I'm so sorry for the very delayed response in getting back to you, P. I was offline for a while with a mild enough but persistent Chest Infection as well as another really challenging Arthritic episode and I am only just getting around to catching up on past Posts across several of the Threads.

Unfortunately, our most accessible'ish and more habitable larger Caves in the Cliff Faces overlooking the Town Centre have often been used over the decades as places to sleep and shelter in by the homeless - including many Drug Addicts and Alcoholics.

This has been of a particular worry to everyone concerned as the Caves tend to keep on with filling up with thousands of discarded Needles, plus decomposing Food and the Rats and Insect-life that it attracts, soiled Bedding materials - dangerous rubbish and waste that has to be cleared out by the Council from time to time.

And because a few of those particular Caves involve quite a difficult climb up a sheer Sandstone Cliff Face, sometimes using Rope Ladders that have been bought or made up for the purpose of accessing them, sadly several people have come to be found dead inside the Caves as a result of an Overdose, getting too ill to be able to move or to get help from anyone, or found lying dead beneath them after having terrible falls while trying to get into and out of them ;o<

Some of the other Caves and many miles of Underground Tunnels beneath Stockport Town Centre have had far more unusual and quite interesting uses and reuses over the Centuries though ;o>

Maggie's Caves date back to 16th Century and were once used as Rock Dwellings for families and also as Brothels(!), Navvies Quarters (for the mainly Irish Navvies who built the Viaduct in 1839) and, in far more recent years, as part of a Factory Basement ...

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co....

I forgot to mention as well that there is also an interesting and rather disturbing Story, if it is to be at all believed, about one set of Steps going down from the higher part of the Town into one of the lowest parts of Stockport called The Underbanks.

My Nanna and several other older folk over the years have all told me the same Story about these Steps - and I must admit I've always hated having to use them as they originally were, at times very narrowly enclosed by Walls and Buildings over them making them tunnel-like in several places - very cold and very dark!- as well as extremely steep in height and quite shallow in depth. They were also a badly worn long set of Steps that were the stuff of daymares as well as nightmares even when I was well into my 20's and best avoided at all times if at all possible! ;oO

They are still called 'The Devils Steps' by the older generations around Stockport and the story of why they were called that can be found here ...

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Hmmm? - is anybody fancying a savoury Hot Cross Bun this year? ;o> ...

... I'm open to trying to them out - although I think that it might mess with my Head a bit?! - as they look just like a typical Hot Cross Bun to my Eyes but they obviously won't taste anything at all like one when in my Mouth ;o>

I also like a Hot Cross Bun to be far less like some of the cheapo ones that are often very soft and fluffy and far more like a Bread Roll or a Tea Cake - as I prefer the traditional soft and yet also dense Hot Cross that are slightly more doughy in texture. Ones with a bit more of a bite, flavour, and substance to them.

I'm not sure whether these will pass my Texture Test? - but I'll see if we can get a pack of them ordered through the Asda Delivery Slot that I have got booked in for the end of this month ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments We tried out some Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Triple Berry Hot Cross Buns (4 for £1.25) a week ago - and were extremely disappointed to discover that they were nothing more than just soft fluffy totally tasteless Muffins with only just a few incredibly minute pieces of extremely bitter Fruit in them ;o<

However, having been SO impressed by SO many excellent Iceland Branded Products during the Pandemic - which has been an absolute Godsend to us as they have pretty much been our most regular and only consistent source of all of our Essentials throughout a year when we so often couldn't get any Delivery Slots with any of the other Supermarkets around here - I decided this week to try out their basic range Iceland 6 Hot Cross Buns @ £1 each or two packs for £1.80.

And M&D&me enjoyed a pack of these SO much the other day that I have already put four packs into our Online Trolley all ready for when I next put together a full Iceland Order ;o> ...

Val H. | 22152 comments They look yummy Suzy (I.e. the Iceland ones). I agree with you about texture. I like the original type of hot cross bun, nice and dense with just the right amount of fruit. There's much excitement here (on social media) re the release of Aldi's Hot Cross Bun flavoured gin which will hit the shelves on Feb 24, priced at 10 quid. I've never really seen the point of flavoured gin but last week I was given a bottle of Shiraz gin and told I will love it. Have yet to crack it open.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Oooh? ;o>

Is it just me thinking this? - or are Flavoured Gins suddenly seeming to be taking over the World as we know it?!! We have all-sorts of Flavoured Gin or Gin Flavoured things turning up in the Supermarkets and there are also Gin Bars opening up here, even while we are still under continual National and Local Lockdown whilst enduring this Pandemic.

