Don't Kill Snails with Salt ... Creme Eggs & Toasted Teacakes ... Biscuits & Bench Stories, Life, the Universe, & Everything!

One of the Binmen put up something on his Facebook Page about how terribly stressed and vulnerable the few Staff that were still fit and well and available for work were feeling while out working and it ended up in getting passed around until it was posted on a Community Facebook Group Page.
They've been sworn at and abused, even chased while trying to socially distance, and also spat at and threatened - and it makes my Blood boil to know this is happening here in parts of the Stockport Borough so I just wanted them to know that most of us are extremely thankful and grateful for their ongoing Service.

Anybody here old enough to remember those promotions petrol companies used to offer back in the 1980s? Something along the lines of collect tokens every time one filled up one's car, something like that. My dad used to do a lot of driving from Wales to London, as part of his job with the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (M.A.F.F). In the 1980's he accrued enough 'points' to redeem them for a whole load of new bathroom towels...and we're still using them today! Really good quality, nice and thick, heavy and well stiched together.
Somehow, i doubt i could get as good quality items today. I wouldn't be surprised if such items are made in China these days....cheap and asty last 5 minutes crap, along with much of everything else they produce these days!
I'll stick with the ones i've used for 35+ years!
Green Shield Stamps, Duke.
My old man used to get them by the book load after filling up his truck :)

Yep! - my Dad did too but there was rarely anything of any great quality or value to cash them in on so I reckon Duke's M&D did very well indeed to get their indestructible Bathroom Towels. My Dad would usually cash them in for Crystal Wine Glass Sets and donate them to his NHS Department's Staff Christmas Raffle - and surprised himself two years running by winning them back again! - LOL!!! ;o>

Hmmm? ... were they for a local Department Store perhaps, Lez?
We used to get Co-Op Stamps which we all meticulously saved in our extended family circle but M&D rarely ever got around to cashing them in so we mostly used to give them all to my Nanna.
I'm pretty sure though that they were usually blue ones?

'Tesco founder Jack Cohen was an advocate of stamps; he signed up in 1963, shortly after his competitor Fine Fare adopted S&H Pink Stamps, and Tesco became one of the company’s largest clients. But Cohen was a fan of pile it high and sell it cheap, and in the mid-1970s Tesco faced cost problems associated with not integrating its stores. In 1977 Tesco launched Operation Checkout, price-cutting aimed at countering the new discounters such as Kwik Save. A decision was made to abandon Green Shield stamps, saving £20m a year and helping to finance price reductions.'

The Co-Op also used to issue trading stamps (Dividend Stamps). They were blue. Not to be confused with Brooke Bond Dividend stamps (orange), which came with packets of tea
I used to like looking through the Green Shield Stamps catalogue to see what you could buy with completed books. The biggest-ticket item in the catalogue was a car (a Ford Escort, if I remember correctly): a snip at 2,000 books of stamps. I wonder if anyone ever got one.

They also feature musically too:
"Progressive rock band Genesis, in the song "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" from their 1973 album Selling England by the Pound, invented the “Knights of the Green Shield” to allow the pun "Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout". This was part of a comic theme related to supermarkets and encapsulated in the album's title.
British comedy rock group Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band references a woman who runs a fictional “Green Shield Library” in the song “Piggy Bank Love,” written by Neil Innes on their 1967 debut album “Gorilla.”
Jethro Tull, another progressive rock band, also mentioned Green Shield stamps in the song "Broadford Bazaar", which was about a town on the Scottish Isle of Skye which band leader Ian Anderson lived near: "We'll take pounds, francs, and dollars from the well-heeled, And stamps from the Green Shield".
Nikki Sudden wrote a song called "Green Shield Stamps" for his last official album The Truth Doesn't Matter. It describes his childhood in Britain, and how his mother used to save the Green Shield stamps. There is also an acoustic solo version from the Cake Shop, New York, on 24 March 2006, recorded two days before his unexpected passing."

As I've mentioned before, my old man worked for Fine Fare/Shoppers Paradise. He also used to bring home a box full of tins that were either dented or missing labels, possibly also damaged boxes and packs of stuff too - sure he used to pay about a tenner for them. We always seemed to end up with a lot of tins of peaches :)

"I don't belong here," cried old Tessa out loud.
"Easy, love. There's the safe way home."
And thankful for her fine, fair discount, Tess co-operates.
Comic isn't the adjective I would use.
Just had the postman deliver a set of kitchen knives, which he left on the doorstep, knocked the door then walked away when I opened the door.
This was followed by two emails from Amazon in quick succession - the first saying that my parcel had been delivered (collected from collection point??) and the second asking me to take a quick survey to rate my experience of using an Amazon Pickup Location.
I've had a look at the questions and would love to tell them just how convenient my doorstep is as a pickup location, how easy it was for me to get there and how I would happily use it for every delivery, but these answers don't appear as options in their survey.
Ain't that a shame :)

Not my words Gordon, but I agree with you about the comic value. They're straight from wiki:-)

Did somebody mention Cake? ;o>

Ah yes, that's was it. I recall Dad used to get quite a lot of homeware items just from using his accrued stamps. Those were the days eh!

...and then they gave a website address.
The man's a fool. Clearly if you keep kittens in an aviary, they'll freak out the birds. Everyone knows the best place for kittens is a fish tank!

