Dewey's has an Instagram so I follow that and their hashtags so I can see what others are doing. There was a photo challenge every hour and I also posted what I was reading when I switched to a new book and when I finished. This was my first Dewey's using Instagram.

This will be my third year reading only King in October. And now I'm starting to branch out to his family too, throwing in some Joe Hill!

Best time of year for reading Stephen King. Or Joe Hill. :-) I tend to do more horror or dark fantasy this time of year as well. Most of my audios for the next couple months will probably be of those genres.

Listening to It by Stephen King right now. Started it yesterday in honor of It Chapter 2 being released tonight in theaters. I am going to see it tomorrow, first showing of the day at Alamo Drafthouse since I'm off work. I read it years ago, probably at least 25 years ago now and even though I've not gotten very far yet since the audio is 44+ hours long, I am realizing I forgot a lot over the years. I also read it before reading Dark Tower so i did not realize how strongly connected It is to DT.

I own the behemoth in paperback and hardcover but I haven't read it yet! We saw Chapter 1 in theaters last year and will probably go see Chapter 2 this weekend. I DVRed Chapter 1 so we can refresh before 2. :)

I'm crazy excited that I'm going to go see it tomorrow! And I almost never got to movies anymore because they've gotten so expensive. I splurged though for this one and going to the drafthouse so i can get real food too. :-)

i originally read it in paperback years and years ago. I have a hard cover of it as well. For a long time I belonged to a Stephen King Library Book Club that sent original hard covers of all his books. But they got pretty sloppy in their handling of accounts and shipping books on time so about 4 years ago I stopped getting them, even though I never actually canceled my membership or got a notice they were shutting down the club. But while I was a member, I got a TON of his books in hard cover and they are prized in my collection of books.

Even though I rarely buy print these days, if I had enough fun money to be buying books regularly again, I'd still be buying his in hard cover, even in this age where when I do buy, it's 95% kindle format.

I only have a select few authors that I specifically buy hardcover for. Everything else is Kindle or Audible. I don't really buy paperbacks anymore unless it's a library sale. I got a bunch of used King books on Better World Books this past spring! Like 10! :) I did used to get rid of the King books I read and didn't like but now I'm just keeping all because it's a collection!

No and I'm scared to! lol. I did add Joe in this year because I own so many physical King books and I needed audiobooks. Next year may be just King for reading and general horror for listening. IDK yet. lol.

message 373: by N. (new)

N. | 49 comments I spent one readathon reading the second half of Stephen King’s The Stand. I was really enjoying the first half, but the second half was a slog...the lesson that I learned from that experience is that I need to stick to short books on readathon day!

I have reall6 enjoyed some of the Stephen King that I’ve read, and was thinking about what short books he has available that I could include in a readathon. A few days ago I saw The Green Mile in a thrift store in 6 mini volumes. I thought of picking up he first three and including them in my readathon stacks, but didn’t. I liked the idea of breaking the book up into readathon-able bits.

Oh yes, I've made that mistake too. I need to keep things fresh on readathon day so I've got some graphic novels from the Dark Tower prequel series and Creepshow. Also, I may pick and choose short stories and include them one by one instead of a whole collection, like from Night Shift or Everything's Eventual. Even with King my TBR is constantly changing! lol. I would like to finish his new one, The Institute, by or on readathon day. Not even 200 pages in yet though...!

Good to know! I've designated Sunday as comic/graphic novel day for a personal readathon but I'm hoping to get a good chunk of The Institute read tomorrow.

message 377: by Abbey (new)

Abbey (abbeyhauser) | 194 comments Glad to see you back with King for October! I've been signed up for the readathon, but haven't gotten around to picking out books or really making plans yet. (there is a question lingering at the bottom, I got a little ramble-y in the middle lol)

My schedule with starting Grad School in August got me all out of sync with my Goodreads routines (luckily my reading has kept up though!). When I worked my two years between undergrad and now, I would always check my Goodreads notifications and group posts every morning briefly. I was so good into the groove of that! It's been a tad disorienting not sitting down to a desk at the same time every morning to check in with everything.

But I'm here now and getting ready to update my readathon page, do a personal practice readathon over the weekend (it's a 4 day weekend at my University, but I have absolutely zero plans) and get ready for next weekend.

Sorry for the long post - but I hopped on here for a question to you Elyse: do you have any graphic novel series or stand alones you really enjoy? I remember us discussing Lumberjanes on readathon, but I'm hoping to pick up some graphic novels at the library this weekend in prep. I just always get overwhelmed by the choices in this medium!

Oh wow grad school, you MUST be busy!! What are you going for?

I'm also doing a bit of a pre-readathon on Sunday. I'm stepping out of King to just read graphic novels for the day! I just have a hankering for some graphic novels. So funny you should ask for recs! lol. I'm fairly new to graphic novels, I've only been reading them for a little over a year but I've collected quite a bit in that time. lol.
Saga, Vol. 1 - This series, man. It's halfway done, the authors took a year-long hiatus, so there are 9 volumes out. It's gut-wrenching and raw and emotional. And it's phenomenal. There's a bit of nudity as well, FYI.
Skyward, Vol. 1: My Low-G Life - This is a complete 3-volume series and it's just fun and interesting. A breeze to get through.
Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft - Mr. King's son, Joe Hill's amazing graphic novel series. It's complete at 6 volumes and it's perfect for an October readathon!
Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery - There are 6 volumes out now and possibly a last one slated for 2020. Basically a female Dungeons & Dragons group and their travails. It's risque and adventurous. Some nudity in this one too but not that much if I recall.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Vol. 1: BFF - This one has 7 volumes out and #8 at the end of the year. A kid-friendly, fun series about a smarty pants girl and a T-Rex! I've only read the first volume but I will definitely be continuing.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 1: Squirrel Power - Up to 11 volumes with #12 coming out in 2020. I actually haven't read this one yet but it's been in my TBR and I really want to start it soon!! I've heard so much good about it.
Debbie Tung and Sarah Andersen are great readathon picks because they're quick, easy, and give some good chuckles.
The Complete Persepolis and The Complete Maus are a little heavier but great historical graphic novels.

Well, that should be good. lol.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments It looks like some version of this will be my final TBR:

The Institute physical own CURRENTLY READING On page 250, I do not think I will finish by Saturday but it will be my first read!
Night Shift physical own. 326 pgs
The Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead physical own. 208 pgs
The Dark Tower: Battle of Jericho Hill physical own. 144 pgs
Creepshow physical own. 66 pgs
Duma Key physical own. I would like to at least start this. 611 pgs

And I might throw in other non-King graphic novels since they are enjoyable to read in a big stack!

I have run out of King/Hill audiobooks since I don't want to overlap my physicals with audiobooks so I've chosen a spooky/funny series to listen to:
Bunnicula (audio) 98 pgs
Howliday Inn (audio) 195 pgs
The Celery Stalks at Midnight (audio) 144 pgs
Nighty-Nightmare (audio) 122 pgs
Return to Howliday Inn (audio) 116 pgs
Bunnicula Strikes Again! (audio) 116 pgs
Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow (audio) 160 pgs

I wish I had got on with The Dark Tower series. I read The Gunslinger and enjoyed it but couldn't get on with the second one so I've never got round to reading the third. Maybe the graphic novel versions are the way forward.
I've still got to pull together my TBR pile but I'm leaning towards some spookiness and maybe a Harry Potter re-read.

I haven't really liked The Dark Tower books. lol. I'm at Wizard and Glass. I will continue to try to read the series but not this month! lol. I have really enjoyed the prequel graphic novel series!!
