Hi, I am Andrew a retired Chartered Accountant living in Gloucestershire in the UK. I was a member of this group a year or two ago but deleted my Goodreads profile for personal reasons. However, I am now back on Goodeeads amd aim to stay here.

I try to read widely but my main interests are lgbtq fiction and non fiction, science fiction and fantasy, literary fiction, classics, history and music. My husband also reads a lot which means there is no problem when I buy yet another book, but we do have a serious storage problem.

I am currently reading Dunkirk: Fight To The Last Man as my late father was evacuated from Dunkirk. He never really talked about his experiences in the second world war and I thought it was time I learnt a bit more about Dunkirk. I am also looking forward to reading the new novel by Alan Hollinghurst The Sparsholt Affair. I think that his novel The Stranger's Child is one of the best works of contemporary fiction I have read.

Other than reading, I love listening to music, both classical and rock, and I have also returned to playing the piano since I retired. I am also hoping to rekindle my interest in cinema and quality TV.

Zefi | 7 comments Hello Andrew! I myself have not spent much time on the group too, and I don't think I have even introduced myself properly either, but welcome!

Your father sounds like an interesting man, it's always fascinating to read about things that people close to us have in some way experienced. I have been reading a book by a Greek communist, active during and after the second world war, and my dad in fact knows him and has given me lots of insight.

I hope you enjoy your stay here ^^

Greg Welcome back Andrew - so glad to have you rejoin the group! I happen to be reading one by Hollinghurst now, The Swimming-Pool Library. I think of the three I've read, The Line of Beauty was my favorite though I quite liked The Stranger's Child too.

[book:The Swimming-Pool Library
was the first Hollinghurst novel I read and I have now read all of them with the exception of his latest. Although I would recommend reading all of his novels the three you mention are definitely his best.

I love Hollinghurst and especially The Stranger's Child, arguably his best. I had not hear of The Sparsholt Affair. Thanks for the head's up.

What do you think of the current Booker Prize nominees?

I must admit that I amn not a great fan of the Booker Prize. However, from this years shortlist I already have Lincoln in the Bardo sitting on my Kindle to read. Of the other shortlisted books I think that Exit West, Elmet and Autumn look interesting.

What do you think?

I enjoyed a number of Booker prize winners over the years and usually check their short list out. This year nothing appealed from the descriptions.

How com you're not a fan?

It happened years ago when I read Hotel du Lac after it won the Booker prize and did not like it. However, recently I have been reading some past winners including The Remains of the Day and The Sense of an Ending.

Out of the winners I have also read and enjoyed Rites of Passage, Midnight's Children, Disgrace, True History of the Kelly Gang and of course The Line of Beauty. So maybe I read Hotel du Lac at the wrong time for me.
