No question, Val! It’s just a bit of a nuisance that you don’t have the foresight to know which particular oldie is going to be needed …

Switching to films.... give me two or three flicks that would appear in your top ten all-time horror films.
Isabella - a lot to be said about those old tools. When my dad passed, my uncles let me have my pick from what he had knocking about. it was an odd situation cos Father and me were estranged for many years cos I hated on him for having an affair and leaving Mother when I was 14 and it took me largest part of 10 years to come around and talk to him again. We'd only been reacquainted 3 or 4 years when the big C came and took him. When Mother passed, I also kept most of the tools. In both cases the first thing that hit me was keepsakes but shortly followed by 'These are pretty damn useful'. These hammers, hacksaws, wood-saws, planes and so forth will outlast me! Top quality and more sturdy than anything on the racks now I'm sure.

Let me see...in my top 10 would have to be the original Black Christmas, Halloween H20 and the remake of Dark Water (Jennifer Connelly).
Also worth mentioning...Once Upon A Time At Christmas, Fender Bender and The Autopsy of Jane Doe which is so bloody creepy.

Would def recommend Creed m'dear. Different to yer usual horror as it throws humor into the mix. It works pretty well too, Herbert doesn't try to give us an outright comedy... he sprinkles it around to make it just right. Off top of me head I can only think of four books (incl Creed) that had me giggling and three of em were outright comedies. Totally forgot title and author of one of em and can just remember the cover. Had a water pistol on it. Got it outta the library. Other two were by Robert Rankin. Anti-Pope and Apocalypso. Tbh the former just raised a slight grin on odd occasion but the latter had me pissing meself.. pardon me French.
I don't seem to come across fictional comedy. Any recommendations welcome.
Oh bloody hell, Ru Paul's bloody Drag Race is on TV. They're talking about glory holes and such. I can't say what I think because of this ****** up PC world we live in but safe to say.... not for me. I guess it comes on past watershed so can't complain. Just switch it off innit? I can imagine it appealing to some females. Are you one of em Collette? Won't hold it against ya if ya are. Just not my cuppa is all.
Err if that seemed a bit much.... believe me it coulda been much worse. I started on a full-blown rant and then had to reign meself in and delete.
Yes I know. When it comes to expressing your right to sound off in this free (?) country Blast..... stick to Free Speech For The Deaf in future! Am sure there's a song titled that somewhere?

It hasn't.
I shall delete.

Blastro, I'm not getting new post updates for this thread, will reply tomorrow,

Me neither Collette. Damn annoying!!!

Rant away Blastro! We all know some of the background to your most recent problems and quite understand how you need an outlet somewhere.
I know nothing of your preferred genre of fiction (horror, scary, gore) but books that have made me laugh out loud include :
Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome (there's also a similarly themed Australian book called Around The Bend by John Hepworth et al)
Pioneer, Go Home! by Richard Powell - amazingly this was made into one of those Elvis Presley films "Follow That Dream".
Not fiction but anything written by Patrick Campbell. I have The P-P-Penguin Patrick Campbell and while the ones above may be dated (I loved them many moons ago), this one cracks me up every time. Also The Campbell Companion: The Best of Patrick Campbell. Mind you, Patrick Campbell may also be too dated for modern humour. I also like a lot of Keith Waterhouse's writings.

Best get off up the wooden hill now - it being quarter-past two!
Catch ya next time

Right..
Fender Bender is from 2016. Girl gets into (deliberately set up by the baddie) fender bender, parents go on holiday without her as punishment and baddie goes after her and her pals who she's invited to spend the night with her. Really good movie. Expensive to buy but it's free to watch on Amazon Prime. Those free trials are always handy for something or other.
In The Autopsy Of Jane Doe, Brian Cox plays a coroner in a small American town. His son works with him as well (the family business). The police bring in a dead body of a young woman, and when they start to do the autopsy strange things happen. Defo a film to watch with the lights out. Very small cast and creepy as hell. I think you can pick it up for a couple of pound now.
Surprised re Black Christmas. Canadian film from 1974 and one of THE best slasher films ever. A young Margot Kidder is in it along with Olivia Hussey and John Saxon as Police Lieutenant Fuller. Sorority house gets prank phone calls, killer starts murdering the sorority sisters, and when police trace the phone calls they're coming from inside the house. I give it an airing every November/December. Probably my number one favourite horror film.

