I think this was a book written around the 80's, but I could be wrong. The protagonist is a man who goes through some sort of portal and ends up on a planet where when you use things they improve and things degrade from lack of use. I also remember there being some sort of robotic machine thing - that may have been what the man went through the portal to fix.
