He finds out Princess Lyrna was in on or at least aware of her father's plan to kill Al Hestian as well as Vaelin's part.
Lyrna it seems did warn Hestian to beware of Vaelin -guilty conscience? - but she still never told him the full extent of what she knew.
So now Vaelin's a Lord and had his own regiment. I can see loyalties getting complicated and blurred.
I think despite his changing his mind, there are going to be consequences. Al Hestian was a much better man than his father, and Vaelin became friends with him.
Like the Nonbeliever's husband, I think this is another death that will haunt him the rest of his life.

So Vaelin put down the Cumbrael rebellion. He was able to use his Blood song to find Nortah and Cella. Looks like there is a seventh order "ghost" who is able to possess people. We also learn that the Aspects are well aware of the seventh order. Lots of little revelations and some nice action this part. Hard to pin down one thing I particularly liked because I liked everything and just wanted to keep listening.
The real takeaway is that there is a seventh order that was divided and perhaps is divided still with ghost man, whoever that is, maybe wanting to subvert the order.

That's exactly how I felt too. Although the stuff about the mysterious 7th order was perhaps the most intriguing part for me.

I am glad Brother Nortah was spared in the end and Vaelin did not kill him. Though I found his abrupt change of character in the 1 week he had been with the gifted a little strange. Of all the Brothers, with the exception of maybe Brother Barkus, I would have expected Nortah to have the least in common with them. Though he has been undergoing a transformation since his fathers death.
I understood that Nortah was immune to Shella's touch, but is he gifted, beyond her not being able to enslave him?

That's a good question. We're still not even sure why he's immune.

Most striking are the abrupt changes. E.g. Vaelin goes on the long hunt to punish Nortah; it seems to me that there would be no trial but instant death penalty; instead, Vaelin meets his brother and somehow decides to throw away his former conviction and order and save Nortah.
I'd think these changes need proper motivation. Instead, they mostly came without forewarning, like so many actions.
Deus ex machina is one of the most prominent literary figures in this novel.
It always strikes me interesting how varied peoples tastes are. I absolutely loved this book. One of my top reads of last year, and you seem to be having a very different experiance.

In regards to this part, I guess in my mind Vaelin wasn't necessarily planning on killing Nortah. That is why he went on the 'hunt' by himself, so that he could evaluate the situation and decide. Of course he had to tell people that it would be an execution because that was the law. I don't have my book with me, and I may have just read it that way, but it was my interpretation, which made the following events much more consistent.
