Aidan (adribbleofink) | 53 comments I'll be there!

I'm appearing on three panels (one on Sat., two on Sun.), so hopefully some S&L folk come and check them out. :)

message 2: by Grim (new)

Grim (grimnir) | 40 comments first I've heard about it... if I'm not working i will

message 3: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments I'm going! My first big (I think? No idea how many people will be attending) convention, but I'm pretty excited :)
And an S&L meetup is an excellent idea!

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I'd like to, but it's way too much money for membership alone, even ignoring travel and accommodation. :(

message 5: by Art (new)

Art | 192 comments I will be there! Can't wait. Would be great to meet up with some S&L people. Feeling like I will spend the weekend being very overwhelmed by everything! Only been to small local cons before.

Veronica Belmont (veronicabelmont) | 1831 comments Mod
Don't forget to post author questions here too for Loncon!

message 7: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments I'm going. I'm on a panel on the Sunday. An S&L meetup would be brilliant.

message 8: by Neil (new)

Neil Clarke (clarkesworld) | 36 comments I'll be there.

message 9: by Ian (new)

Ian Welke (mewelke) | 13 comments I'll be there. Though if ever there were a conflict of wanting to see the convention and wanting to visit the city... wow. Managing to get some time before the con starts to tour at least.

message 10: by Fredrik (last edited Jul 31, 2014 01:31PM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments Being a complete Worldcon neophyte and not knowing a soul there, my schedule is as flexible as flexible can be! I'll probably want to catch the friday night concert and a bunch of other panels and things, but... well, what kind of get-together are we talking about?

message 11: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments No, that sounds like just the ticket. We just have to propose a time and a place; the earlier the better, yea? I have no illusions we'll form a tight-knit group of companions, but it'll be nice to at least have a _chance_ to meet again/recognise some people before the con is up :)

message 12: by Ian (new)

Ian Welke (mewelke) | 13 comments Always happy to have a drink. And it would be great to meet a few folks if schedules allow.

message 13: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments I like the idea of some S&L pre-Hugo speculation! I'm on two panels, Friday at 4.30 and Sunday at 12.00* but otherwise free. I'd suggest meeting somewhere in the hospitality/con pub area on the Thursday or Friday, but I suspect that area will get insanely crazy busy considering how huge Loncon is numbers-wise. Anyone have a better suggestion?

*Totally nervous about being on panels, but please come along if you are interested in worldbuilding. I'll be attempting to add some archaeological perspective to the discussions. Friendly faces would be nice!

Greg | 83 comments Elizabeth wrote: "I'm going and it's going to be my first convention so I'm slightly terrified. "

Same here and I'm in favor of a meetup but don't know enough about the convention or the site to offer any suggestions.

message 15: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments Hey all,
My wife and I will be present on Saturday and would love to meet up with some fellow S&Ler's. There are tons of places we can meet up both inside and outside. What time would we do this? We could meet up in the evening so we don't miss anything? Also, does anyone have a decent camera to do some group pics and maybe some video to send in?

message 16: by Louise (new)

Louise (lowies) | 56 comments I will also be attending (also my first big con) and would love an S&L meet-up. I will be there the whole con, but I agree with Fredrik that an early meet-up might be better.
Or we could have more than one to make it possible for more people to meet. I'm thinking one meet-up on Thursday or Friday and one on Saturday or Sunday? If some of us only can come on the early and some on the late and some on both, no one will feel left out.
Or am I over-thinking this? I have a tendency to do that...

message 17: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments Excellent, Elizabeth; you are forthwith nominated chief scout for the Sword & Laser Squad! We eagerly await your report. ;)

Regarding the crowds and availability of meeting space, I'm at a loss for what to expect. Fortunately it's not a mega-huge con, so there will only be thousands of people instead of TENS of thousands of people! As for time, I think there will be an rpg.net meetup on friday, so how about having the S&L gathering on thursday?

Btw; how many of the Hugo nominees have you managed to read? I only caught a sampling, I'm afraid, but I voted for what I could.

message 18: by Fredrik (last edited Aug 04, 2014 01:48PM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments @Guy and @Louise: No reason we can't aim for a meetup on thursday and saturday both (just to pin down two days).

Also, I do mean to bring my dslr camera. If ever there is an occasion for lugging it around, a WorldCon sounds like one of them.

message 19: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments Ok, so I can do the Saturday for sure, are we going to do an evening or morning meet up? Sorry for pushing this, I like being organised.

message 20: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments So Saturday 8pm? Where shall we meet up?

message 21: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments Brilliant stuff! So, so, so excited for World Con!

message 22: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments How about Thursday at 6 and Saturday at 8 if we are still interested in having two meetups? It would be nice to meet new people at the start of the Con, if others are interested but I'm happy to just do Saturday as well.