Me neither Collette. Damn annoying!!!"
That it is, Val. 😠

TAOJD sounds interesting and might well tickle my fancy. And I might as well check out Fender Bender as we have Amazon Prime. Not quite sure WHY we have Prime because it obviously was dropped when She Who Shall Not Be Named left.. and so I musta signed back up for some reason. Ah.. maybe it's cos I never finished watching The Expanse. Yeah that's probably it. Was really enjoying that before everything went to hell. Haven't gone back to it yet. Keep forgetting. Dunno if ya like Sci-fi (probably not?) but if ya have even a passing interest in the genre, I'd def recommend The Expanse.
There anything else on Prime worth watching since I been away from it?

Devil's a cracking film. Got it on dvd. Another one I really like where people are stuck together is the John Cusack film Identity.

Is that Cusack film the one that takes place in a motel or some such? If it's the one I'm thinking of, it is indeed a fine film. Seem to think Ray Liotta was in it too? Or maybe I'm getting mixed up. I realize I could just Google it (and I often try to explain this) I like to treat online conversations a bit like one in the pub. I mean everybody knows everything there is to know if we consult Google. Best left for when nobody involved in conversation knows the answer to something.. or whatever.
And the Cage film... that sounds familiar too. Is it by any chance that film that is centered around The Rapture? Where the good are taken to Heaven etc?? That was a good film too. I was slating Cage not long ago on one of the Horror threads saying that apart from the hilarious Raising Arizona and a couple more, I was struggling to think of many of his films that I liked. I forgot that one.
For me the best film for claustrophobic outright paranoia where everyone's stuck together is John Carpenter's take on The Thing. Almost unbearable tension at times... and those old effects (more puppetry/models than CGI) still stand up now. Classic horror. Classic cinema full stop.

Is that Cusack film the one that takes place in a motel or some such? If ..."
I think I'll give it a try on Saturday, Blastro.
Yep, you're correct re Identity and Left Behind. Hard to believe Ray Liotta's gone now, isn't it! Nicholas Cage isn't the best actor there ever was but I kinda like him. He's good in The Family Man and that one where his kid goes missing at Halloween. Got it and watched it more than once but for the life of me I can't remember it's name now. I love The Thing. The (prequel) remake is really good too.

Is that Cusack..."
Hey there Collette. I read your post earlier and had stuff to do so decided to come back to it and reply. You mentioned Cage losing his daughter in one particular plot. Didn't think much about it first time round but upon returning, a title has jumped out at me. Is it called Something along the lines of Pay The Ghost? Only reason title stayed with me a bit is cos I remember thinking 'Hey, they're stealing this title from a Transvision Vamp tune!!!' Or maybe the one you speak of isn't that one at all?? Tbf, isn't the phrase 'Pay The Ghost/s' commonly used somewhere - or for some reason - or other, perhaps in relation to a spooky tale or poem? I dunno. If nobody else looking in can tell us without Chootling (cheating by hitting Google) then maybe one of us should indeed find out if I'm correct in any way or form?
The films Cage done that folk really liked.... I wasn't too bothered with em. Face/Off seems to have took critical acclaim from fans and so called 'experts' alike but I could take it or leave it. In fact it bored me a bit... which is the total opposite reaction John Woo flicks usually provoke. Then there's The Rock where Cage co-starred alongside Sean Connery. That film made everyone wet their pants in excitement but... tho I didn't DISlike it, I found it not quite up to all the hype it was getting beforehand. A competent film for my money and that's about it.
DID like Con Air tho. Enjoyed that one no end. Lots of fun to be had with that film and its not inconsiderable cast. That's an 8/10 on the Blastometer. And then there's Raising Arizona... one of Cage's earlier films. It's an absolute scream! If ya never watched it before I'd highly recommend it.... but having said that, ya know how warped my sense of humor is. If anyone forgot how much of an 'Acquired Taste' my SOH is.... just have a peek at my Goodreads profile page, In particular, the 'About Me' section. A couple of bricks short of a load? Me?? I don't even got the load anymore.... n'mind the original two bricks that were the first to go!!
Raising Arizona's a film by The Brothers Coen so that gives an idea of what ya gonna get. Personally I'm a fan of the Coen's films. Her Who Shall Not Be Named once bought me a boxset of Coen Brothers' films but...... yeah you guessed it.... she took those with her too!! Sounds like I'm making this up don't it? I swear I tell the truth. Not just the King books. She took console games and DVDs including many many that she'd bought me over the years as gifts. I know... at least on one of ya out there is thinking 'NOBODY can be that spiteful and petty'. I never woulda believed it meself. Then I witnessed it. This is where I sign off, lest I get into a rant that will quickly turn nasty.

