Martin O' | 2196 comments What rattles me is Team GB scraped through with the princely sum of 1 Gold and 4 Bronze which very minor achievement is lauded with stomach churning praise by the British Commentators with sycophantic hyperinflated gusto ad nauseam. The rest of the competitors and countries where virtually ignored, completely unbalanced in my opinion. Respect to the womens bob sleigh team, with no support or funding from the Olympics Association, as for the rest they should feel nothing but shame for taking the money and producing such pitiful results.
Moving on, has anybody noticed that fruit cordial is mostly "no sugar added" as are a lot of supermarket brand fizzy drinks? I assume that this is due in no small part to the future introduction of the sugar tax under the guise of promoting a healthier lifestyle. Irn Bru recently announced they were going to reduce the amount of sugar in its product. The healthy option in many foods and drinks tastes vile and should be relegated to the depths of hell. I didn't understand the point of non-alchoholic beers either. There are plenty of non-alchoholic alternatives if one wishes to stay sober, surely the main attraction of beer, wine and spirits is to avhieve some level of inebriation.

Lez | 7490 comments Regarding sugar reduction, at present I’m attending physio clinics at the hospital. Before we start we’re offered tea etc. and on the table is a small tray stacked with packs of 3 custard creams, bourbon bikkies, shortcake bikkies, madeira cake and lemon drizzle cake. A mid-morning trolley has Kit-Kats, Penguin bikkies and as a concession to healthy eating, one apple and a banana.
I’m working on a strongly-worded letter!

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well, I obviously spoke too soon of Spring days as we are now all bracing ourselves for a week of heavy snowfall across the UK! ;o>

We have already had a few fleeting moments of soft fluffy Snow wisps being playfully blown around and about on a light breeze here which immediately melted on making contact with the ground.

The heavy stuff for us 'oop North' is predicted to start falling on Wednesday night and the worse times for venturing out to be from Thursday afternoon through to Saturday ... and, of course, this would also be the week that I have got a very much-needed Hair Appointment that has been booked in for 2pm on Thursday afternoon and is right the way over on the other side of Stockport ... (*sigh*)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well my Hair Appointment has been cancelled ;o< ... it's blowing up such a huge white-out Snow Blizzard out there at the moment that I can't see our Car on the Driveway ... in fact, I can't even see our Driveway anymore either?!! ;oO

We were due to have an Online Shopping Delivery coming today and they haven't sent an Email or Text to cancel it but I'm not expecting for them to try to deliver to us all the same. It's a bit of pain because we have no Butter and only have a couple of days worth of Milk in but we'll still get by and so it's not really a big deal.

The Bin Men have not been collecting the Wheelie Bins across the entire Stockport Borough for a couple of days now and, according to the Council Website, they have been redeployed to shovelling Snow and gritting Roads duties instead which comes as rather surprising news to us Stopfordians.

Despite just about everyone in the UK knowing for well over a week that this terrible Weather was on it's way, there has been no noticeable attempts at all to clear any Snow anywhere and, even more incredibly, absolutely no sign of any Grit either - and there are many Main as well as Side Roads here that are currently quite impossible to use.

I hope that everyone manages to keep warm and stay safe until this extreme Weather blows over. I saw that Scotland was issued with it's first ever Red Alert Weather Warning on Wednesday in advance of this hitting Scotland very hard over the next few days - and I know that a fair few of our regular Music Forum members will be at risk of being badly affected by this.

And I hope too that Granny also got her much-needed Chocolate supplies in?

message 614: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Looks like it will be with us until next week Suzy, Monday sees a slight rise in temperature to just above freezing and some rain, even then I should imagine the snow and ice will be around for a good bit longer before we get around to some serious thawing. Hope you get some supplies arriving soon, fortunately we have a small corner shop a stone's throw from the front door and our council seems to be keeping main roads fairly clear. As I said the other day Northamptonshire manages to escape the worst of it weather wise, I suppose being situated well inland helps.

Suzy - if you haven't already done so I suggest you turn the water supply to the washing machine off before it thaws out in case the expanded ice has split the hoses.

The weather over here in France just did a lightning u-turn and went from -9 degrees C yesterday to 14 degrees C today. The snow over here missed us as well which is good. We got out of England just in time:-)

message 616: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments We usually remember to turn the Water Supply off when the Washer is not in use and the Weather turns bad like this - but it was still working fine yesterday when I put a load of Dog Towels in ... and then 'someone' must have forgotten to turn it off again afterwards?! ... (*tries not to look so guilty but manages to fail miserably*) ... !

I have turned it Off now but we have such Low Water Pressure here that my Dad says it will be fine to just leave it be. The Garage is not attached to House so the Pipes run underneath the Patio and out to it - and we have this happen almost every Winter.

