Caleb | 4 comments I read this book several years ago. (1995-2005?) I don't remember much. Only some people have the ability to control magic. I remember a scene where a smith (glass smith? blacksmith?) doesn't know he can use magic and while crafting a dragon figurine, accidentally channels magic into it and the dragon comes to life. The girl is sent from the mage community to find this smith and bring him back to the council. She refers to her hair (I think she's a redhead) as being a "magic toolbox" and that "all magicians have some sort of a toolbox where they can store strong spells". Hers happens to be extremely elaborate braids she puts in her hair. When she wants to access one, she undoes the braid and combs her fingers through the strands of hair. The energy collects in her fingers until she releases the spell. I remember she uses a lighting spell one time and an earthquake spell another time. She also had some sort of wind pets (I don't remember what they're called, it might be another spell). While walking through the streets of the market, people would stare at her clothes because they would flapping back and forth as if in the wind even though the air that day was completely still.