Your ex Mrs is a right piece of work, Blastro. Total spite.

I must try Chariot.

Anita - yep, Identity is the film. And yes I'm in total agreement, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Really dig those type of films that keep ya guessing. Love a film with a good twist. Have ya see The Usual Suspects? That's one of the great film twists. I guess The Sixth Sense is one of the top twisters too... takes inspiration from James Herbert's Haunted I reckon. M Night Shyamalon (Devil etc) likes to add a good 'Woah I didn't see that one coming' to his films too. Dunno if you've seen it but The Village has a good ending. Not sure about the rest of the film but I did think the ending was decent.

I did like The village ,shyamalan is very good,I liked unbreakable ,not as sure about Split but it was OK.
Re'your personal ,so sorry you've been through this ,as you say how can people suddenly turn into such an awful person after all those years with someone?

I did like The vill..."
Thanks for the kind words Anita. I guess the reasons it still smarts are the injustice of it all - her and her new fella all-singing, all-dancing off into the sunset while Louis Armstrong sings 'What a Wonderful World' - while I pick up the pieces (yep, I know.... that's life). Some folk are just karma-proof I guess. And the fact that she's tried to play victim all along if ya can believe that! Our youngest opting to stay with his dad kinda says it all I reckon. And now second youngest has joined us too after his own relationship also broke down. Ya wouldn't believe how much like me at their ages they are. Blastronaut, Blastronaut Jnr and Blastromite all under same roof. Recipe for chaos? : )
Ahh Usual Suspects! What's not to like? I'll keep me gob shut in case there is anyone owt there who hasn't seen it but yeah... great film. Keyser Soze! Badass dude!!
I did enjoy Split.. and thought McAvoy was pretty good value.. as he usually is. Not a great film imo but good. Tbh m'dear, I didn't twig with Sixth Sense... which is unusual for me, being an overthinker. It was one of those films where, after the twist, I was considering watching the film from start again straight away to make sure everything fit. I did catch on quickly with The Others, mind. Borrowed heavily from James Herbert's Haunted.
My memory being what it is, I can't think of the other great film twists and I know there's been plenty.

Anyways... I've been run outta town by the Seriously Serious Police. One male, one female... female arrived driving the inevitable bandwagon to give support to first officer on scene. I had my wrist slapped, told I was naughty for daring to be lighthearted. Lightheartedness is apparently disruptive!! I think it disturbs their concentration when they're trying to read or something. Kinda makes sense I suppose. When I'm being daft (which as you all know, is 90% of the time) in my posts... it must confuse them. A bit like seeing an alien lifeform who's appearance is so removed from what we're used to seeing, that we simply can't comprehend what we're looking at and end up going quite insane!
Anyways, first one on the scene - shall we call him 'Officer Anal'? - puts up a post telling me that because I don't have any book reviews.. or even any pretty pictures of books.. on my profile page.. I don't belong there and am obviously a troll! ME a troll... ha ha ha ha.... Officer Anal then went on to tell me that the moderators shoulda booted me already. This is when I put up a post in reply to these slurs thus defending meself. I made several solid points I reckon but it was t no avail. Upon returning to the thread later, I found that my reply had been removed... yet the one by Officer Anal was still there unmolested. So.... established Officer Anal can jump off the teacher's lap for a moment and run around the playground labeling me a troll.. obviously intending anyone who can't think for themselves read what he put and wholeheartedly agree. Also... mud sticks dunnit? If Officer - longstanding member - Anal says Johnny Come Lately is a troll... then he must be!!! Crafty move taking down my reply and defence so folk visiting the thread don't get to see my version. Ya starting to get a feel for the kinda people running the whole shebang over there now? Perhaps not all the moderators dance to Officer Anal's tune I dunno. I'll wager the majority do.. as nobody stepped in to defuse matters. Nah.. the only moderator that showed up was the female.... shall we call her 'Officer Insignificant But I Got A Moderator Badge That Says I'm Special And I Can Make People Go Away And That Feels BERWILLIANT!!? A bit of a mouthful? Ok... just 'Captain Intolerant'.
So... Captain Intolerant comes flying in behind the wheel of The Bandwagon. She goes on to inform me that I could either walk or be booted.
Oh forgot to mention that my follow-up post stating the utter injustice of having me defence removed (there was no bad language or threats of any sort in either of my posts).... yeah, you guessed it.... that one was also removed. So posters can see me being labeled disruptive and branded a troll but not my responses. What a lovely place eh? And to think I tried to entice yous over there. My bad. Proper fail!!
I gotta add one more thing tho. Not everyone over there is short of a soul. Some nice people over there. I never got to stay long enough to suss 'The Clique'. I was in the process of asking about such things when Officer Anal showed up.
Ok.. yous lot know that playing the village idiot is one of my coping mechanisms in attempting to hold down my depression (shining a light in the dark?) when it's been on the steroids and is really having at me... but I'm damned if I'm explaining... indeed justifying meself to people like that! I wouldn't even if I was willing to. Those kinda folk don't believe in poor mental health (Man up and get on with it) or if they do, they'd be quick to tell me that due to my mental health... I have no business being on a chat site in the first place!!!
Sermon over.

