I don't because I can't manage to eat a whole Fish Fillet Butty and Beans - I don't like feeling too full afterwards.

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments It never ceases to amaze and often thrill me as to what you can manage to find and buy online in this day and age - LOL!!!

I think eBay looks like your best bet on getting more Shoes for less money than Amazon does - but I still use Amazon to check out the Reviews.

I grew up with hand-me-downs and things like these could only come free from a friend, cheap from a local Jumble Sale if you were lucky, or very expensively from the few Toy Shops to be found in the bigger Towns.

If eBay and Amazon had been around when I was a child then my meagre Pocket Money would have gone SO much further than it ever did to buy any treats and gifts with and probably been spent on far better quality things as well.

We could only buy what was there in front of us at our local Corner Shop - and sadly the price was always high and the quality of things like these back then was often pretty poor.

Baked beans..with fish fingers..in a sandwich?!

Be a bit messy, wouldn't it?

Well.....i made one.....fried 4 fishy fingers in butter, then put them in 2 slices of farmhouse granary, then stuck it under the grill to toast the bread up. After that was done....put a coupla leafs of Cos lettuce in....a big dollop of tartare sauce...and a sprinkle of crack black pepper.....and the result was....

.......dry!

Just tasted like fish in more bread, with a hint of tartare and pepper!

Tis nothin' special....but me tummy is happy...for now!

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments Fried them in Butter? - that's a blast from the very long distant past for me - LOL!!!

I always bake our Fish in Oven straight from the Freezer and dry-fry other things like Bacon or Burgers in a Non-Stick Pan - and, because I've been doing it all of my life, it never occurs to me that there are any other ways to cook now ;o>

theDuke | 6495 comments I don't use anything else for shallow frying Suzy.....i just use butter or Olive oil..sometimes both. Haven't used lard, veg, sunseed..or any other oil in years....don't like greasiness of it.

Never heard of dry frying though...surely that would knacker the frying pan..wouldn't it? Mum always insists to put oil in the pan, before heating up the pan....to protect it from warping.

That said..she was a war baby......i dare say frying pan technology has moved on a bit, since she was taught that by her Mum!

Funny how old habits continue..even when they're redundant!

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments Things certainly have moved on - and proper decent quality Non-Stick Pans can cost next to nothing these days if you take a little time to shop around for them. I have several different sizes of Pans including a couple of these Scoville Neverstick Pans from Asda that I absolutely love using ...

... https://direct.asda.com/george/home/p...

Although many Pan Brands claim that you don't need to use any Oil - I prefer to dry-fry by just pouring about a teaspoonful of Sunflower Oil into the Pan first and then wiping it all around the Pan with a piece of Kitchen Tissue so that it only has an extremely light coating of Oil on it's surface before it goes onto the Hob.

Then I cook using a Lid some of time which helps to keep the temperature up and to steam slightly as well as to fry so things cook more quickly and evenly on both sides and more in their own juices rather than in a pool of Fat.

This is the Tesco Frozen Chunky Fillets of Breaded Fish that I buy ...

... and then bake on a Baking Tray in the Oven (200 degrees for around 25 minutes from Frozen) are usually very moist and extremely tasty ... I can't abide greasy or overcooked dry and chewy Fish ... (*shudder*)

Derek W | 1366 comments Unfortunately. to do that I'd have to find it again, which could be tricky since I drove down to the lake in the village and released it into the wild after I'd fished it out of swimming pool this morning.

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments ERRR? - sort-of, Derek, although you do have me rather intrigued now as to why you are asking?! Have you got an unexpected House Guest?!! ;o>

A basic difference is that Toads tend to be dry in appearance and look like they have bad Acne with their crusty lumpy-looking Skin texture - whereas Frogs usually look far more wet and sticky and have a smoother-looking Skin on the whole.

Toads will turn up all over the Garden but Frogs tend to be found in the much damper places ... ohhh, and Toads like to waddle and crawl slowly and Frogs prefer to suddenly hop and jump around on their Legs.

Be very careful with Rig too if you have a Toad and he tries to check it out by getting too close to it. Frogs seem to be okay? - but Toads can have a very poisonous venom that they exude and an over-curious Pet can get very sick from getting too close and may need Vet Treatment. I don't think that it would ever prove fatal? - but I know it can act like a severe irritant that can last up to a couple of days.

