On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure and to live a lifetime in a single day.

Natalie/Elizabeth, sorry I’m late getting to this. Rufus and Matteo have both received their phone call-it’s an interesting idea. The idea of a blog for people counting down their final day is slightly macabre.

End of part one. Clearly setting up the concept. Rufus and Mateo are quite different in manner, but I wonder how this system would work practically.

End of part two. Really lovely section to help us learn about Mateo and Rufus. Watching their final day like this feels somewhat callous. Can’t help but wonder just who/what will ultimately end each of their lives.

I like both MC’s and the fact that they have very distinct voices but I’m not entirely attached to them yet. Also planet sounds? YES, SO COOL. The creeps on the Last Friend app… so creepy. Part One (view spoiler)[ So far I'm liking the characters, especially Mateo. I like that he has a sense of humor, but is also taking his death pretty seriously and actually wants to make this last day worth while. Then there's Rufus. I feel like we didn't get a sense of his personality yet, and I don't really know how to feel about him. I do like how they are building the Decker world so far, but I hope we get more info on how Death-Cast knows someone is going to die (hide spoiler)]
Part Two (view spoiler)[ This book just really makes you think. Do I have any regrets? Would I try new things on my last day, or surround myself with familiar things that make me happy? Would I want to know if I was dying within the next 24 hours? This book is really good at making you think. (hide spoiler)]
Part Three (view spoiler)[ I hope Rufus gets a chance to see his family one last time before Peck gets to him. I'm really glad that Mateo gets to see Lidia at least one more time, because honestly I felt like him saying goodbye like that to her in the beginning wasn't enough. Not for him, and not for her. End (view spoiler)[ This book made me cry. Adam Silvera is amazing at making you feel attached to characters, no matter their flaws. I liked that, while you know that they are 100% going to die, you never knew who would go first. Maybe it would be Mateo half-way through and then Rufus would be on his own. Mateo might have chickened out and stayed in his house, and we would have read him regretting not taking his last chance at taking risks. While you knew the ending, you never knew how the characters would get there, which is why this book is a new favourite for me (hide spoiler)]

Part two: (view spoiler)[ I am really liking this book so far! I really like the friendship that Mateo and Rufus have built and I really like how Rufus makes Mateo live a little more. Overall I am really enjoying this read and am already sad about what is going to happen. (hide spoiler)]
Part 3: (view spoiler)[ I'm really hoping that Rufus family makes it to him before Peck does, because I think that they all deserve a goodbye before he dies. I'm really happy that Mateo decided to call Lidia and that she gets to see him before he dies and spend time with him. (hide spoiler)]
Finished: (view spoiler)[ When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure how I was going to like it. Even though you knew both of them were going to die, you don't know how they will. I also was really hoping that they would die together so neither of them would have to watch the other one die. I really enjoyed how both of the characters brought the best out of each other, even though I knew they were going to die I was hoping they wouldn't. Overall I loved this book and it is one of my new favorites. (hide spoiler)]

Page 3-79/368 The Death Cast: (view spoiler)[Before reading this book, I knew I was going to cry. After reading the first part, I know I am going to cry. Dammit. So far I like both Mateo and Rufus a lot. I relate to both of them in different ways. I'm excited to see them interact. They seem very different people but I like that. I don't want to read them dying although it's my own fault because I was warned (see: the literal title of the book). I've only taken a break to write this and am about to continue reading. Page 83-223/368 The Last Friend: (view spoiler)[I love the quote at the start of this part. Also, I have some problems with Andrea.
The last sentence of Malcolm's chapter hurt me so much. I never want to not be able to say goodbye. It truly is a crime.
Generally, I try not to think about death but I can't help it when I read books like this. It's part of why I love them, they're so real and they make you think. I don't want to do what Mateo did and be too afraid to live my life.
I'm finding the random chapters from other people's points of view a bit strange and out of place at times but some of them are interesting - being able to see other perspectives and ways of dealing with death, their own or others'.
I also keep having to check if I'm in Mateo or Rufus' PoV but that's just me being slow.
I love Mateo and Rufus a lot and I'm enjoying seeing them grow together. Sure, they have their flaws but they're very real people and as flaws go, these two make up for them mostly.
School has been kicking my butt so far but the next part is much smaller so it shouldn't take me so long to read, unlike this part. (hide spoiler)]

Page 227-298/368 The Beginning: (view spoiler)[I actually finished this part last night instead of sleeping because I was so into it.
I'm still finding the non-main character chapters a bit random but it is sort of interesting how they all connect in some way to Mateo and Rufus. I'm sure there's a message here but I'm a little too tired to think about it. Plus, some of the characters have actually been quite cool. I'm struggling to feel invested in Delilah given how little we've seen here but I'm sure like all the others she'll factor into Mateo and Rufus at some point too.
With each new part I read, I care more and more about the relationship between these two. I'm really enjoying reading them becoming closer. I like that they're rubbing off on each other and making each other better.
I'm glad Mateo got see Lidia again. I hope Rufus gets to see the Plutos again but I don't want them to watch him die. I don't to read him dying! Or Mateo. I'm getting nervous and I'll probably cry. I don't want to Peck to kill Rufus but he probably will. (hide spoiler)]

I definitely enjoy Mateo and Rufus a lot. I think they are really good last friends because they balance each other. Rufus pushes Mateo to live and Mateo can keep Rufus from getting too wild and gets him to think about things that he otherwise wouldn't think about. It's wonderful. (hide spoiler)]

Page 301-368/368 The End: (view spoiler)[Mateo's regrets are so real and I really hope I don't end up feeling like I could've done more, like he does. I'm happy, though, because he's spent the day changing that.
Honestly, when I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure how it was going to be a realistic relationship when Mateo and Rufus only had a single day together. However, it actually has been. Their friendship definitely felt real and genuine to me and although I don't think under normal circumstances Rufus or Mateo would have kissed the other, I get that these aren't normal circumstances. The kiss was also an adorable moment and it made me smile. They've made each other better!
I'm so glad Rufus got to see the Plutos one last time!
Lidia and Mateo's friendship is so important to me and I love them so much. The scene when Mateo comes out to her... :) And her asking what she'll do without him and what Mateo thinks and ahhhh! I don't want to see this end.
Reading what happened with Peck... I was so sure that he was gonna kill Rufus but I'm glad he didn't. It was an intense scene to read.
I love Dalma's Last Message.
The more I read, the more the reality that I'm going to read at least one death hits me. I don't want to.
