Blastronaut | 1061 comments Damn that smarts. I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Lez but we've been in contact via email since the days of 'zon, often exchanging music and pics and stuff. Must be the better part of ten years surely. I trusted her enough to confide in her and that's a bit of a thing with me because trust is summat I really struggle with at times.. Lovely gal and a bloody tough one too. She fought that illness tooth n nail.

Gonna miss ya Lez m'dear. Goodnight. God bless.

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Thank you for posting this news, NC.
It's very sad to think that we won't get to read any more posts from Lez. She was a greatly valued member of this forum and its predecessors (I do hope I've spelt that correctly, or do I mean spelled?).
Falkirk will be a poorer place... Hardly bears imagining.

message 7917: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Hiyah Everyone ... x x x

I am sorry that it has come to take me quite so long to find my way back onto the Forum again - and especially in following on from the incredibly sad news posted up earlier this week about Lez ... x

Although I had known for some time that this news was going to be coming - and had also come to realise too, over this last year, that it was now looking like it was very sadly going to be coming much sooner rather than later - I nevertheless still found myself to be completely poleaxed by shock and overwhelmed by such terrible sadness when an old Amazon Forum friend sent me an Email to let me know that there were memorial tributes to Lez being posted up all over the Forum.

It's taken me this long to come online to add my own tribute to Lez as well because, in all honesty, it's been quite a struggle to try to work out how to put all of my badly messed-up thoughts and heart-felt feelings together, never mind to find the words, and then to make myself come back onto the Forum again now while knowing that, as Gordon has already said ... "we won't get to read any more posts from Lez".

And what can I say about Lez that hasn't already been said by everyone else as ... we will all miss her and will miss her always ... pretty much just about says it all, doesn't it? It feels like the end of an era and the Forum will never be the same again without Lez still here with us ... x

Lez could always be relied upon, on all of the old Amazon Forums as well as the Goodreads Forum Chat Threads, to be an almost daily goldmine source of what was often rather extraordinary and fascinating information. These little golden nuggets would often go on to create some really long Discussions amongst several generations of Forum Members - as well as ending up in going in all kinds of really interesting and quite unpredictable directions as a result ;o>

On very rare occasions too there would be something that would be posted up somewhere that would either really tickle Lez's Funny Bone or catch up with her while she was in an extremely silly kind of a Mood - and whenever this happened she would sometimes end up in getting such a helpless full-blown attack of the giggles that were always absolutely hilarious to see coming through in her Posts and to get to be able to join in with. And I know that I will especially miss those delightfully daft moments spent just in laughing away along with Lez most of all ... x

As I have already said in a private message to Nocheese though ... aside from my ongoing very poor understanding of Grammar and all of my decidely downright dodgy efforts at trying to work out how to correctly put together and to properly punctuate my Paragraphs in my Posts ... I don't think that I was ever fully forgiven by Lez for my totally honest and yet utterly shocking admission to her, well over a decade ago now, that I've never been able to 'get into' and to enjoy listening to Classical Music?!

Over the years, she would continue to send me the odd YouTube Link from time to time to seemingly try to test out and to work some more on hopefully being able to break down my indifferent reactions to some of her most favourite pieces of Music! ;o>

I have had a Song that has kept on going around and around inside of my Head for days now - and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's a Song that Lez would really not have liked at all?! - LOL!!! For, although we may have had such a lot in common with each other on just how bloody awful it feels to always be in some kind of pain, and increasing immobile/incapacitated, and housebound, we only rarely ever came to share in our appreciation of much whenever it came down to having any kinds of Thread Discussions about Music.

I think though that I might just risk putting it up in tribute to her on the 'Follow The Lyric' Thread anyway? ... even if only to see if I can manage to get away with doing so without suddenly finding myself being struck down by a huge Thunderbolt sent (with lots of love of course!) from Lez ;o>

Nighty-Night x Sleepy-Tight x and very Sweet Dreams Lez x

Rest in peace ... x x x

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I was struck the other day by the sudden realisation that our Forum Playground on here is called 'Amazon Exiles' and that although it will hopefully still continue to carry on as a Forum despite now being ... Ex - as in without Les ... we will still carry her onwards with us as her chosen real-life as well as Forum name just happens to make up the last three letters in 'Exiles'.

Probably sounds a bit daft me mentioning this? ... but I unexpectedly found this rather odd little coincidence to be quite touching and also comforting. The thought that Les may have gone now yet she still hasn't completely left us. It's another thing for me to still be able to smile about whenever I think about her ... x x x ... ;o>

Very true. When I hear talking kind of: "you can sniff my dick, arse hole" I know I'm witnessing conversation between two old friends.

Yes, first thing I noticed about Lez, was her straightforwardness, no polite lies. I still have much to learn from her.

That made me think of what D's said in the past, Tim. He lost his best mate Andy 2 months or so back to the dreaded C. Doesn't want to remember him when he was so ill there though. He'd rather remember sitting with him in The Goodyear on a Saturday afternoon sitting there peeing themselves to the tales/opinions from the past and present of their mates the 2 Jimmy's, who are both in their late 70s.

I hope Jill gets a real sense that Les will live on, not just in our memories, but in our daily lives as Serial mentioned above. I was turning in the other night about 1.00am and heard a magpie singing (Australian magpies have a beautiful song; no idea why this one was up in the dead of night) but I immediately thought of Les and her love of birds.

