Namba (Yasuko) [real person] & Naoko Mori [actress who played her in the movie.]The 2nd woman (& the oldest) to complete the 'seven summits' challenge, after reaching the summit of Everest on May 11th 1996. But, whilst descending, she tragically lost her life along with 7 others during a white out, in the infamous disastrous expedition of that year. At the time, the total Everest fatalities for the season (12), made it the worst in history. However, the avalanche disasters of the 2014 & 2015 seasons had since placed it third. Continue reading though, as there is an interesting if sombre connection....
Fact: The smash hit 2015 biographical movie Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin & Emily Watson & Keira Knightly & others, was partly shot on site at Everest, the rest at Pinewood. Ironically and even more tragically, on 18th April 2014, whilst a second unit crew was shooting the remaining scenes of the film at Camp II on Everest, an avalanche triggered, that killed 16 Sherpa guides who were carrying equipment for the crew. The film crew survived but only just..thus the aborted 2014 season became the worst for fatalities on that mountain that year. Until the following season, when an earthquake struck that caused yet another avalanche that blew into a base camp, sweeping the camp tents across a glacier and over an ice cliff. The total cull that time was a further 22 lives & injured dozens more that year. Many of those at the camp then, were returnees from the previous aborted season, some of which tragically lost their lives whilst they laid asleep in their tents.
If ever there were a message that perhaps some places are best left alone...erm...maybe future mountaineers could take that as a hint?! Mibbe?! It's not a very stable area is it?!
Sorry!
