trifle is much admired. I don’t like either so can’t vouch for them.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments My Mum's Sherry Trifle is fabulous ... even just the alcoholic fumes that come off it can suddenly have you giggling and sliding under the Table ;o>

Ohhh, and the sound of the Serving Spoon going into it? ... just like the loud squelch noise of a Welly becoming trapped and then being pulled out of Mud? ... well, I'm just sat drooling here now!!! ;o>