It should be useable again in a day or two and thankfully I always like to keep the Laundry up-to-date so it should be a few days before we might get to really need it again ;o>

First time using Iceland for a Home Delivery and I've only just discovered that the Reviews online for their Delivery Service are unfortunately quite appalling! ;o<

It was due between 1 and 3pm and I honestly thought it might be cancelled and wouldn't have blamed them at all for doing so either. 3pm came and went and I had heard nothing more and was thinking when it got to 4pm that it most definitely was not going to be coming.

However, at 20 past 4, a rather grumpy little man turned up on my Doorstep and ... joy of joys! ... all of my Order was handed over with nothing at all missing from it! He said that he was having a terrible day today and he didn't say anything about it being an hour and a half late by then - but I obviously didn't take his grumpiness personally in any way as I wouldn't want his Job for all the Tea in China on a day like this one. I felt rather sorry for him and am very thankful indeed that he got my Delivery through.

We now have Butter, extra Milk, fresh Bread and Fruit, and a large supply of frozen Veg to see us through to next week - YAYYY!!! ;o>

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments We've had a serious problem at work for months with most of the rooms being much too hot. Today, everywhere was freezing. But estates won't do anything until someone provides them with exact temperatures for each room, not allowing for the fact that some rooms have a 5-6°C difference between one side of the room and the other.

Martin O' | 2196 comments Suzy, We have used Iceland's delivery service for many years now and have never had cause to complain, although I can't vouch for any of their other stores across the country. Sometimes this service is unavailable due to weather or high demand but its handy for bulky and heavier items and their prices are reasonable, What I do find fault with is they have replaced a lot of their products with new ones and the quality has gone downhill quite badly. Still they have got their uses and the only other supermarket in the town centre is Sainsbury's. Asda, Tesco and others are further out and as I don't drive are difficult to get to.

message 621: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments That's good to hear about Iceland Deliveries, Martin ;o>

I usually Google for Reviews across the Internet on Items I am interested in buying but I have never done it for a Home Delivery Service before. It was only because I was getting bored with waiting and wondering that I took a look and then I immediately regretted doing so - LOL!!! ;o>

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www....

And I usually get to need to use an Online Delivery every few months, have always used Morrisons or Tesco, and have found each of their Delivery Services to be extremely efficient, accurate and informative, and excellent every time.

A Text or Email saying Iceland would be delayed would have made a huge difference to my impression of using them today however it won't put me off from using them again in future.

I went with Iceland because I've not been feeling well for a few months and have got a bit fed-up with all of the usual Meals we tend to eat. My M&D can be very repetitive on their liking most days for some kind of Meat served up with 3 to 4 plain Steamed Veg and Gravy.

I like a good Stir Fry but they prefer plainer Food and I wanted to make life easier on myself until I feel more up to taking over the cooking again. Iceland had a very nice range of 'Meal In A Bag' options and so I decided to buy one of each one I fancied for the Freezer so that I have some quick and easy options available to me on my Meals.

The few very small Iceland Stores that we have around Stockport are miles away from our House and I don't drive either. Getting them delivered still Frozen to your Doorstep makes very good sense to me - plus I definitely did not want to ask my Mum to try to brave the Snow and Ice with a Shopping List for a Store that we rarely ever tend to go in.

I found a lot of things very well-priced but was a little disappointed at the lack of overall Stock that they had available on quite a few Items. They run on a much smaller scale though to the leading Supermarkets and so having less choice and variety is only to be expected.

I think I shall be trying out some of the 'Iceland Meal in a Bag Oriental Chicken Noodles Stir Fry' for my Lunch tomorrow? ... or should I try out the 'Iceland Meal in a Bag Chicken and Prawn Paella' instead? ... Mmmm? - or perhaps the 'Iceland Meal in a Bag Salmon, Broccoli & Pea Risotto' ... ? ... ;o>

Granny | 93 comments Please be safe over there. I saw news articles about the swanky new plows/gritters deployed over there. I hope your streets get cleared soon. For us here in Wisconsin, the snow would be a minor inconvenience. Our plows get the main roads done first then go to secondary roads to get school buses through. Clothes washers/dryers are in the house. Water lines are insulated, sewer lines are run below the frost line.
Suzy, I have some Hershey chocolate. 😊

It also came top with ‘Which?’ I tried them once last year when I ran out of a few things and found they’d less stock than a Tesco Express with no fresh bread, no low-fat spread, no large eggs etc. Their own brand frozen stuff is excellent and great value but I really don’t eat much processed food.

message 631: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Mar 02, 2018 04:44AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh brilliant - that's really good to know, Lez Lee ;o>

My Mum decided to move her Car today. I've no idea why, but anyway, she backed it half-way out the Driveway and then it stalled and wouldn't restart - and because it was sticking out across the Pavement and almost onto our Road she asked my Dad to come out and check it over so that she could get it going again and move it back to where it was before(!)

My Dad went out and said that it needed a Jump Start but then he went and slipped and fell over and couldn't get himself up again. I got my Coat and Shoes on and managed to go out on my Crutches but, because he is rather a heavy man, there was just no way of Mum and me managing to lift him up.