Stick with us, kid, at least we don’t want to shut you out, even if we don’t all share your tastes. 😉

Bullies are probably my No1 hate. And these people are nothing short of that. That first post was simply to inspire other haters to pile in. Of course.. he'd deny that because it's like ya said... they are NEVER wrong! He actually did deny that his post was an attack. Yeah of course... calling someone a troll isn't hostile whatsoever is it? Numpty.

Blastro, you said you had kicked out from St King's forum? On the subject I remember one thread on US Amazon customers forum titled something like "Why Stephen King has horrible sense of humour" (which I totally agree). There were some interesting posts there, and everyone was fine posting whtwver "themses" like.
So, times are changin'...
anyway,
Lus!

I think the only (frail) thread of evidence they have against you is that you appear to be new to Goodreads as you had to re-register in September this year. That makes you look like a Johnny-Come-Lately but so what, everyone has to join Goodreads sometime and everything you posted re Stephen King revealed you had a good depth of knowledge about him. I think maybe Officer Anal didn't like your taste in music!

'Ah here comes the predictable bandwagon' and 'You two must be a riot on a night out!' but that's as far as I went. The rest - especially my first reply - was defending meself, picking apart Anal's accusations. Ah well... nevermind. They can keep their turf and are welcome to it.

I missed that little post ya sneaked in there Isabella. Orwell being onto something might be an understatement m'dear. He was damn well prophetic!!!
EDIT - was originally a longer post but dark clouds followed me. It's CHRISTMAS so I chased away the dark clouds with my own type of Tardis.... called the The Tardiness. It's a HUGE space and time traveling machine... at least it looks that way. In regards to its size and appearance... think large derelict multistory carpark. But upon entering the door at level one (that would normally lead to steps leading to the other levels) you see that it IS actually some kinda technical wonder looking nothing like the outside and with what appears to be many maps of various galaxies dotted around silver and gold colored walls and consoles with many flashing lights and dials. Also... it's much SMALLER on the inside than it looks from the outside... not being much larger than your regular garage where ya park your car.
Anyways.. I used my Tardiness to blow away the dark clouds.
Another random nothingness spewing forth from my keyboard!
Y'know what I'd really like? What few posters we have left... it'd be pretty cool if we took it in turn to write paragraphs to a story! Everyone takes part and add their own take on it.... with each poster picking up the story where the last one left off. It could get pretty bizarre but would be fun. And if everyone posting wants to go 'Serious' I'll go for that too. A thread like this would draw me right in. Something different to do.
This is the bit where somebody tells me 'We already got one of those threads and had it for years you fool!!' - Do I remember a thread like that at one time or imagining it? In any case it would be cool. Would really appreciate it if any of yous were up for it. I may not be able to touch some of yous for storytelling ability but I'll try keep up.... if anyone's game. And I've always got my random stupidity to fall back on. We shall write our very own epic especially for Goodreads! : )