Helen The Melon | 3422 comments Lez liked bats too...

I found a "grounded" pipistrelle during the daytime the other day. It was clinging on to a rough bit of harling near my front door but was completely immobile for several hours. The SSPCA were duly called and a wildlife officer from Inverness arrived about four hours later. He didn't think it was injured but it obviously wasn't right so he took it to their Inverness rescue centre where they will check it over, keep it warm, feed it and keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure it's healthy. If it is ok and it perks up they are going to bring it back here and release it later this week.

I managed to take a quick photo:-

Isabella | 1370 comments Bats are lovely, Helen. A good few years ago we were staying at palace that had open fires, and a bat fell down the chimney (it was summer, so no fire). I picked it up and put it out of the window. It was incredibly light and warm. I've since learned that it wasn't the best idea to pick it up, as bats have been known (rarely) to pass on rabies. The luck of ignorance, I suppose.

They fly around here after dark but they're so fast, we have no hope of identifying what kind they are.

Yes, definitely not a good idea to handle bats without gloves on! I knew about them transmitting rabies so made sure I didn't touch it.

We have quite a lot flying around here too, usually from early evening onwards but I've not worked out where their roost is yet. You'd probably need to get a bat detector to work out what species you have, Isabella.

I hope you have been kept updated by the SSPCA and that it's all good news about it picking up and recovering well from whatever was wrong with it? It was very lucky that it happened upon your Door in it's hour of need and that you knew exactly what to do and who to ring for help ... x

message 7941: by TheFoe (last edited Aug 20, 2021 03:16PM) (new)

TheFoe | 2638 comments I have a lot of bats in my attic. They fly in every year and leave sometime late in the year. I spoke to a wildlife conservationist, (I think that was their title), about 10 years ago, he said he saw at least a hundred leave my house. You can't kill them as they're protected, not that I'd want to, but you can board the outlet once they have flown away. I've let them get on with it, as they do no harm and eat all the pesky insects.

I'm pretty certain it was last year, I have a terrible memory, that I needed to go in the attic to look at my water tank. It was really hot and I was balancing precariously on some wooden beams as the attic isn't totally floored. Anyway I must have hacked off a sleeping one, it was in the afternoon, and it flew right past my face. You've never seen somebody backtrack fast on beams before, and then jog down a ladder, scared the hell out of me!

Hi Suzy. No, not heard anything from them since they came to collect it. They did say that they are extremely busy at the moment so I just assume they will bring it back one nighttime and release it without notifying us. Unless it's had to be taken down to their main National Wildlife Rescue Centre near Alloa?

I don't know a huge amount about bats but I do know that an exposed bat on the ground or a wall in the daytime is in trouble and needs help. Due to them being protected by law, and possibly carrying rabies, I thought it was best left to the experts to deal with it!

Crikey Foe, I don't think there's that many here. And I don't think they're roosting in my loft - I don't want to go up and check! We are surrounded by trees so they could be roosting in them. Maybe. Not sure.

Awww Nick!!! ... while I obviously feel for you being so suddenly and unexpectedly startled that it then sent you into a full-blown panic and a mad scrabble to get out of the Attic so fast that you nearly came incredibly close to putting your Foot through the Floor and through the ceiling of the Room below! ... I'm also sat here trying my best not to howl out loud with laughter while I am imagining the scene!!!

It took my Dad almost 20 years of living in this House before he finally got around to securely laying down floorboards in the Attic - and during those 20 years he managed to put his Foot (plus a good half of his Leg too!) through the Floor and through my Bedroom Ceiling, not just once ... or twice ... but a grand total of FIVE TIMES!!! ;oO

I came to learn quite a few new unrepeatable swear words during my teen years all thanks to my Dad - whilst I was sat on my Bed, completely covered in lumps of Plaster and ripped and torn pieces of Wallpaper ... gazing up in utter disbelief at his Leg once again hanging down through yet another huge hole in the Ceiling!!! ;o>

Awww, it is a shame that they didn't let you know, Helen.

According to Google, finding a Bat during daylight like that may have been down to an injury or to it maybe being a disoriented Juvenile at this time of the year - or it may simply have become dehydrated or starved from being accidently trapped indoors somewhere for far too long a period of time ... and as a result of that becoming overcome with exhaustion and in need of a feed and hydration to bring it back around again.

The wildlife officer did say that they can be brought down & grounded by heavy rain - they then get cold & hungry and don't have the resources to get themselves back up flying & into their roost.

It will remain a mystery as to what was wrong with the one I found & whether it recovered, or not!

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Chester Zoo has a mighty fine bat enclosure. Dunno who (if any) on here's been but it's worth price of admission just for that s'far as I'm concerned. Can't remember how many bats they told us they have in there but it's a lot, like a hundred-or-two maybe. They're all over the place and it's incredible how close they get without walloping straight into ya. And because it's dark in there, you don't clock half of em until that leathery flap cracks next to your tab.... or a large shadow suddenly descends outta nowhere in front of yer face. Some of those buggers they got there are not of the tiny variety either.
Gotta admit it honks a tad but 'part from that... ******* A!!!
