Post Soviet (postsoviet) | 551 comments Yes Blastro, he is sick mazafaka with enormous ego expanding correspondingly to his bloated mug.

Of course not all russians are like this, thankfully. But many of them, really many, possess this scary sense of owning the world, even the last yob thinking they are better and smarter than yanks or germans (don't mention even Asians or else), at the same time driving Volkswagen and using Apple. If you ask them to explain why ffs do you think like that, great chance you gonna hear something about mysterious russian soul.
Mind you, I don't hate my working mates, they are always happy to help you out, great dads and loving husbands (wives),... just don't touch geopolitical subjects. Plain facts don't work , it's more a matter of faith, imperial way of thinking? don't know what else to describe it.

And the worst thing Putler is just warming up.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments I suppose the Russian public have had such delusions of grandeur drilled in throughout generation after generation. And whenever the state is caught out - poisonings abroad, doping scandals, their latest 'Special Military Operation' - the public are told "No don't believe it for a minute; it's just the usual anti-Russian propaganda being rolled out by our enemies in the west"
Not that I claim to know anything about Russian politics or foreign policy but that much, I think, we can take as a given. One of the commentators on this conflict was saying t'other night that if this invasion goes badly for VP, it'll destroy him politically. I'm wondering how that can be? Can't see him being legally (tho our definition of that word does tend to differ somewhat) removed from power, I mean who would dare to stand against him?? Also hard to see a coup on the horizon...

... not even so much as a quack!

And for what it's worth, I'm not sure we can count on the Yanks if he does start rolling over NATO countries. Who was it that said (I usually get my quotes wrong but...) something about look at history if you wanna know about the present and future? The American public are a bit too 'We're alright Jack' for my liking. Look how long it took em to get fully involved in WW2. And that was because Japan gave em no choice. And further more.... what if Trump gets back in, in a couple of years time? He idolizes Putin! We can indeed get ready then. That's if the mad bastard doesn't start throwing IBM's around before that.

Sorry folks I'm a proper ray of sunshine today aren't I?

It's not a particularly popular point of view but I can't help but remember that the only nation actually to have used nuclear weapons so far is the USA ... and maybe once was enough for them.

That's not to say that some other mad ruler isn't going to resort to their use in the future, especially when the Putins of this world are deceiving their citizens wholesale. Russia isn't cut off in the same way that China is, though, so why do they not seem to consider that the information they get through state media might not be the whole story?

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah the Chinese seem to've had just one narrative, be it TV or Internet or books or whatever, for a long time. I mean if you live in China you can't Google Tianimen Square. Well... I don't live there so I can't say but I'd imagine if you looked it up over there, you'd see pics of it looking pretty n all, but nothing about protests and violence.
Tell ya what tho Isabella, I think China might have an important role to play in what's happening at the moment when it comes to reeling Putin in. Depends on how far they're prepared to let him go I suppose. I do know that Russia needs China much more than t'other way round.
When it first became apparent that Russia was gonna invade Ukraine (quite a while before they actually did as far as I'm concerned) I thought to meself that when it all did kick off, China might see it as a good time to go into Taiwan. As of yet that's not happened. If they do hold off, I shall accord China a bit of respect....

...y'know, cos respect from me is the be all n end all in geopolitics. : )

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Just having one of my (many) nostalgia trips and watching vids by super-melodic 80s hair metal outfit White Lion and I'm thinking that it's just not fair. Mike Tramp was such a good looking basket!! Just no' fair (stamps feet) that he could be blessed with looks like that when I get one ear sticking out more than the other, a lazy eyelid*, bad skin, and my nose.... we'll not go there. I'm gonna find Mr Tramp and I'm gonna... I'm gonna.... I'm gonna probably turn for a short while. : )

Val H. | 22149 comments Just off to google Mike Tramp.

Yup, he's one of those people that age has been kind to. A bit like the bloke from A Ha. Must be something in the Scandi waters. I bet Collette's a fan!

On the other hand, Wiki says : Tramp has been on record as saying he does not believe that planes brought down the World Trade Center on 9/11. "I have 250 books on the subject and every DVD ever released and firmly believe those two planes did not bring down the Twin Towers." On the "Rock Solid Podcast" (14 October 2021) he also indicated that he believed that the "COVID-19 pandemic" had some conspiracies behind it.

