SOLVED. Similar to Lost World. [s]

Several years ago, I read a book that reminded me a bit of Lost World by Michael Crichton. What I can remember:

- Starts off on a research ship, but I think their being filmed for a TV special
- An island is involved and I believe it's a volcanic island that has sheer cliffs all around
- Somehow most of the characters end up on the island
- Due to the unique structure of the island, evolution has taken a strange turn and the creatures on the island are unique and some are extremely deadly
- Once on the island, characters spend quite a bit of time trying to survive and some don't
- For some reason, I think it's a one word title
- At the time I read the book, I thought it would make a great movie and the author's website mentioned that he had sold the movie rights
