Blastro, if you're fed up with King (he's bit lame nowadays and too wordy imo except short novels collections), try John Langan's (he's american) The Fisherman or your own Adam Nevill (became big fan of his a few years ago) any book. The Ritual, horror film 2017 was shot by one of his novels, well, book was better.

I certainly agree with you about Stephen king ,at one stage I was buying every Stephen king when it came out but I don't enjoy reading his more recent now as much as I had before, they seem sooo long.Val my taste appears similar to yours, reading many of your favourites,I'm usually reading the story of some poor victim,,I think I'll have to try one of your Australian authors.
Sorry, Val and Blastro, I'll catch up with the reading chat in a bit, maybe. Just now, I'm getting my breath as we lost my sister on Saturday. It was very peaceful but still sooner than we hoped or expected. I'll pop back in when I can, it's a breath of fresh air to read what everyone's up to. Take care, all x
So sorry to hear this news Isabella. As you say, it was expected but not this quickly. Wishing you all the strength you need to cope with this trying time. Take care yourself.
I am sorry to hear of your loss Isabella, even if expected it is still a shock.Sending all the best to you and your family.
Had internet probs (that's nowt new with BT... in our experience) but back now.Condolences Isabella and as you can see above, we're thinking of you. All the best m'dear to you and yours.
Have read many books in me time but haven't (at least don't think I have) read any by writers mentioned by Val and Post - not even Rankin it shames me to say... tho I do like his namesake Robert but his stuff's not crime, more fantasy comedy. Plenty there to ponder folks, thanks for the recs. Guess I started out reading just horror stuff but decided to broaden me horizons a tad around the time t'other half and meself got together. But to be honest, those horizons weren't stretched very far with only two or three strings to my bow of book genres.I'd forgotten we were talking about books after Isabella's sad news and only remembered when rereading the last few post after coming on here to ask this simple question... has anyone else had trouble getting pics up onto their profile recently? I've tried to add a pic a few days ago and it wouldn't have it, saying there's some kinda error and they're looking at it. Have tried again several times since and no joy. Anyone know what's going down??

As far as photos are concerned, I've found that I have to resize the image to reduce the size of the file. It's a bit of a nuisance but I think that the site won't take the resolution of images from current cameras and phones.
I posted this on the original "Amazon Exiles" thread, but in case anyone hasn't seen it, I'm re-posting it here:Has anyone had this message from Goodreads?
Hello Val,
As part of our commitment to improving Goodreads, we are phasing out a number of features in order to focus on the ones our members use most. As you are someone who has used one or more of these features, we are offering you the option to save your content by downloading it before Sept. 1, 2022. Please note that you will be unable to download your content after this date.
We will be phasing out the following for which our records show you've added content:
Friend stories, Quizzes, Trivia, and/or Adding a photo to a book
Goodreads will no longer support the creation of new quizzes, trivia, friend stories in the friend list, or photos to a book page effective July 5, 2022. These features will be removed from Goodreads on Sept. 1, 2022.
To learn more about these upcoming changes or for help downloading your data, please visit our help center.
Thank you for being a member of Goodreads and being part of our global community of readers!

I'm not sure I know what they're talking about. Any clues anyone?
It's officially August 2nd downunder so I wanted to say how sorely Lez is missed, not just today but every day. Any time I got too sentimental, I could rely on an acerbic retort from Lez to bring me back to earth. One of the early 'Zon posters and one of the best!
Agree, Val. Every day when I look at apod, I remember that it was Lez who told me about it. Stars from a star …
Yeh, I can't believe it's been a year already either. I was thinking of her last week when I opened my curtains and a giant live moth dropped down onto the windowsill. Took me ages to catch it and shove it out the window. (Btw... I don't seem to have had quite so many spiders inside my house this year... so far...)
More memories of Lez, she loved Jake Thackray. I’ve just ordered this: https://www.scratchingshedpublishing.....

Yep, belatedly just wanna echo all the above sentiments. Miss ya Lez.In other news, it looks like I'm single... for the first time in twenty-three years..
.. so women to the front, men to the back, not sures to the right and everyone else to the.. err.. left I suppose (I'm kinda ambidextrous).

Good luck for the future, Blastro.

Nice to see you back, Blastro. x
Thanks yous two too. Haven't a clue how to make a fresh start at this age but yep, got no choice. Somebody might be daft enough to take me on eh? : )
Isabella wrote: "All I can say is, my brother did it and twenty years on, they're still together and still happy ..."How old was your brother, Isabella when they got together?
That's what I wanna hear! Not the bachelor type me... least not since me young n wild days. Sounds a bit sad I guess that. Don't think there'll be any dating agency stuff or owt like that tho.
On the voting threads we number 11 on our best days. A similar number on the Aussie Rules tipping thread, 9 for the Premier League, and probably a further 4 or so can be found here. Derek, Sera and Gordon are busy, Huck last heard of struggling with Covid. We can only dream of the days of Liquidator, Telly Addict, Grimmy, Sparky, RAB, Leftin, easytiger, Johnny Bee, Lez, Spacepig, Mondo Ray, RedAlFire and more.
I'm still around but incredibly busy at work (and other stuff) so can't get involved in much at the moment.
Just had a riot trying to get worming tablet down one of the cats at Daughter's where I'm currently residing. She (cat, not Daughter) : ) really didn't want that. Wrapping it in food is no good, she just licks the food off it... so it just had to go in. Put up a proper fight. A bit like one of those comic/cartoon-like clouds with paws and hands poking out.

When the vet demonstrates it (using a quick jab down the throat with a pencil), it looks like a walk in the park. Then you get home and try to do the same. Fat chance!

When I say 'we', I mean our pets. :0
Daughter doesn't like using the neck application stuff. I guess she has her reasons but have never had an issues with it meself. Dust always has the neck stuff.
And I've had me first appointment with me new CPN earlier and guess what.... she's allergic to cats! Of course she is!! Anybody ever felt their life is just one huge piss-take? We managed anyways... got the cats outta the front room and she was only getting a bit sneezy after an hour or so, which was time to leave. When getting dog out later I best keep looking up.... lest a disused satellite falls my way.
Got a question for you the members of this bunch with more wisdom than I.... yeah I know, who's that leave?Right then, pretty simple. Never been too keen on Fleetwood Mac (tho to be fair I never gave em too much a go) but always loved Go Your Own Way. Now, when ya listen to/look at the lyrics, is it kinda saying 'Look, you got all of me but maybe it's time you buggered off' or is it saying something similar but rather than 'Bugger off' it's saying 'Make up yer own mind' y'know as opposed to letting others make it up for ya?
Or neither?? Yeah that'll probably be right. : )
Now, I know most songs are a tad subjective... and also that I'd find the answer somewhere on t'internet but... something to type/talk about I suppose. Yes, my life's filled with wonder and excitement currently.