I tried Gin once ... ARRRGGGHHH!!! - it was just SO awful that I still struggle to understand how anyone might ever enjoy it and want to drink it for pleasure - LOL!!! ;o>

Yet it certainly is THE drink right now, isn't it? And we have got SO many Places local to us that are dedicated entirely to the making of Flavoured Gins.

I think it is Isabella, on these Forums, who is also very fond of a Glass of Gin?

Val H. | 22152 comments I am very partial to a gin and tonic with ice and a fresh lemon slice or two! Yum!

message 7470: by Isabella (new)

Isabella | 1370 comments I do enjoy a G&T, Suzy, but not gin on its own. We were given a cucumber gin at Christmas but we weren't keen. It was just too cucumbery. Sloe gin is good but most flavours just seem a bit trend driven as do some of the so-called 'premium' tonics.

I agree with Val, ice and a slice is just right!

Lez | 7490 comments Gin and lime was my first taste of alcohol when I was 12. It was my choice for a few years till I discovered whisky. My mum tried to ween me onto a genteel sherry but I hated it.
No twee additions like lemon please!

Val H. | 22152 comments I used to drink gin, lime juice and water for a long time but now I find it very dull and depressing. I like the oomph that tonic water lends. I do like Hendricks gin which I think has cucumber "overtones" or some other swanky word.

One of my Christmas traditions (passed down from my Mum but not embraced by any of my family) is Harveys Bristol Cream Sherry with mince pies. I rarely drink sherry at any other time but it's always in the cupboard in case a recipe calls for it. In fact much of my alcohol collection (which is rather extensive considering I'm not much of a drinker) was purchased because of recipes for cakes, etc. I also use alcohol as part of my Christmas decorations because there are so many colourful drinks and/or bottles - Campari, Advocaat, Creme de Menthe, Bombay Sapphire gin, Chambord, etc. Lined up on the mantelpiece with tinsel intertwined, they twinkle and look very festive.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I dunno if this is a Irish thing or more of a family kind of thing? - but all of the Alcohol in the House was brought out all ready for any Visitors and it used to get placed, pride of place, on a Silver Tray under the Christmas Tree ;o>

All of my extremely large extended family ... all of my Great Great and my Great Aunts and Uncles, my beloved Nan, my Nanna and Grandad, my many Cousins, and us as well did it.

I still remember just how confused I used to feel whenever I went into other people's Houses at Christmas time and saw piles of Presents tucked underneath their Christmas Trees instead of colourful collections of beautiful and unusual Spirit and Liqueur Bottles!!! - LOL!!! ;o>

It's very strange, Val, but - while it would seem that the Aldi Hot Cross Bun Gin is made over here in the UK by Manchester Drinks Co based in Bury - I can't find manage to find any mention of it being sold in Aldi Stores in the UK this Easter?

Maybe it will suddenly be announced nearer Easter? Either that or the Gin lovers of Australia are getting treated to a very exclusive and limited edition Flavoured Gin ;o> ...

Our Aldi seems to be far more in favour of stocking a variety of Haysmiths Flavoured Gins instead ... Blood Orange & Peach, Grapefruit & Rose, Apple & Ginger, Raspberry & Redcurrant, Rhubarb & Ginger, Seville Orange & Lime, Plum & Clementine, Summer Trifle, Mulled Winterberry, and Sloe ...

Blood Orange, Rhubarb & Ginger, Parma Violet, Snow Fairy, Mystical Unicorn, Raspberry & Rose, Watermelon Crush and Strawberries & Cream

Time to dig out the casserole dish for the those pets of more advanced years. A long slow simmering. after a rigorous tenderising, should do it.

No, we'll get there but I think it's a mistake to set out any dates - Bozza will have his loony backbench element like Steve Baker pushing him to bring things forward or not allowing him to push them back if the data's less encouraging than hoped for. The idea of all schools in England going back en masse in 2 weeks seems less than wise to me - infection rates are currently highest among primary age kids (and secondary won't b far behind) who don't suffer but are great at spreading.

message 7497: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I honestly don't think though that Boris had any other choice today but to let everyone in England in on knowing that the Govt is focussing on putting together and making plans and having dates in Mind.

They aren't exactly set in stone though because we all know that none of this will be happening if the Infection Rates suddenly start to soar again and the Death Rates as well.
