@Jessica, yeah my feelings exactly! The book does (or did to me anyway) leave you numb and scattered/mindfukked with no coherent thoughts.

Anyway I feel I missed a lot... poooof (mine and Siobhan's shorthand for our bad memories) + when you're five books ahead & half a month away, you don't remember much anyhow. All I remember is my continuous sense of unease and distaste. I should prolly go back and reread the last ten chapters but right now I don't really want to.

Nah, just go for it if you wanna... I know your friends and followers would like to see that review. When ppl are counting on you (and that respectable edifice you have built here) you owe them.

They were there first and they loved you longest. So how can I take you from that and bind you down to my paltry timetable?
*KICK* (but also a fair point, really)

Never thought I'd say this... but I'm not really feeling ML right now. Red Sister read lacklustre for me, though there were glimpses of pearls in the ocean... altho I think the real problem with that is that NN/GG/DD are still so fresh in memory.

Just listened to a contemporary verboten romance that kinda straddles lit fic/Americana for an OWL tourney reading prompt (genre farout of what you usually read) and it was really hardhitting... thought-provoking.

I'm only really planned one month ahead...but still I'm feeling like I wanna hare off on a limb and erratically read a whodunit/killer thriller (love those!!)/memoir or even something Lonesome Dove-ish (but not that big). Approaching fantasy burnout, I guess. And my usual kind of palate cleansers (vanilla historical romances, dark fairytale retellings) didn't do it either.

That said, if you'd clear any week in June and will give me a slot... I'd really like to crack on with the Abercrombie or we will never get to A Little Hatred + Tenfingers is waiting for us...

But HEY!! Your reading mojo is back :))

EDIT Oooop I forgot to add the *kick* don't go being all serious now....

Wow!!! I'm impressed!! Well done. You can have your choice of careers for the NEWTs with all those completed. Especially since you passed DADA which features as a requirement in quite a few of them. Roll on the NEWTs 🥳🥳. We passed quite a few of the same subjects so once the NEWT prompts are released we'll have see if we can arranged a buddy read or two during it 😊

Hailee | 2762 comments Yeah I am.

I'm actually going to extend mine into July. G the host said that was ok to do on her Patreon discord thread. That way I can do more of the prompts than I would be able to do in the week of the official readathon. I'm in the middle of setting a rough TBR right now.

:D and whose fault is that? I missed y’all….

How goes the reading? Last I checked you were mired in outstanding commitments + random stuff you were just gritting your teeth and getting over with…

Did you read any more Abercrombie while I have been away? Bcuz I didn’t and I think Tenfingers waited for a long time and then progressed with Red Country. We really should get a move on to catch up with her, don’t you think? Or Ole Joe will write yet another trilogy before we even get to A Little Hatred. Anni was asking me to get on with it already…

Zaara | 4273 comments I’m doing the Creature Creation Readathon to support Kirby’s new booktube channel. It is fun and easy and just the thing to get me back into the genre reading habit. So these are the books I hope to read next month. BRs welcome.

Kirby's announcement video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXK7t...

1. Book featuring witches: The Highland Witch by Susan Fletcher

2. Book with fire or water on the cover: The Cipher (Nina Guerrera, #1) by Isabella Maldonado

3. Book recommended by a friend: The Binding by Bridget Collins

4. Standalone: Hyde by Daniel Levine AND/OR 5. No Exit by Taylor Adams

6. Series BR: City of Stairs (The Divine Cities, #1) by Robert Jackson Bennett

7. And also I want to read some Neil Gaiman because… October…

More of the same, it seems lol. I've started a great many good books but finishing seems to be my issue now. It's like I get halfway through and hit a wall.

Audiobooks have gone better, if somewhat slow at times. I do get through them at least. Finished the Legends of First Empire by Sullivan.

As for Abercrombie, I listened to Best Served Cold but haven't gotten back in those waters. I've been kinda itching too, with the new release and all...

Ever read any Steven Brust? Take a look at the Buddy Read Invite thread as they're talking of doing a Vlad Taltos read that I've tentatively thrown my hat in...

message 931: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Re Steven Brust, nope not yet but I will check it out. The prose seems so very prosy...that quote!!! There's a reason Dumas remained forever on so many ppl's TBR. I think the only one I got thru was Man in the Iron Mask and that was when I was in school. But it could be fun to see Brust take it to the extreme on purpose.
Lemme know if you like it.

Chris wrote: "As for Abercrombie, I listened to Best Served Cold but haven't gotten back in those waters. I've been kinda itching too, with the new release and all..."

We really should mush on. I don;t want that either of us go it alone because I KNOW the other one will then never get on with it. Will you have time in November, you think?

How was Legends? I found Riyria slow to start with but the uptick was steady and sure. I liked the prequel series more and felt we got it so right by reading it AFTER knowing the end of the story. So many easter eggs,

message 932: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments Really, Brust's prose in the Vlad books is much more simple. He moves it along with a lot of dialogue.

Legends was good but I got kinda worn out by the end after plowing through 6 audiobooks.

That said, might be time to get some Abercrombie audio going again soon.

Mel | 2360 comments *pops by with some hot cocoa*

Hey Zaara, we're reading completely different things now, but it's been so quiet around here lately, it's good to see you around. Glad you enjoyed City of Stairs. One of the first Buddy Reads I participated in here in 2017. If you finish the trilogy, I'd read this blog post I'm reminded of by Bennett, recalling a song that gave him inspiration for how to end Miracles.

https://www.robertjacksonbennett.com/...

