Formats Available: Mobi, Epub & Pdf

Review Due Date: October 16, 2017

Book Description:

The Breakfast Club meets Grimm's Fairy Tales in the lair of an adolescent psych ward.

Milly’s evil stepmother commits her to a pediatric psych ward. That’s just what the wolf wants. With bunk mates like Red, who’s spiraling out of control; Pig, a fire-bug who claims Milly as her own—but just wants extra dessert—Vanet, a manic teen masquerading as a fairy godmother with wish-granting powers as likely to kill as to help; and the mysterious Wolfgang, rumored to roam for blood at night; it doesn’t take long for Milly to realize that only her dead mother’s book of tales can save her.

But Milly’s spells of protection weaken as her wolf stalks the hospital corridors. The ward’s a Dark Wood, and she’s not alone. As her power crumbles, she must let go of her magic and discover new weapons if she is to transform from hunted to hunter.

Brandie Lea Slicer | 2 comments Here is my review of "Counting Wolves"

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to enjoy the book, after the first 3 chapters I was hooked. After finishing I just want to share it with the world. I would like to share some background. I won't be too extensive as it would take too much of the review, however, I do have experience with panic attacks (not knowing what they are), being diagnosed with PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder. I also served 10 honorable years in the USAF and possess a MS in Special Education. I'm an avid reader, and my dream is to write.

I also have spent almost a month of my adult life in 2 different Psychiatric Units, and was amazed at the research and detail put into the writing displayed by the Author of these environments. The staff do the best they can (usually), with limited resources and compassionate minds/hearts while the patients usually form a bond that withstands their time spent in the Psych Wards.

We meet Millie when she tries to progress through her day, eating and drinking very little, ( she must count to 100), between bites of food, drinking, going through doors, boundaries, etc., to "keep the wolf at bay."

Not only is she tasked at keeping the wolf at bay, she does this ritual to protect herself and others in her life. Unfortunately, they do not understand her behavior. Chief among these is her "evil" step-mother (Adriana), whom she is often left alone with as her Dad travels for work.

When Millie collapses in gym, Adriana takes her to the ER, where the Doctor recommends a Psych evaluation. From there, it is recommended that Millie be admitted for further evaluation into a Pediatric Psych Unit. Adrianna (believing Millie to be Anorexic & emotionally fragile), and needing emotional as well as medical help that is beyond her to provide, agree's to this.

This is when the story really begins to unfold. Part fairy tale, YA, mystery, thriller and just an exploration into the human heart, family, friends, and bonds that last, Counting Wolves took me by surprise and never let up!
A spoiler for your heart and mind if you will; you will meet characters that will forever leave an impression on you, a boy who claims to be a "fairy maker , the best dancer in the world, a doctor- when we first meet him, and many other magical beings as well, a pig - who likes to create fire, yet only to protect herself, Red, whose "wolf" seems to be the car accident that took her mother - or is it? Sleeping Beauty, why doesn't she wake up? Is it a choice? The ever menacing "Wolfgang", who is he? Why is he hidden away? Does he really prowl the night? Peter, the boy who believes he's really a fairy, that he can truly fly! The dark boy, with darker secrets. The nurse who finally reveals to Millie, the fairy tales really twisted it around over the years. It wasn't originally the "evil step mother", it was originally the "evil mother." So what is the wolf stalking Millie for? Or is it trying to protect her?

I hope to read more from this author and would love to see this set to a screenplay. I received this e-book complimentary. However, my opinion expressed here is my own unbiased.
Thank you,
Brandie Slicer
