suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Yes, I realised that you meant working, but no, I've never done anything like that ;o>

And I always tactically vote for another Party myself - as I think that the leading one in our area is sadly not as responsive and effective as they always like to claim that they are and they seem to have become extremely complacent on a lot of very important local matters.

Martin O' | 2196 comments When it comes to politics a vote against is ALWAYS the better choice!
I always liked the sentiments expressed in Richard Prior's film Brewster's Millions - a political party that stands for none of the above.
Am I the only one who finds the current governmental institution's record of failure and incompetence beyond comprehension? Every week they are apologising for yet another monumental blunder yet fail to take responsibility for. Take last weeks Windrush fiasco, then Home Secratary Amber Rudd despite protestations of innocence and "support" from fellow ministers including Theresa May finally resigned, if somewhat ignobly, after being caught out on lie after lie. The PM herself has left a trail of fingerprints all over the initial policy yet remains unscathed. Offered in defense was that she had not read the memo in question supported by Michael Gove's protestations that it was unfair that she should be held accountable for this "oversight". Makes you wonder how many other unread memos are lying around the offices of Whitehall.
Furthermore following on from last years utter tragedy of the Grenfell Tower Fire eleven months ago despite the initial outrage expressed in the media they now seem to be rather silent on the whole affair. Once again the political strategy is to drag things on under a pile of bureaucratic entanglement where nothing is done until the investigation is thoroughly examined in an attempt to sweep it all under the carpet. As for Brexit, the good ship Pie In The Sky continues to sail on an ocean of delusional fantasies completely oblivious of the jagged rocks ahead. God help us all says Tiny Tim!

That perfectly sums up how I've been for the past few days and probably will be for a few more yet until it cools down :)

I've been asking for the frozen deliveries as it's minus 21 in the back of those trailers - much more to my liking. The only downside to that is stepping out when the delivery is finished straight into temperatures well above 20 degrees - from one extreme to the other!

Granny | 93 comments We had a blizzard in April, then it melted. Hot weather in May, now cold and rainy. Weather in Wisconsin-if you don't like it, wait five minutes and it will change. Our poor birds were so hungry during the big snow. We got 30 inches in 2 days. The robins were starving. Mealworms were scarce as birders made runs on feed stores for their feeders. I got 2 bags for ours. Now things are in bloom and the rivers have jumped their banks. Lowland flooding has arrived. It's been interesting.

It's certainly like that here in Midlands. I'm back to bedsocks now after wearing my barely-there bikini in Bourton-on-the-water last Monday! ;0)

Or, at least it was until 3 riders decided to take their 'osses through said ford and one decided to leave a smelly deposit ('oss, not rider, that is).

We have spring weather with us now. Everything has seemed to come into bloom all at the same time after our protracted winter. However, Mother Nature doesn't fool me none! Central heating? Extra layers? Thermals?

The heating went off weeks ago and I've been in t-shirt and shorts ever since! In fairness, clear skies have meant that it's been a bit chilly overnight and I have had to turn off the aircon in the truck the past couple of nights until the sun came out.
I'm currently nursing a sunburnt back having been in and out of the garden on Monday without a shirt on (silly me, I should know better).

Wouldn't say no to the Hot Chocolate and Buttered Toasted Teacakes though :)

message 874: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Hmmm? - I have thought long and hard about it too but I think that it might possibly only ever be just me and thee that would ever use it? - and I also worry that this little Chat Thread will not continue without these kinds of posts on it as well?

A lot of the Amazon Music Forum regulars did not really approve of having any kind of Chat on most of the Music dedicated Threads and so a lot of them have not wanted to set up or to contribute to any that are on here either.

That's why I became determined to keep this particular Thread going, even if it is sometimes only just me posting on it(!), for all things that are friendly, and foodie, and fun rather than to set up any other Threads.

The Snails have said previously that it was for friendly chat about just about everything - and I'd really hate for this lovely Thread to become inactive through lack of posts.

I've got a Gammon Ham in the Oven - and I'm just thinking about maybe making up a yummy Cheese & Onion & Potato Bake to go with it? ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I'm watching the Royal Wedding ...

Has anyone got a Tissue? ... I always cry at Weddings! ;o>

EDIT : I'm honestly not quite sure what to make of this Wedding? It was supposed to be a far more personal and an informal occasion but I don't really feel that it is? It feels a little awkward and stilted and the moments that I expected to be a joyful break from tradition like the Gospel Choir singing 'Stand By Me' really didn't get me going at all?

Everyone appears to be dressed in quite plain cold colours and in austere styles. THE much-discussed Wedding Dress is very simple - but is it perhaps a little too simple and, dare I say, also a little too shapeless in a few places around the Sleeves on such a lovely slender figure of a young Bride? And her very brave and beloved Mum just looks to be so small, and alone, and also rather lost amongst everyone else present.

I guess it was too much to hope for any more informality of the Royal Family?