So looks aren't everything.

I had to google him as well, Val. Don't know him or any White Lion songs. He looks a wee bit like the wrestler Shawn Michaels. Re Scandinavia, in all honesty give me Europe's Joey Tempest any day.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Ssssscrrraaaatch! OUCH!!

Actually girls I was referring to 80s era Tramp. I wun't have a clue what he looks like today.. tho obviously I'm now gonna have to have a look.
And for the record I was talking about bedding him not philosophising with him!

So you can all honestly say that were you single, you'd turn yer noses up at him (the 80s version before he apparently went bonkers) if it was on a plate. Especially if you were your younger wilder selves?? I mean shit, I'm as certain as anyone that I'm not gay and I fancy him!!!

Val - 'Looks aren't everything' - you're preaching to the converted here m'dear. If looks WERE everything, no junior Bs would ever have been spawned! : )

Blastronaut | 1061 comments For the record... White Lion were never on my 'Most Liked Bands' list but they did have a habit for putting out some incredibly melodic stuff that stuck in the head. I have some of their albums on vinylbut neve bothered to upgrade to CD. Nevertheless many a rock band has gone to No 1 in the charts with just a fraction of that talent so WL certainly deserve a mention.
Y'know me by now... I couldn't give a toss what's cool and what's uncool to like. I like what I like and that's just how it is. I'm not gonna baaaaa and follow the flock I'm afraid.

Must say Collette, that I'm quite surprised that ya never bothered with White Lion. Woulda thought they were straight up your street.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments On a totally different vibe, does anyone know what's happening re Covid boosters? Doesn't look like there's gonna be any more does it... or at least not a lot. Jayne, our daughter and her fella all had Covid over this last month so that just leaves our eldest and meself who haven't had it. Am starting to wondering if it woulda been better if I had caught it one of the times its been in the house.
I mean what's Johnson and his cronies gonna do, just sit and wait to see how many extra people die in the coming months when their/our immunity is on the plunge? Maybe when twenty or thirty thousand die in a short period they might consider rolling out vaccines for everyone again??

Just googled Mike Tramp and, to me, he sounded a bit like REM. I'm so uncool and musically ignorant that it could be imagination? And yes, his young self is quite fanciable 😉

message 8315: by nocheese (new)

nocheese | 6824 comments Covid seems to have fallen off the radar, Blastro. Johnstone must be so relieved that a huge crisis elsewhere has taken the attention away from Partygate. I recall some talk of boosters for the elderly coming soon, at least in Scotland, but haven't heard any more about it.

Don't know what's happening re boosters but some friends who know about these things seem to think that Covid is turning into a less nasty form and therefore is less dangerous to anyone who isn't compromised in some way. A friend had the fourth booster but he's having chemotherapy and needs all the help he can get.

So, short answer, I don't know but am reasonably optimistic. Or an ostrich ...

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Thankyou Isabella, I didn't think it could be just me. I'm usually not too good at telling if another bloke is good looking but with some it's hard not to notice. Besides, t'other half also agreed when I mentioned it whilst watching said vids the other day.
I was thinking maybe above posters just decided to be contradictory or something. : ) Of course, as the saying goes, we can't all like the same people/thing.

Not sure about the REM thing but I'm no expert. I just love my music without knowing too much about its in and outs. And you can't be any 'uncooler' than me; I mean I like stuff by the likes of Scorpions, Meat Loaf and even Bon Jovi! Not to mention countless 80s 'Glam' or 'Hair Metal' bands- so I'm pretty uncool I reckon. I even wear baggy jeans in summertime - I mean how uncool is that? Been many years since baggy jeans have been in fashion.

If you mean omicron, I saw some footage of a Kenyan doctor describing it as the vaccine we didn't make. It pretty much wiped out the more dangerous delta variant in short order.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Looks like a 'Wait n see' then folks. I wuz starting to wonder if I'd have been better catching it last time it was in the house because the immunity my jabs gave me must be starting to wane a tad. If that is the case as Tim said about old Omicron, let's hope it remains dominant. When J had it, tho she wasn't ready for the hospital, she knew about it. Does have to be said tho that she does have other issues going on presently. Daughter seemed to deal with it ok but said her other half was being a tad mardy about it. Well he will be won't he, he's a fella!! We like to let everyone know how ill we are us fellas.
My vacs must've been doing a fine job considering I slept in the same bed with someone who had the virus... for two weeks. Yes, two weeks before J started testing negative. She's still got a few leftovers from the damn thing now but like I said, she wasn't totally fit n healthy to start with. And she has a touch of asthma so it had a bit of a field day with her. Thank God for the jabs... and for the not-so-nasty variant.