One of our previous pair of little hairy woofers, Bethany, twice needed to have her Eyes flushing out with lots of warm Water as her Face suddenly swelled up and she suffered what seemed to be a very unpleasant sore and itchy reaction to trying to sniff at Toads that we came across in the Back Garden!

Yeah, those dinky little Pans suddenly turned up everywhere in the UK about 10 years ago and were selling like 'hotcakes' in places like the Poundshops, Home Bargains, and B&M. They were sold as a novelty as much as anything as some of them are shaped or have got a shaped lining - such as a heart shape - but actually, novelty value aside, if you are single and just cooking for one person they are rather handy.

They take up less space in the Cupboard and on the Hob, far less energy and time to heat up to cook with, and there's also less of a Pan and it's resultant mess to have to clean up afterwards. And a lot of folk, such as the elderly and the disabled, really like having the option of owning much smaller and lighter Pans because they can lift them more easily and manage them better.

They also improve presentation as they work well at containing the Egg so it comes out in a much neater and tidier (and sometimes fun) shape - instead of needing to use more Oil in a large heavy family-sized Frying Pan to cook just the one Egg and having it all spread out across the Pan ;o>

I have one small Scoville Frying Pan (see my Pan Post above) that I regularly use as it just about holds 4 small medallions of Bacon, or 2 to 3 Burgers - and it isn't too heavy or awkward for me to manage and so that makes it to be ideal for my everyday use. And I also have a couple of larger Pans too for the cooking of mainly one Pan family meals involving lots of Ingredients - like when I fry off Onions, Peppers, etc, before adding a pack of Mince and a pint of Stock or a Sauce ;o>

Martin O' | 2196 comments Iceland were selling those small frying pans for pancake day this year, used it once then relegated to the back of the cupboard. Abso-blinking-lutely useless!
Recently decided to replace chip pan with one of those newfangled air fryers, really pleased with results and so easy to clean. Brilliant!

message 5085: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments Which Frying Pans? - do you mean the dinky novelty-shaped ones, Martin?

I bought our neighbour one from Home Bargains (£2.50) a couple of years ago - but I didn't hold out much hope for it as it was only a thin'ish tinny type of one and when it didn't do the job properly as a Non-Stick I returned it.

Then a few weeks later I saw another similar one at Poundland (for a £1 ;o>) and it was an even smaller but much sturdier Pan of a far better quality and finish. I bought it not expecting that much of it but he uses it several times a week and finds it ideal for his needs - so there are some good 'uns to be found out there even though they are still much more of a novelty item.

message 5086: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments No Suzy, just the regular round one two to three inches diameter with what was supposed to be non-stick coating which failed miserably.

message 5087: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Jun 28, 2019 04:21AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments About 30 years ago I was tempted into buying a lovely looking Non-Stick Pan. It was surprisingly lightweight but nevertheless it had such a smooth glossy glittery finish and really looked the business - and it came from a rather posh Kitchen Equipment Shop and so, even though it was on a special offer, it still cost me a lot more than the average Frying Pan.

I couldn't wait to try it out and, when I took all the Labels off and washed it, the Water just slid off it and I barely needed to dry it off - and I honestly just can't even begin to tell you how ridiculously pleased I was with it!

I broke about 9 Eggs into a Jug and then spent ages prepping lots of yummy Ingredients all ready to make up a huge Omelette for us all ... very lightly oiled the Pan (even though it wasn't supposed to be necessary) and started cooking ... and in only a few minutes a fantastic-looking Omelette was already starting to come together beautifully.

I'd used a good grind of Black Pepper so I wasn't at all bothered by any tiny flecks of black that were in the mix - although I was a little surprised at how many there were? - as I didn't think that I'd been all that excessive. Then I tried gently lifting it around the edges and ... found it was virtually welded to the Pan and wasn't budging! In a panic I took it off the Stove still only half cooked and got out a wooden Spatula (so as not to damage the Non-Stick) coating and managed to prise the underneath of the Omelette away from the Pan as gently and as carefully as I possibly could. Then even though it was still raw on top I grabbed a Plate and flipped it out onto it ... and the whole of the bottom of the Pan came away with the Omelette!!!