I know you haven't read much Kingfisher, but I'm super excited to start Paladin's Hope which just came out. Sha's reading it too.

Looking forward to future BRs together. <3

Zaara | 4273 comments Hot cocoa is the best.
Hi Mel!!
It's nice isn't it when you begin with a toppin' one? My first BR was John Gwynne's F&tF which I didn't really take to much...you should read Mayim's reveiws of the series... >:D

But I may give it another chance someday (it's very very low on my priority list) since I own the beautiful physicals...but have you noticed how lucky John Gwynne gets with book covers? Faithful and the fallen are beautiful books (to look at) and I just saw the cover of The Shadow of the Gods and that + "Nordic fantasy" had me even wanting to give another chance but luckily the first page of reviews are either gush or hate and a few of them were all "poorly executed dribble etc" so now I'm really torn.... The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga, #1) by John Gwynne

Thanks, I sure will check that blog post out once I get to Miracles. I go on Tor and rootle around the RJ Bennett tags a bit but tried to avoid anything too spoilery.
I'm still a bit mad at myself for reading an uncovered post on the BR thread but it's kinda unavoidable since it's up top when the page loads.
RJB posted a really nice GIF of Mads as Sigurd. I'll edit this post with the link once I find it.
Its kinda too late for me to catchup with you and Sha if you are already on Book 3 but yeah, we definitely should read some things together soon. What series are you planning on getting to next year? What are you in the mood for right now?
I started to binge watch Petrik and Niki's channels and Petrik reminded me of Dagger and the Coin...god, I've had it on my TBR for ages. Ever wonder why its like that with Dan Abraham? Everyone likes and praises his work but then he remains on the backburner...and the flashier stuff which prolly isnt as good gets all the eyeballs. I really want to start FINISHING more of the stuff I start...

EDIT: @Mel here is the RJB link:

And this awesome cover:

Mel | 2360 comments I'm completely unfamiliar with John Gwynne, but... that is an epic cover!

Ooh, as a mood reader, it's hard for me to say which particular series I'm going to tackle, months from now. You can always check out my tracker for suggestions. Or our mutual to-read shelves for some ideas. The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble's Braids sounds like a potential fast and fun one.

What I'm in the mood to read next though? Probably Wild Sky, because MM fantasy is my catnip.

Of course you must come…the more the merrier… I always felt like Tenfingers, Lannister and I were the only ones left who had to catch up….man, I am so pumped at getting back to First Law…I’m really feeling all things bloody and dark nowadays, I watched a lot of Abercrombie interviews…and a lot of Stephen King ranking videos…

And re this on BR Invites:
Beena wrote: "@Zaara, aaahhhh, I'm seen you posting about your Prince of Thorns & Broken Empire re-read!! Perhaps…just perhaps…by February, you will forget A LOT of things? Do try!!! :D

Zaara | 4273 comments Melissa wrote: "Ooh, as a mood reader, it's hard for me to say which particular series I'm going to tackle, months from now. You can alway..."

Oh naw…Mel, you are confusing me with some properly organized person…or that my profile and shelves accurately reflect my persona or reading habits… heck, I didn’t even log in until the end of August so my 2021 stats may be a bit uuuh skewed…ergo, this galaxy is full of misinformation and black holes, I shit you not, so don’t you be using them tools…
Naaaaaw Bub, I never update or maintain my GR, and was debating just deleting the entire unholy mess because my shelves are all more like my reading self from ten years ago + my mess of hand me downs and inherited books from all over the place + random stuff most of which I have since read or decided to give away…or old interests that I don’t really care about anymore + wtf was I thinking picks. I keep them because they’re so shamelessly baaaaaad and showed my terrible taste. Additionally, I never maintain my GR or challenge threads… though they started off pristine when I joined this group and logged in daily, they just became a pain to maintain the more series I began and floundered in midway…

See, I wanted to post for you the GIF about smelling King's Landing from 5 miles away but I *snort* spared your elegant sensibilities and hey, my organisation is NOT that bad. I know what I'm reading and when.

Anyway, now I just use this thread (I kinda got attached to my tracker as a scrivening account of my dark deeds here, she’s a grand ole dame…reminds me of Olenna Tyrell) as a sort of catch all for whatever I’m doing in my reading life and update it with my good intentions, all of which I follow up on.

Ohk I will go to your tracker and check it our right away but I’m not a total mood reader. I like to plan ahead esp if it’s a collaborative read while still leaving some wiggle room to hare off and do my thing.

And to be fair, despite my messy threads and shelves and GR challenge I categorically do what I say I’ll do, so if you book me for a BR I will show up.

But I don’t keep a good decent or clean GR record…I’m sorry :( I am such a pig about updation... and of course I want to read something with you soonish.

If I’m not mistaken, according to BR Invites, Katie, Rob, you and I are slated for the Red Rising books sometime next year…was a date set by the way?

THIRD EDIT: To admit I have been secretly been stalking and slavering over the neatness of Narilka's series thread for a very long time. Whatta shine! How neat and clean. You can eat your sandwich off her thread....I also (I am very bad) have this insane urge to go there and post a big ugly picture of the sloppiest sandwich evaar...I am controlling my base urges because I actually like Narilka.