And just to throw yer all into a tailspin I'm gonna put up a link to a rock track that I loved as a kid... and have been listening to over n over for last half hour on YT because, just like a White Lion track did t'other day, it just popped into my head outta nowhere when I was out with the dawg earlier. Tim might possibly remember it (or he might disown it and plead ignorance! : ) ) but I doubt if anyone else knows this one....

Ah yes, one can nod one's head to this.... vigorously if one wants.

Bye for now

Reckon we should have a thread dedicated to 70s and 80s stuff. Or at least a thread where we can just throw links up of owt retro that we fancy? No voting or owt, just tunes! Simples!! Don't tell me, there already is one?? I wun't have a clue how to start a thread else I'd do it meself. Would probably keep it propped up just by meself if nobody else bothered.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments On a sad note... our Cujo went to sleep for the last time yesterday bless him. Vet sent him off to be with best pal Maddie (not to be confused with Molly who we had for a couple of years more recently) again at half-past-three yesterday afternoon.
We'd registered him sixteen years and nine days ago as of yesterday so he didn't have a bad innings. Doesn't exactly kick the hurt into touch but it is true - he did well, especially for a dog with a heart murmur.
That's four dogs gone in the last twelve years and every time ya ask yerself "Why oh why do we keep getting another just to have to go through this?" It's a simple answer tho isn't it. The amount of love and affection they give you in their lifetimes.... how d'ya measure that?

Can't seem to find any digital pics of him so will scan one and put it up as soon as.

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments Are these home Covid tests any good?

I do wonder.

My oldest daughter has had cold symptoms and a short lived high temperature, so did a home test. Confirmed positive, and still positive when retested.
However myself and OH, who both have heavy cold, tiredness symptoms, have both tested negative. As has my youngest who's also had symptoms. Surely you'd think it's all Covid?

So far so good anyway if it is Covid.

Val H. | 22149 comments Copying a post that Duke added to my Aussie Rules tipping thread:

I,m still here folks, but going thru the chemo grind at the moment. Surgery was successful, tumour is no more and the surgeon managed to plumb everything back in the right way round too! That was a few weeks ago, now about half way thru the chemo treatment. All the regular tests have been positive, so with any luck I,ll have the all clear soon enough.

Currently still using this crappy tablet ATM, but looking around for a half decent pappy, as this tablet is playing up now! In the last 12 months, Chez Duke,s has seen 4 PCs/laptops go bandit, 1 not so old TV lose its picture last Xmas, 3 of my vaping mods died as well, and just 2 weeks ago the oven quite literally blew out, taking out the master switch and damaging the hob in the process. There,s definitely something in the air here presently, and it ain,t love! I hate anything electrical stuff as a result! New oven switch and hob installed and more of the folding stuff spent. Add to that the latest lot of utility bills that have come in arrrrggghhh........ how much???!!! Our monthly leccy bill is now twice as much now....yikes!

The woes seen of the last two years haven,t finished with us ,apes, yet.....it s be another tough year. Still can,t be anywhere near as bad as what,s going on it in Ukraine.

Anyhoo..just bobbing in with a wee update, hope to be back soon folks. Could someone pass this on to the other group for me please, I still haven,t got C&P function yet, ta.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Thanks for the kind words you lovely folk, means a lot to me.

Dust hasn't been too happy with the situation. Even tho he's only lived here for around fifteen months (tho obviously he's known us all since he was little), he's missing Cuj. Especially on the day he didn't come back; Dust really didn't want his evening meal but eat it eventually.... and then threw it back up again. He's doing quite a bit of moping around. Still fine on walks but in the house he seems a bit sulky. Dogs... they're really not stupid at all are they? Not that that's news to me, I've been trying to convince folk who aren't so keen on pooches of such things since before I can remember. They think and they certainly feel... the pooches that is, not the dog-haters.
J says absolutely no more after Dust but.... I dunno meself. I feel the same at the moment but give it some time and ya never know.

Cheers
