I think fiction, a boy gets one of those little foam things that you put in water and turns into a little foam animal except his doesn't stop growing and it turns into a magical alligator or crocodile

I read this book like 6-7 years ago and I cannot remember what it was called. More details: The boys mother left (or maybe he thought she died, don't remember too well) and so his father remarried. The boy goes to this mysterious circus that appeared like overnight and finds out that his mom was actually a part of the circus. I think he also found like picture books or something in his attic.
