I would've read this book in the early 2000s, maybe 2002-2007, although I don't know if it was new then or not (my mom had an expansive collection of romance novels, some new, some old, to read from). It's a steamy historical romance-- I don't have the exact timeline, but I'm inclined to say medieval as I remember lots of slinking around a castle and bedchambers and servants. I seem to recall a steamy scene in a tent at camp set up by H's soldiers. The H has known the h since she was younger, and perhaps even saw her betrothed to someone else. The husband or husband-to-be is not around (presumed dead? just away? I'm not 100% sure) and H/h are drawn to each other despite their best attempts. There may be a subplot where the two are uncovering the poisoning of the heroine's father, potentially by his mistress or her lady's maid. I believe a child is conceived. At some point, on the run from the villain, the heroine and someone else take shelter in either a cave or a church or something equally sort of almost eerie.

I wish I had more, but maybe this will ring a bell with someone.

Kenzie (echolikebells) | 3 comments Oh! It's also possible that the hero has known the heroine since she was quite young-- maybe since she got married? Or he was present at her marriage but had known her for longer? The poisoning could be from a different book, honestly, so if the rest of it rings a bell but the poisoning isn't part of it, let me know.