I actually stood there in complete shock and disbelief holding my precious new, now NON Non-Stick Pan up and shouting "NO?!-NO?!!-NO?!!" until M&D raced in wondering what on Earth was going on!!!

I took it straight back to the Shop the very next day and got my money back on it ... but I was left so 'traumatised' by the whole experience that it was several years before I would allow myself to be persuaded by M&D to trust in another Non-Stick Pan and get back to making us all Omelettes again! - LOL!!! ;o>

message 5088: by [deleted user] (new)

A nine egg omelette??

I'd struggle to finish that :)

I use a ceramic frying pan for omelettes with no problems but fried eggs can stick if I'm not careful or keeping an eye on them :)

I also have a good set of cast iron pans which I use for searing and cooking steaks. Sausages, bacon and burgers all go in the oven in a tin with a rack so the excess fat drips away.

message 5089: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments Damn! ... I've spent a very hopeful hour researching into and looking at Pet Cooling Mats and was very impressed and keen at first - but there are SO many Reviews all saying the same thing about their little furry friends only having to stand on them for them to suddenly tear open and leak Gel everywhere including all over their Pet! ;oO

They sounded to be SO amazing on all of their 5 Star Reviews but I don't feel I can risk trying them out if they really are so fragile a fabric construction that just a Pet standing on them can sometimes cause them to rip and burst open ;o<

Nah...i'm outside..still doing the cladding.....and correcting a wee mistake with that first bit i did 18 months ago. Turned out, having done a lovely job on the right side of the front aspect.....the left side wasn't looking quite right somehow.

After some head scratching..i decided to count the number of boards on each side....the new bit has 22 boards...the other side has......21 boards....ah bugger!

Turned out..i hadn't pushed the tongues in the grooves for some inexplicable reason! Certainly explains why the boards warp outwards during the hotter months.....cos they weren't locked in were they?! Duhhhh!

Just as well, as i need to move them anyway..as i'm moving up the red window up by 2 inches as well. I never seem to be able to do a job once.....i have to fiddle with things until i'm happy with it! Kinda explains why it takes me so fecking long to get anything done! Ya wouldn't want to employ me for odd jobs ..i'd be worse than a builder's estimate of completion...by some margin!!! lol!

Perfectionism ya see.....never happy with anything i do!

Pain in the bloody arse, i tells ya!

suzysunshine7 | 16052 comments Seriously though, Duke, I'm such a great believer in ... "if something is worth doing - then it's worth doing well" ... and I also believe that it's as much about the doing of something, the learning and all of the experiences gained, the whole journey to get there on these kinds of self-created projects that actually matters the most and is the most satisfying and rewarding.

I felt exactly the same when I was almost killing myself at times in creating a lovely Home out of a tiny empty Housing Association Flat for my friend - while he chose to just sit there or sleep through most of every day and do next to nothing about anything except to endlessly criticise, moan, and complain about everyone and everything.

Things HAD to be done by someone and no-one else was doing anything - Furniture and Furnishings had to be sourced and to be paid for, then put together and fitted in - and there was all of the cleaning and the 'creative renovation' I had to do on a absolutely disgustingly filthy and badly damaged Kitchen area that should have been ripped and replaced - but the Housing Association kept on promising and prevaricating and never made happen.

No-one else was ever doing anything? - so I ended up in doing the lot. And I had to learn how to do things like fill in holes as big as my Fists (with black fluffy Mould growing out of them!) in the Walls around Door Frames as I went along. And scrub layer after layer of many years worth of Nicotine and even Drug Residue off all the Kitchen Units and improvise on sealing in the Plaster of Walls behind them with cut-to-size pieces of Sticky Back Plastic for health and safety reasons. It pretty much almost finished me some days, with pain levels going off the scale and almost beyond all endurance - but I was and still am SO incredibly proud of myself for taking it all on and for seeing it through. I'm extremely proud to also be a perfectionist in everything that I decide to put my Mind to as well ;o>

You and me have far more time on our Hands (with not being able to do paid work due to our severe and restrictive level of disabilities) and I think that filling our time with such plans, goals, and achievements that inspire and motivate us to keep interested and active - even if it is often in such an incredibly challenging, painful, and frustratingly limited way - is still key to leading a worthwhile, meaningful and productive Life.

Now you get out there, Kid, and make that Man Cave into the very best Man Cave ever!!! ;o>