TECH ? ! ! ... have you been off out on a Forum Wind-Up Mission again ? ! !
HA HA HA HA HA!!! ;o>

I got me cake in the end! A little one..but a cake non the less! :)

I can hardly expect for M&D to work out anything online while under this Lock-down - and, to be honest, I'm the only special treat planner and organiser of the family and they don't usually tend bother much whenever it comes to my Birthdays. My 50th came as a complete and wonderful surprise to me that they had actually ordered and bought me Flowers and a Cake ;o>
I must admit my Mum has asked me a couple of times this week to buy myself a Cake and to make sure that I put it on their Credit Card - and I know how much she really enjoyed her own Cake so I'd also be buying it for her as much as for me - which would obviously make me happy ... I've just got to try and decide what kind to go for? ... Hmmm? ...

I've just been told by Mum that I'm going to be having a Chocolate Cake - LOL!!! ;o>
At least the choice of Chocolate can be mine?! - but Chocolate Cake it is then!

Hope you have a lovely day sweety!

What a wonderful thing to wake up to! ... although I'm not too sure about letting in the Chippendale that Duke has sent me?!! - LOL!!! ;o>
Good friends and good wishes - what more could I want or ever ask for?!! ... thank you!!! ... x x x

It's been such a funny few days here? ... I've gone from not wanting to even think about today or make any kind of special plans or a big deal of it all the way to now saying ... "WOO-HOO!!! - bring it on!!!" ... LOL!!!

Apparently my favourite Florist actually rang my Mum up early on yesterday, reminded her that he was sort-of open now (Home Deliveries while the Shop still stays shut), and asked her if she wanted him to make me up a Birthday Bouquet in all of my favourite colours as he was about to go off to the Flower Market and pick up his Stock for the next few days?!! ;oO
How incredibly kind and thoughtful is that? - him realising and understanding that my Mum might possibly not remember or quite know what to do about trying to order in some Flowers for me?!!
This meant my Mum came bursting into my Bedroom first thing this morning, all thrilled and excited, with a massive Bouquet that had just been delivered ... and I've got all of my most favourite citrussy sunshiney colours put together in Sunflowers, Irises, Roses, and so much more!!! John knows me SO well! - LOL!!! - he's even remembered me saying to him a few months ago how much I like Blue Hobbits too! ;o>
I do have a Cake coming sometime later on today ... but I just want to publicly thank a very dear friend for so generously and kindly sending me an absolutely and utterly amazing Apple Crumble Cake through the Post the other day! - just in case I did decide not to go ahead with bothering to order one in for myself ... I really am blessed with such lovely and incredibly caring Forum friends ... bless you all ... x x x

Here's a birthday cookie especially for you - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ETjYzUx...

Well, the fun and the thrills couldn't last too long in this House, could they? ... first off my Mum grabbed at some of my Envelopes this Morning before I could stop her (she has developed a restless fidgety and nervous busy-busy-busy kind of a mind-set these days and often does things completely on automatic pilot without being fully aware or thinking through as to what she is doing) and managed to accidentally rip up two of the Birthday Cards that had been so kindly sent to me by our Neighbours.
So? - instead of having a lovely long leisurely Brunch together - we've spent almost an hour just in laying out all of the pieces like Jigsaws and using lots of bits of Sellotape to put them all back together again - as I hadn't even opened them yet! - LOL!!! ;o>
Then I went out to the Garage to put the Washer on and found it almost halfway through washing a Heavy Cotton Towel Wash - but set to doing it on a Silk Wash Cycle instead - without any Washing Powder.
And then, to cap it all, I discovered that my Dad who is obsessed with switching off (and even unplugging) the Washer and the Tumble Dryer overnight (in case of a Fire?) had also decided to switch off and unplug the new Freezer as well at some point! ... ARRRGGGHHH!!! ... NOOOOOOO!!! ;oO
Thankfully it hasn't got all that much in it at the moment and everything still miraculously feels ice-cold and frozen hard to the touch so I'm thinking that we may just have got away with it?!
It would seem that he probably did it first thing this morning (although I can't be sure because he is adamant that it's got nothing to do with him and my Mum must have done it at the same time that I know she was still in Bed fast asleep!) and so it can only have been like this for around about 6 hours before I realised that it was off - because if he had done it last night then everything would surely be completely defrosted and ruined by now?
I came back in again to find my Cake had arrived and Mum already had the Lid off and was well into tearing that up too for Paper Waste! - so I've just had to improvise on making a cover for it out of over half a roll of Cling Film to keep it fresh and also keep any Flies off it ... and I was just about to finally get to sit down to my first (still hot and complete) Mug of Tea of the day when one of our Neighbours turned up with a huge bag of Potatoes and a 24 pack of Toilet Rolls?!! ... because my Dad had answered the Phone to her early on this Morning and told we were in urgent need of them?!!
He is also adamant on this that he did no such thing and again, has been blaming my poor Mum who got herself all upset over struggling to try to remember something that she clearly hasn't done! ... and I've absolutely no idea as to where on Earth I'm now going to put them ... as we already have an unopened 5kg bag of Potatoes taking up space in our tiny Kitchen and a whole Bathroom cupboard that is completely jammed packed full of both Toilet and Kitchen Rolls! ;oO
It's clearly just going to be one of those days today!!! - but nevertheless it is still my Birthday and I'm still smiling!!! - LOL!!! ;o>
As you've got space in your freezer, I would suggest making up a few batches of mashed potato and then freezing it.
Get your dad to do the peeling and mashing as punishment, but tell him he is being helpful :)

The Binmen honk their Van Horn every time they empty our Bins now and I've noticed my Mum gets all flustered while waiting on the other side of the Gate for them to leave so that she can fetch them back in. She was waving like the Queen at them today! - so I think the Stickers will very likely be staying on the Bins now ;o>