Still? - as long as everyone, including the Bride and Groom, got the Wedding day that they dreamt of then that's all that really matters, isn't it? ;o>

theDuke | 6492 comments How can a dress look so boringly plain, despite the ridiculously long trail it has, and yet cost 140 grand?!

What kind of a or message is Meghan tryin' to put across to the world, when she supposedly purports to be an humanitarian?

message 879: by [deleted user] (new)

I've given that a miss - the excessive coverage and build up to the event (which seems to have been going on forever) has been unavoidable so I've had my fill of it.

Instead, we have been in the garage wrestling with our old mattress so that I can fit it in the back of the car to take it down the tip.
Trying to roll up a king size sprung mattress is quite a challenge but with me squashing it and Mrs Grizzly tying it, it now has loads of joined cable ties round it and is ready to go.
The plan is to chuck it in the car in the morning when Mrs Grizzly goes off to work even though it will probably look a bit dodgy the two of us shoehorning a large cylindrical object into the boot of her car at half past four in the morning :)

Back to cooking dinner now - I've had a chicken in the oven on a slow cook that should be done by now. I've been getting all experimental - have coarse blended some pineapple, put a slit in the chicken skin and forced the puree under the skin before cooking.
Better go and see how it has turned out :)

Wrong Royal Suzy..i think that's more Edwards dept., given all those silly royal TV games he produced in the '80's!

Anybody remember the It's A Royal Knockout tournament of '87...that Edward did, featuring a bevy of TV celebs, including Rowan Actinson, Sue Polard & Lez Dawson, among others & minor members of the royal family, all dressed up in costume, moving playing pieces on a giant outdoor chessboard? God, that was so cringingly embarassing, yet so funny!

Well, you are the lucky one there Lez - I've just looked at the Peterborough Council recycling site and there are no free collections round here. Collection of a mattress would set me back the princely sum of £23.50.
Something else I noticed is that our brown bins for garden waste etc will only be emptied if you sign up for the scheme at an annual cost of £45, which explains why the brown bins have barcodes on them - so the binmen can scan to check that you have paid to use this bin.
I always thought that bin collections were covered by the cost of Council Tax. Obviously not, round here.

I know Barrow in Cumbria charges a fee of £10 to collect - but you can add any number of things to the stuff that is being taken away and so I think that it is a bargain price.

I've never looked into what Stockport might charge as M&D are still capable of getting most things into the Car or asking a Neighbour for help to transport things to our nearest Recycling Centre.

WoW?!! - I've never heard of having to pay for Brown Bins being emptied before ;o>

message 893: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Hmmm? - Stockport Council's website says ...

"We also provide a borough-wide bulky household waste collection service. Large household items like furniture, sofas and fridges can be collected from your property. There is a charge for collecting items. The charges are on a sliding scale according to how many items are collected.

We also offer a garden and building bulky household collection. This service is charged by the hour. We can collect a number of items such as rubble, garden waste and sheds that have been taken apart. Garden and building work is assessed by an officer before it is removed"

... so it might prove to be quite expensive to arrange the Collection of an old Mattress here as well?

message 894: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll squash it, Mrs Grizzly will hogtie it and it'll be bundled in the back of the car and gone before you know it :)

Same up here, Grizzly. This will be the second season (only for summer and autumn, no collection rest of year) that the council has charged for fortnightly garden waste collection, £35. Collection of large household items is now £22, not been any free collections for several years now. There are a couple of charities in this area that will collect furniture/household items for free: one of them helps previously homeless people to furnish their home when they are allocated a more permanent place to stay.

message 896: by suzysunshine7 (last edited May 19, 2018 07:34AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Yep! - we also have quite a few Charities like that around Stockport that will collect things for free, Helen. And one that I've used very successfully quite a few times now, both in Barrow and in Stockport, is the British Heart Foundation ;o>

message 897: by Lez (last edited May 19, 2018 07:40AM) (new)

Lez | 7490 comments No charge for garden waste here yet and they’ve just changed collections from 4-weekly to fortnightly.
My only complaint is the recycling bin having to be put out by 6.30am and they wake everyone up at 7.00! :-(
The charities are very fussy about what they take - they refused a shower stool because it had been in a bathroom (!) and a painted wooden towel-rail because the paint might contain lead. In vain did I protest it was Dulux from 5 years ago.
They can’t accept upholstered furniture without a fire certificate still attached.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments They insist here that our Bins must put out the night before so as to be ready for 7am but they rarely ever collect our Road's Bins before 11am - so it gives me time to put them out in the Morning instead.

I prefer to do that - as the Foxes around here are notorious for tipping them over with a huge bang in the middle of night and then very noisily spreading the rubbish far and wide all over the Driveway and all over the Road too otherwise ;o>

All of our bins - household waste, recycling (but not glass) & garden waste - have been on fortnightly collections for a few years now. Our council doesn't do food waste recycling collections either but the neighbouring council does. Lots of variation in the service provided all over the country.
