Val H. | 22162 comments Our department of social security (or human services as they now call themselves) also wants to know exactly what you have: boats - none; holiday home - none; greyhounds - none; caravan - none. You are assessed by one of two tests - income or assets. In other words, if they don't get you coming, they get you going. They also apply "deeming" interest rates to any moneys you might have and usually the rate is much higher than any you might be offered by any financial institution. As far as I can see there are only two hidey-holes that they don't ask you about: stick it on a credit card so your credit card always has a plus balance or open a gambling account and use that as your personal ATM. The biggest sports betting agency in Australia was owned by the respective state governments up until 1994 so they are universally available at nearly every pub or club. Forget on-line, make your deposits and withdrawals over the bar! needless to say I haven't tried either method.

We did have a PM (Malcolm Fraser) back in the '80s who, in an election campaign, famously said that if Labor got in, "people would be better off keeping their money under the bed". Plus ça change, ........

theDuke | 6495 comments I've just an article about the world's tallest teenager..and guess where he's from?

Yip...Wales! 16 years old...now living in Michigan but plays for Wales international Basketball team (what else could it be?!)..he's 7'4" tall and still growing. He's only 3 inches shorter than UK's current tallest man...so we might have new one in a coupla years time! Brandon Marshall is his name.

I was not a short boy, by any defination...and was taller than most of my teachers at my primary school by the age of 11....but got my growth spurt during my teens. But i think girls generally physically grow up sooner than boys anyway. So had i been in your class Lez...you may well have been taller than i, for a few years anyway! :)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments Greyhounds? ... WoW?!! ;o>

I wonder what would happen if folk over here in the North West of England were asked about their ownership of potential money-makers such as Greyhounds ... and Bulldogs, Whippets, Ferrets, and Racing Pigeons?!!

I saw a guy very recently on Facebook who was offering up 13 Bulldog Pups for sale (to known and trusted family and friends only) for £1,500 each! There's apparently very BIG money to be made through the breeding of Pedigree Dogs.

Greyhounds?! Does Australia have a large greyhound racing fraternity Val?!

Lez | 7490 comments I get the impression the Aussies have a racing fraternity for anything that moves - 'roos, possums, wombats etc !

I'd love to see a Tazmanian Devil race, Lez!! ;-)

It'll be very violent, i shouldn't wonder!

Val H. | 22162 comments Australians do have a reputation for betting on two flies crawling up a wall but I don't really know if we gamble more or less than other nations. And the population percentage of greyhound owners may be no more than average either. The late D up our street used to have two. I've never been to the dogs but I've always fancied having a retired or failed greyhound as a pet.

I just checked the TAB betting site and there are 12 greyhound meets around Australia today available to bet on, plus 2 in the UK, 2 in NZ and 1 in America. So maybe we do have more opportunity for dog racing.

Dog breeding is also lucrative here. French Bulldogs seem the fashionable pet of the moment. Anything from £3000 - £4000 for one of them. I don't know how you'd get that income past the snoops though because you'd have to be a registered business I would think in order to have the pedigree registered.

A late lunch (late home again) of cheese and tuna melt in a half ciabatta.
Best be getting off to bed in a minute - one more shift to go, which will have to be short to keep me within the 60 hour weekly limit :)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments Advice from The Blue Cross on how to keep Cats cool in a Heatwave ...

Drain the Springwater off a Tin of Tuna and add roundabout the same amount in Tap Water to it. Stir, then pour it all into an Ice Lolly Mould (or two), and pop in the Freezer ... TA-DAAA!!! ... a yummy Fish flavoured Ice Lolly that you can hold the Stick of in your Hand while your Cat gets to rehydrate and cool down by sucking and nibbling on it! ;o>

Tea of grilled sardines & salad here. Elder little miss had mushrooms, courgettes & spinach, and then completely destroyed the illusion of virtue by having a vegan Magnum.

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments I'm not keen on Sardines - I've always found them to be more bony than Pilchards and the Bones much more awkward and difficult to deal with.

I absolutely love these though - and, coincidentally, I had some on a couple of rounds of lightly buttered Wholemeal Toast for my Tea last night ;o> ...

message 5384: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments I always mash up my Pilchards before spreading them on my Toast.

Yes, it looks awful but it evenly blends in the Tomato Sauce and helps them to spread better ... and tinned Pilchards don't particularly look very nice anyway, do they? ... it's the taste that is all that matters with Pilchards and they taste yummy to me ;o>

message 5385: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Sild were always popular in Liverpool. I always thought they were small sardines but I've just discovered they belong to the herring family. Anyway they're not as strong tasting as sardines or pilchards and you can just squash the bones into a paste to spread on toast.

Val H. | 22162 comments I have sardines in springwater nearly every day for my lunch. Can't get enough of them - and especially the bones!! I'm very aware of my calcium intake and eat a lot of tinned (and fresh) salmon too (love the crunchy bones in the tinned variety). I also use tahini rather than butter or magarine.

I've never heard of sild.

message 5387: by Gordon (new)

message 5399: by [deleted user] (new)

Dinner today was burger and chips - no mayo or salad cream :)

The only time I use mayo is when making a sauce to go on prawns - equal measures of salad cream and mayo, with tomato ketchup to add colour and a good grind of pepper and a sprinkling of paprika once the sauce has been poured over the prawns.

It's your 78th Birthday, Dad - and you WILL have a happy one whether you like or not!!! ;o>
