Craig White | 6727 comments being a hobo, like gordon, i'm often on buses around town, and quite often, mask wearers (me, obvs) are in the minority despite the guidelines. junkies are obviously exempt, as it gets in the way of self-medicating, and those with (genuine? aye right!) exemption cards wear them on a lanyard like a badge of honour (and of course loudly tell the rest of the bus why they're exempt). most people don't know how to wear a mask/covering properly - the worn on the chin style (i call it the 'jacques loussier') - the nose exposed, the mouth exposed (that takes some doing, but is a thing), and the champions of all being those who take their seat before masking. oh, ye got me rantin' now, jim!

Brass Neck | 3979 comments In the early days of so-called mandatory masks on buses I sat behind two teen/early 20s girls. They wore their masks correctly but every time they needed to say something to the other they pulled the masks away from their faces the better to vent an aerosol of bodily fluid. Given their gender and age this happened continually.
I don't get people, often on their own so not in a social grouping, wearing face coverings in the great outdoors.
I don't get the triumphalism of those who declare, like Blind Col, "I'm exempt" - I made him wear one when I gave him a lift!
Above all I loathe those who, as alluded to by Tech, have a mask somewhere on their face but usually exposing their nostrils or worst of all as a chinstrap. I saw one fit, healthy looking 20-something bloke in Tesco's dangling his mask from his hand!
Come on people, it's not about protecting yourself, it's about basic consideration for others (but then these'll be the one's vaping indoors, bellowing over music, dancing when told it's verboten; British/English exceptionalism at its finest - rules is for other people ....... Britain never, never shall be slaves after all). It's our absolute right to hasten our own debilitation, burden the NHS and die young, whether by careless disease spread, refusing vaccinations, excessive imbibing, shunning exercise or committing economic suicide and f*** anyone who tries to tell us otherwise.
Then again last Saturday I chose to pay to sit for several hours in a social club with 80 people, some tables with 10 people almost certainly from 5 plus different households, none masked, myself included, and many shouting and shrieking at each other cos they sure sure as sh*t weren't there to listen to the band. I'll probably do it again this Saturday!

Sera69 | 1924 comments Government policy has always been and still is herd immunity. As many people infected as possible and the sooner the better. When this was roundly ridiculed at the start of lockdown they went into "pretend" care mode but not one decision since has been to protect or shield people from Covid. Wearing a mask on public transport is obviously for lefty shills and unBritish traitors. Those intelligent mouth breathers and chin-strap fashionistas should be applauded as much as we once did those lazy, complaining, layabouts that pass for "staff" at our hospitals. Boris is getting us catgirls and manga so we should all praise his mighty omnipotence. Eat Out! Back to School! Fill the offices! Mask free or Die!

One death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic. And somewhere in between is the opportunity for profit.

How Billionaires got $637 million billion richer during Covid

I'm with the meme that says when you get to a billion let's just give you a gold star and a parade, we'll bake you a cake and say congratulations you won at life, well done. Game over, retire, let someone else play, now.

message 6764: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22157 comments Here in Victoria things are going a bit better. Today we had a grand total of ZERO deaths (the first time since July 13). We only had 39 new cases. 118 people are in hospital of which 11 are in intensive care. Our 14 day average case number for metropolitan Melbourne is 52.9. Once it gets below 50 we may see some lifting of restrictions. From yesterday, our daily outdoor exercise was increased from one hour to two; the nightly curfew started at 9.00pm rather than 8.00; public playgrounds re-opened and people living alone were allowed to nominate a single other person to visit them in their home. Apart from that, masks are still compulsory outside the home, all shops and businesses are closed apart from food outlets, everyone is restricted to a 5km radius from home and schools and child care centres remain closed.

Val H. | 22157 comments I get regular emails from our two biggest supermarkets. Today's one from Woolies says:

Gardening and floral categories are growing almost 40% more at Woolworths and almost 20% more at BIG W than last year and the change in season has us outdoors. Lavender and Azaleas are proving popular and so are garden ornaments (Stranger fact: we’ve already sold more than 60,000 Meerkat statues so far this spring!). Indoors, sales of succulents have tripled and leafy foliage has doubled as we bring fresh growth into our homes.

60,000 meerkats?? Why??

message 6766: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Because you rarely ever see a single Meerkat? ;o>

According to what I've read ... Meerkats are extremely social in the Wild - choosing to live in tight-knit groups of up to 40 individuals. Lone Meerkats are also very difficult to integrate back into any social groups, and so once separated, a Meerkat may have to remain alone for it's entire life. And nobody with a heartfelt love of adorable little Meerkats would ever want for that, would they?

I'm guessing that this also applies to Garden Ornament Meerkats as well, Val ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Also posted elsewhere ;o> ...

Early on, when Reusable Masks weren't readily available or of much of a fair price or quality either, I bought some of the very first Nano-technology layered ones that were reasonably enough priced at the time and were also the very best ones around that I could find.

And I still really like them now - but I do have one issue with them - and that is that they could be just a little more generously cut as they are lacking somewhat in just having an extra couple of centimetres at the bottom that would just ensure a much more secure and snugger fit by them extending a little further underneath the Chin.

Now Reusable Face Masks are far more readily available almost everywhere and many of them are also 3 ply now as is recommended - plus there are also a few more now that have got that special layer to them that offers some extra form of protection.