A Neighbour came hurrying over to help but we were still stuck. Then I had an idea - and between us we carefully rolled him over onto the little hairy woofer's spare Duvet and we dragged him across the Snow-covered Driveway and into the Garage as we wouldn't have got him through the Porch Doors.

Another Neighbour also came over with his two Adult Sons and between them all they finally got my Dad up again - and, thankfully, he appears to be unharmed and is now resting up in front of the TV.

The Doctor is going to bob over to check him out in the next hour though, as with having a Heart condition that has him constantly in AF, and having had several Strokes, plus the two replaced Hips, a failing Knee Joint that is due to be replaced, and being on Warfarin as well, we daren't assume that he really is okay just because he says so and seems to be.

message 632: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well, how's that for NHS service and the incredible kindness of strangers?!! ;o>

The Doctor, who chose to walk up from our nearby Surgery, was not one that we have seen before. He was very kind and very thorough and checked every inch of my Dad for any visible signs of Injury or Bruising and seems to be satisfied with him. However my Dad has obviously scared himself, both by falling and in not being able to get himself back up again unaided, and his usual level of AF has upped itself and gone into overdrive accordingly.

It has been decided that he should go into A&E just to be monitored for a few hours as a precaution - and so the Dr walked back up to the Surgery to get his own Car, drove back, and he has just taken my Dad (with my Mum) to our local Hospital ... and he has also insisted that they call him and he will pick them up and bring them back home again if they can't manage to get a Taxi back tonight!

Our Neighbour's Sons have also managed to get Mum's Car back onto the Driveway again and are currently taking a good look under the Bonnet to see if there is anything obvious wrong with it ;o>

message 633: by P (new)

P Cobb | 580 comments Amazing neighbourliness and doctorliness, Suzy. Now, outside our's earlier, there was nearly a brawl over vehicles dumped half on pavements blocking the road, who should and who shouldn't move their car to allow others to park etc etc. Once the 'effing' and 'jeffing' started, I decided ours was staying firmly put and I walked down to the nearest shps to get a couple of things before it went into a white out this afternoon. Hours of non-stop snow covered our road and not one vehicle apparently tried driving either up or down so looks like we are waiting for a rise from our -5/6 (feeling like -12) and a thaw. My word but it's brass monkeys. Don't know where the birdies are sheltering. The Beast from the East has collided with Storm Emma from the South, seemingly right over our house, and it's bliddy chilly. Other areas of midlands and Wales have received more snowfall, though.

Good news stories are always the best ones! I'm glad to hear that, once again, bad circumstances are able to bring out the best in folk.

I hope all of you in the northern hemisphere are keeping safe, well insulated and with stocked larders. And hopefully you don't have to go out in dangerous weather. Take care!

message 635: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments The Hospital kept my Dad in until 7pm and one of our lovely Neighbours insisted on going in his Car to fetch M&D home again

In the meantime, I wrapped up well, and successfully managed to clear a path from the Back Door to the Garage and down the Patio steps to the Garden - so that we can now get out to the Garage where the Freezer, Washer and Tumble Dryer are and let the little hairy woofers onto the Lawn much more safely now. I wasn't sure if I had it in me but not being able to forget looking out and seeing my Dad just lying there in Snow spurred me on.

The Neighbour's Sons say that they think it is the Spark Plugs on my Mum's Car that have flooded due to the cold weather? - and they rang a friend of theirs who is an experienced Car Mechanic and he is going to come around this afternoon and take a look. He turns out he only lives a few Roads away and so he should be able to get here reasonably easily.

I'm SO glad that all the extra Shopping managed to get delivered now! I made Bacon Butties for everyone yesterday as a warming thank you for the Neighbours while we waited for the Dr to come - and then he had one as well after checking out my Dad.

I've been reliably informed by the Neighbour's Sons that their Car Mechanic friend is very partial to a Sausage & Egg Barm and so I have got everything out and set up ready for when he arrives!!! ;o>

WoW?!! - we reckon we have got off very lightly here compared to the rest of the country and it certainly does sound like it on hearing how it is where you are, P! ;oO

Our biggest problem has been the distinct lack of any Grit being put down on the Main Roads until after we had already been pretty much snowbound for 3 days - and by then the Snow had compressed on the Roads and Pavements into being several inches of solid Ice.

We have so many Birds in our Back Gardens round here right now that it is a pretty much full time job in itself, what with continually checking and putting more Food out, and repeatedly breaking up the Ice and refilling the Birdbath every couple of hours with warmish water for them ;o>

Why do French language lessons never teach you the sort of sentences you really need to know. For example, when you're driving down the road back to the house and you meet your French near neighbours three escaped goats walking up the road you need to be able to say "Excusez-moi, savez-vous que vos chèvres se sont échappées?" but they just don't teach you things like that
