I read this years ago, and have read every Robin Hobb ever since. I decided to re-read my old paperback for this discussion. Unfortunately only got half way through before I left for vacation, and didn't want to weigh myself down with books on an overseas trip. Wanted to finish it so much I was willing to buy an ebook, but the signal strength on the boat won't let me download. So sad .....

Helen Read it years ago and did a massive series reread a couple of years ago. It's brilliant.

Elizabeth | 14 comments I'm not sure why haven't read this before, but I downloaded and started today. Should be interesting.

Todd | 29 comments I'm about 1/3 through it and so far I LOVE THIS BOOK. This trilogy has been on my to-read list for awhile, but now that I'm reading it I wish I hadn't waited so long to start reading it.

The storytelling is wonderful, the world building is unique and interesting but also familiar in the best ways, the author's writing style is among the best I've ever read, I could go on and on and on, but suffice it to say, I'm well pleased with this book. :)

DivaDiane SM | 241 comments I read this in 2001 AFTER reading the LiveShip Traders Trilogy (which I still think is the best of all of them, but maybe I'm just nostalgic). It's no problem to read them in that order, but I had no clue about the common character... No matter though really, I'm not sure I would have figured it out regardless.

ANYWAY, I'm so glad that this was the BOTM and that the timing was so perfect, what with me being able to dig out my old copy (no easy feat it being in Germany and me living ATM in Paris) and then being on a beach vacation and for the first time in YEARS I was able to read a novel from cover to cover in less than a week. Ahhh!

It's almost better the second time! Being reintroduced to the characters was so much fun! She seemed to always build up to the entrance of a new character and knowing what was coming let me pick up on details, which I'm sure were lost on me the first reading, or that I didn't realize the significance of what she was describing. But since it's a first person narrative, it's natural that we be in the dark just as Fitz was, but this time I wasn't!!! Tee hee!