I buy a lot of our Groceries Online from Iceland and they suddenly started with selling Face Masks a few months ago and, as they were so cheap, just three for a fiver, I thought that I'd buy some out of curiosity as much as anything ... and they have surprised and delighted me by turning out to be absolutely brilliant! ;o>

I've been buying them with every Iceland Shop ever since as there is a limit on buying them (only 4 at a time) and so I've continued with buying them on their three for a fiver offer.

The looser fit and extra fabric that they have to them allows for more ease of talking (and laughing too ;o>) without also feeling the frequent need to adjust them afterwards like I sometimes need to do with the other Masks that I had previously bought - and I really like the quality of fabric layers of these Masks as well.

Anyway, I just thought I'd flag them up on here in case anyone else out there is also interested in trying them out ;o> ...

Val H. | 22157 comments Suzy - this one's for you. A friend of my daughter-in-law runs a small business making cakes for special occasions - mainly weddings. They have been hard hit by Covid restrictions so she has been trying to do things just for herself to stimulate her creativity. This is a cake she posted on Facebook today. She said: "There are still more flowers to paint, more fillers and foliage and a heck of a lot more layers but damn it felt good. And yes that's a cake, using cocoa butter and petal dust as my paint, so really this is kinda work. But even if it takes me a year I don't care. Thanks for inspiring me to pick up the brush."

message 6778: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Sep 17, 2020 08:13AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's a real shame that she can't be allowed to, or manage to, adapt her Business to doing it through Facebook and by Delivery to the Doorstep - because the demand is still there and, in fact, is even greater than ever before due to the lack of people still being able to continue with baking and creating Cakes and Customers are now either having to go without or try to make their own Cakes and Treats up out of a much more limited Stock of Grocery Supplies instead.

The ones who have adapted here have really thrived in their Businesses. They mainly offer up Boxes of the most beautifully made Cupcakes for Local Delivery and tend to sell out within mere hours of advertising them on Facebook.

A lot of these Businesses have also branched out into making connections with other Local Suppliers of things like Artisan Breads, Jams, and Savoury Items and now offer up Afternoon Tea Boxes which are even more all the rage here right now.

People have been ordering them in over the National and the Local Lock-downs as special Treats for themselves, or for family Birthdays, Mother & Father's Days, Anniversaries ... and, of course, arranging for them to be sent on to family members and friends that they can no longer get to go and visit anymore.

I started to order an Afternoon Tea Box for one for a friend of a Neighbour a few months ago (as my Neighbour rarely uses the Internet and doesn't know how to use Facebook) when I realised that the lady who would be receiving it was living in a small Care Home that had 9 other Residents living there.

It didn't seem fair or kind to only just buy the one Box for her - and so I asked the Girl who makes them up if she could make up several Boxes that would be more than enough for 15 people (so that the Carers could also share it with them) and then my Neighbour and me clubbed together and paid for them all between us.

And apparently they had one Hell of a knees-up celebration! We were sent Photos and there was singing ... and dancing! ... as well as the Afternoon Tea that was delivered to them with a few lovely extra freebies thrown in ... Napkins and Balloons, and there was also some Bunting and several Vintage Cake Stands that were provided on loan ... and the Care Home took charge of putting up the Decorations and they provided all of the Bottles of Fizz as well!

It sounded like such a fabulous party and a really good time was had by all ... and I just wish that Sylvia and me had also been able to be there to share in it all with them! - LOL!!! ;o>

Maybe your Daughter-In-Law's friend could find a way forward on doing something like this? Meeting the needs of all of those now indefinitely stuck at Home under Lock-down? The only drawback could be that it might restrict her time in just enjoying painting for pleasure as the Cake Bakers who do it around here have chosen to work such incredibly long hours as their adapted to Lock-down Businesses have really taken off and, because they are never ever short of Customers, they usually have to take Bookings for their Boxes and Deliveries well over a month in advance these days.

The business is mainly her and her husband and they have a young toddler as well. I think they do what they can but delivery is a problem. We are all restricted to a 5km radius at present and maybe booking a third-party delivery makes the cakes too expensive, I don't know.

It looks like they really are doing everything that they possibly can and more besides to keep their Business going, Val ...

"STAGE 4 LOCKDOWN UPDATES: Yes we are still baking! We are currently offering our online shop orders only, with a 2 day turn around unless fully booked. These are pick up from our retail store in Elsternwick ( Thursday to saturday only) or our production kitchen in Mckinnon ( Monday to Saturdays) Delivery is not available for our main range of cakes but if you are outside of our 5 kms you may like to send an uber to collect for you. We also have our new range of Cake freight cakes which can be delivered to your door via courier on Fridays. Hit the button on the right to see the Cake freight items. Please note we are short staffed so we may not be able to answer the phone as fast as you would like. Ordering through the online system is the best and fastest way to book a cake. If your date is available on the calender then we are available to bake it for you x Thank you for your support during these times. x"

... so, if they don't manage to keep on going, then it most certainly won't be through want of trying and doing their very best to adapt themselves to trading through a Pandemic and under Lock-down.

And their Cakes really are exquisite too. I freely admit that I tend to be a little bit too obsessional and particular when it comes to attention to detail on Cake design and decoration. The execution and perfection of the finish and presentation of these Cakes is a real joy to behold ;o>
