Fiction read in 1990s. Bomb will be dropped and mother frantically tries to get to family. She lives in the country, doing house work in kitchen when she hears a radio announcement about the bomb, phone lines are busy.

Twenty year old book -- story line is a woman is home doing house work, maybe canning, and listening to radio. She hears an announcement that a bomb will be dropped, she drops everything and tries to reach her husband by phone, but lines are busy, children are at school and she is frantic to reach her family in time. Her home is in the country and it will take time, that she may not have, to reach her family.

I am sorry to say that I cannot remember where the setting was, I just remember that the family in the country, the woman needed a car to get to town.

I think that it might have been an atom bomb, but because I never finished the book, I do not know what type of bomb, nor if she ever reached her family.

I can remember that the woman is in her kitchen, listening to the radio and hears a news alert, goes into panic mode due to her kids at school and husband at work -- but after that I don't know, I believe that the woman got into her car and started driving towards town. Due to having to return due book to library, I had not read any further and do not know where the main focus was. Thank you for trying to help me!