I hear there will be a big tree in the fan village/hospitality area that would be easy to find. Should we start there until Elizabeth can let us know the results of her scouting for a good gathering location?

message 23: by Greg (new)

Greg | 83 comments Sounds like a plan

message 24: by Fredrik (last edited Aug 13, 2014 02:11PM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments Let's make it so!

Hmm... Does anyone have the materials to make an S&L sign?

message 25: by Jeremie (new)

Jeremie | 25 comments I'm leaving to take the train for London.
See you guys there.

message 26: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments It has begun!
First impression: it's cold! So cold in fact, that I've had to go back to my hotel to dress up a bit. They're certainly not skimping on the air conditioning. And I'm even more glad I decided to book into one of the convention hotels.

message 27: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Hooper (vickythinks) | 18 comments I'll be arriving at Loncon tomorrow, so would love to come to the Saturday meet up if it's still on? :-)

message 28: by Lonnie (new)

Lonnie Smith (readwithmybrain) | 47 comments Loncon eh? I should probably go just because of the name...

message 29: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Hooper (vickythinks) | 18 comments Great! :-) Looking forward to it!

message 30: by Fredrik (last edited Aug 14, 2014 08:29AM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments I'll be looking for a sign at six!

message 31: by Louise (new)

Louise (lowies) | 56 comments I will also be by the tree at six.

message 32: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments By the tree at 6 sounds great. I may already be drinking a pint nearby *looks innocent* Loncon's really big ok? My feet are sore, I need to sit down!

message 33: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments Ok I'm here already sitting under the tree by the Tardis. No sign but drinking a pint of cider, looking forward to meeting new people and talking sword and laser books.

message 34: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments well, that happened.

And it was great!

message 35: by Greg (new)

Greg | 83 comments I agree, nice meeting all of you. Hope too see you all again Saturday night if not before.

message 36: by Art (new)

Art | 192 comments So we,re still meeting Saturday at 8 under the tree? Couldn't make Thursday. Hope to meet you all soon

message 37: by Art (new)

Art | 192 comments P.s I have no internet so will be under the tree. Please come and find me if I am in the wrong place. I am borrowing a preindustrial I pad right now.

message 38: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments Did the meetup happen? I was there but got caught up on the other aide of the xcell! How did things go?

message 39: by Guy (new)

Guy Morley | 14 comments Wasn't it an incredible day though?!

message 40: by Phil On The Hill (new)

Phil On The Hill (philonthehillexon) | 263 comments It has been great to meet people. I have had a great time and still a day to go! Hats off to Elizabeth as a driving force for organising us.

message 41: by Fredrik (last edited Aug 17, 2014 03:27PM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments Two meetups, and both awesome! Great meeting you all you; you really made my con :)
Too bad you couldn' make it, Guy. Kind of want to go on partying, but I feel rather exhausted by all the crowds and business...

message 42: by Phil On The Hill (new)

Phil On The Hill (philonthehillexon) | 263 comments From my perspective Loncon 3 was a great success. First of all because I met some real fun and interesting people to talk about the books I love, secondly because there was so much do do (actually often several things at the same time) and finally because I do live in London so it was easy. A bakers dozen new books to read and another list as long. Next steps are to ensure I stay in contact. I suspect this Worldcon will take some beating. That said, Good luck to Spokane.

message 43: by Jeremie (new)

Jeremie | 25 comments It was so great meeting you guys. I had such a great time at Loncon.
Now I'm back home and sad that it's already over.

I hope to see you soon at another convention.

message 44: by Art (new)

Art | 192 comments It was really great meeting you guys. One of the highlights of an incredible weekend!

message 45: by Louise (new)

Louise (lowies) | 56 comments Yes, this was awesome. It was great meeting everyone and hanging out. (Sometimes maybe later than advisable.)
And the con was so amazing. I now have several new books and authors to read (unfortunately?).

message 46: by Phil On The Hill (new)

Phil On The Hill (philonthehillexon) | 263 comments So pleased that I am not at work.

message 47: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments I am at work (but would have liked not to be), though fortunately I don't have a job where it's crucial for me to be there on time at 8, since a mix-up at the airport meant there was no bus to get me home until 3 AM last night. >_<

message 48: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Hooper (vickythinks) | 18 comments Was so much fun meeting you all, and Loncon was fantastic! Also, huge congrats to Aidan for the Hugo win! :-)

message 49: by Vickstar (new)

Vickstar | 23 comments Agreed, it was fantastic to meet so many of you and very excited for all the new books I need to read now. Many many huge thanks to Elizabeth for getting us organized and congratulations to Aidan on his win.

And yes, definitely UK folks should try and get to Eastercon. Looking forward to it!

message 50: by Fredrik (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments It lasted long enough, but I'm still sad it's over. And that similar events in Norway are so few and far between. I'll just have to keep my eye on interesting international events to attend!
