Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Update from Whitney: Moderators can again send broadcast messages to all members. However, they still can't send individual messages to people they aren't friends with, unless that person has changed their PM settings to "anyone".

I'll broadcast an announcement for our October monthly books.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments What shall we read as a group for November? An idea:

Richard Thomas, Spontaneous Human Combustion

Please post nominations.

message 504: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 37 comments The book isn't available until February of next year.

How about something else by the same author? I have Richard Thomas's Transubstantiate on my shelf as TBR. I'd like to nominate that if I may.

Good idea!

Jaws R. (jawsr) | 3 comments Pharafaneelya Weirden's Black Book written by me, is my nomination for this Scaretober month.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Jaws wrote: "Pharafaneelya Weirden's Black Book written by me, is my nomination for this Scaretober month."

Hi Jaws, authors usually do not nominate their own books for the monthly reads. We do have an Author Promotion section, which would be more appropriate:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Books by Goodreads authors in the group do get nominated by other group members. It's also possible to get together with a friend and organize a less formal "Buddy Read". Our last Buddy Read:

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for November nominations. I'd like to have the poll up soon.

message 509: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 152 comments Narrow Rooms by James Purdy

I've been wanting to try James Purdy. This is the one I already have, but I'm also interested in reading In a Shallow Grave.

message 510: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Netanella suggested Richard Thomas' Transubstantiate, which doesn't seem to be available as a ebook. How about his collection Tribulations instead?

Purdy would be a bit of a departure for this group! I've read Narrow Rooms and think of it as queer southern gothic + torture porn. How about we go with In a Shallow Grave?

Adriane | 39 comments Just to throw another option out there, what do you think of:
The Ghost Sequences, by A.C. Wise?

Looks good! Thanks Adriane.

A general reminder: while authors usually don't nominate their own books as monthly reads, an author's friends/followers/etc have nominate the author's books.

In any case, everyone, please share your thoughts soon, so I can start the poll by the weekend.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for our December holiday monthly read?

A couple ideas:
Kevin Lucia (ed.), Liminal Spaces: An Anthology of Dark Speculative Fiction
David Demchuk, Red X

I like the theme of Liminal Spaces, and the selection of authors. Demchuk's The Bone Mother was one of our more enthusiastic buddy reads a few years ago. Really looking forward to both!

message 518: by Alex (new)

Alex | 8 comments I really enjoyed the collections In That Endlessness, Our End by Gemma Files from earlier this year and To Rouse Leviathan by Matt Cardin from a couple years back.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Alex wrote: "I really enjoyed the collections In That Endlessness, Our End by Gemma Files from earlier this year and To Rouse Leviathan by Matt Cardin from a couple years back."

Thanks Alex. Just checking: sounds like you've already read both. Are you planning to participate if one of them wins the December poll?

message 520: by Adriane (new)

Adriane | 39 comments I checked out Liminal Spaces and Red X and found both excellent suggestions, so I’ll refrain from suggesting something else. I also read and loved Matt Cardin’s To Rouse Leviathan, and I feel you can’t go wrong with Gemma Files!

message 521: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Adriane wrote: "I also read and loved Matt Cardin’s To Rouse Leviathan, and I feel you can’t go wrong with Gemma Files!"

Thanks Adriane! Since you've read the Cardin, are you planning on participating in the discussion if it wins? And you haven't read the Gemma Files but are interested?

I'm checking with you (and Alex, who hasn't responded) because participation in the monthly reads has been a bit low. If you guys plan on chatting about books you've read, that's obviously great.

I'd have to take a look again at the Cardin, because it's been a while since I've read it, but I am willing to participate if it wins. And no, I haven't read this specific collection by Gemma Files, but it's in my TBR list, and I'd be glad to read and discuss it if it wins!

message 523: by Javier (new)

Javier Rivero (javierivero) I suggest going for Cunning Folk from Adam Nevill (if it hasn't been read yet)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Javier wrote: "I suggest going for Cunning Folk from Adam Nevill (if it hasn't been read yet)"

Thanks for the nomination, Javier. I'm pretty sure we haven't read Cunning Folk.

I see you're currently reading it for the 3rd time. With the poll voting delay, we probably won't be able to start for another week. Just checking: you do plan on participating in the discussions if Cunning Folk wins?

message 525: by Javier (new)

Javier Rivero (javierivero) Hello! Yes I will participate :D

I don't know why my Kindle keeps updating Goodreads with this book as "read" I change its shelf every other day back to "Want to read" so probably that's why it looks like I've read it 3 times

I was having the same issue with my Kindle. I think it happened if I skipped ahead to end of the book for any reason, but it was annoying enough that I turned off the Kindle communication with Goodreads.

Video_ouija | 36 comments Cunning folk has been on my list for a while

message 529: by Video_ouija (new)

Video_ouija | 36 comments I'll nominate that one, too (is that how this works)

message 530: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thanks for the comments and clarifications, everyone!

Since there are now five nominations, I'll withdraw one of my two (the David Demchuk novel, unless someone would prefer it?) Here are the four remaining:

Adam Nevill, Cunning Folk
Matt Cardin, To Rouse Leviathan
Gemma Files, That Endlessness, Our End
Kevin Lucia (ed.), Liminal Spaces

Let me know if you feel like making further additions, tweaks, etc.

message 531: by Robert (new)

Robert (rschmid) | 13 comments I just finished Cunning Folk so I wouldn't be joining the group read, but it is really excellent. Tighter that The Reddening and superior overall. I'm a big Nevill fan and this might be his best yet.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments What would the group like to read first in 2022?

Here's one of my favorite collections, that I'm keen to revisit:
Joel Lane, The Earth Wire and Other Stories

Please share nominations!

message 536: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 37 comments How about In a Dark Dream Charles L. Grant?

It's an old classic of psychological and paranormal horror, it's Charles L. Grant, and it's available electronically. I would think most libraries should have it.

Book published in 2021.

Oh, this is such a great anthology! Barron's is just one of many great stories in there, although it is among my top favorites.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for March 2022?

There are a few close runners-up for February, that could go in the poll again. I'm probably most interested in the Reggie Oliver collection.

Another suggestion is a recent favorite that I'm keen to revisit: Sofia Samatar's Tender,

+1 (as that was my nomination). Also, curious if there is any interest in "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia?

message 546: by Dan (last edited Feb 19, 2022 08:19PM) (new)

Dan Would we ever consider reading a drama? If so, I've read great things about Veronica's Room by Ira Levin. Here is a review from when the play was produced seven years ago: https://www.onstageblog.com/reviews/2...
