Sarah | 18550 comments My library has an audio version of it but it's 17 hours. I do love vampire stories so I should really read this one but 17 hours is a lot to commit to especially if it's hard going. Perhaps I'll give it a go at some point!

message 702: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I knew the Wayward Pines books were available on Kindle Unlimited, but I just realized narration is included! I need a new audiobook for my commute since I finished one this morning. This works out perfect, I can try out the KU narration feature and find out what happens next in this creepy little town!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sarah,
I don't think Dracula was a bad read. I think you will not have any issues getting through it and it is nice to have the original story behind you. There are so many movie versions, it is hard to focus on any one being really representative of the original story, except by inuendo. There is one scene that chilled me and I have never gotten it out of my head. I do not recall ever seeing it in any movies though. I have never wanted to read 'Salem's Lot though.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I should give Dracula a second chance sometime. I listened to a free Libra vox version with multiple narrators . it wasn't very good. Actually probably worst Libra vox I've heard

I have tried to use Libra vox, but my user experience has not been very good to date either.

I read this one. It was in my 50 Classic Books: Volume 1 that I bought for 99 cents. It contains the 1897 edition of Dracula. I started reading the books in alphabetical order and got to N before I stopped reading in order. It is still on my Original Nook, patiently waiting for me to read The Nigger of the Narcissus by Joseph Conrad. Someday I will get to it.

I agree. I don't get along with classics myself, but I fared okay with Dracula. The movie version Bram Stoker's Dracula with Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman, was pretty close to the book... close as far as movie adaptations go.

I have not seen that version, Janice. I may have to go see if they have it at the library or see if my TV still works and order it on Demand if they have it.

message 708: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments It's one of my favourite movies. Both Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman are at the top of my list of fav actors.

message 709: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments @Cherie. It is the best version of all, I think

message 710: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I 'm beginning The Storm Front. Thanks to the wisdom from Madame TuttiFrutti.

Piccolo Fortunato | 7 comments Anybody out there feeling stressed and in need of a vicarious vacation--although not without its day to day travails like power outages and water rising up above your boots-- The Venice Experiment: A Year of Trial and Error Living Abroad
Also read Venice: A New Historyfor some historical perspective-- scholarly, yet so engaging!

message 712: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I started Wayward on audio yesterday and I'm already loving it. I also started reading Jenny Pox last night. I'm not sure about it just yet. I'm interested, but it is too soon to tell if it is going to be a good read or not.

I've gotten one of the librivox versions of Dracula on an app on my iphone. I have found I have better luck with classics if I listen to them instead of read, but unfortunately it doesn't always work that way. I recently listened to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Journey to the Center of the Earth and I still struggled through both of them immensely.

There are so many classics I feel like I should read, but so far I haven't really enjoyed any of the ones I have made it through... except for maybe some children's books. Alice in Wonderland, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden I really enjoyed. All three found on librivox.

message 713: by Monifa (new)

Monifa (dramamezzo) | 9 comments I read classics every now again out of guilt or curiosity, every now and again I run across one that makes it VERY obvious why there is such a thing as a "classic." Dracula was that and I loved it.

I'm currently reading 1Q84 for a buddy read. Chosen because it sounded fascinating. It is great writing. When I'm reading it I feel as if I can't stop. When I eventually do I wonder, "What's the point?" So, so far it is lacking meaty substance for me although I still want to keep reading and do feel engaged.

message 714: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Monifa, I loved 1Q84. Long as it was, I think I read it in just a few days, because it was hard to put down. When I got to the end, I spent a lot of time trying to sort out how the different threads tied together. My husband hunted down a copy of Janachek's Symphonia, the music that is playing in the taxi.

message 715: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished 20th Century Ghosts and have started Kushiel's Dart. It's the final book in my Tasmanian Devil chunkster section and 30+ hours long. I wonder if I'll finish it before the toppler.

message 716: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished Horns for the group read and have started The Xibalba Murders for my left-over stew challenge. This was left over from last year's Alphabet challenge.

message 717: by Monifa (new)

Monifa (dramamezzo) | 9 comments Yes, I pulled up Janacek's symphony almost immediately to hear what he was describing. That was my favorite part so far!

message 718: by Lisa (last edited Oct 14, 2014 01:12AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Horrorstör which was my pick for October's Halloween themed read. I gave it 3 stars but my actual rating would be 3.5. The concept was really interesting and it was quite a fun read but I didn't find it scary at all. It had the occasional creepy moment but no more than that. It is not the best horror book I have ever read but it's not the worst either.

I am now going to start the second book in the 'Riyria Revelations' trilogy Rise of Empire for the chunkster challenge. I absolutely love this series and cannot wait to catch up with Hadrian and Royce again!

message 719: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments I'm trudging through American Gods and finding it reaallly boooring... I've read about 250 pages and I'm all the time waiting for it to pick up. The beginning was okay, but now the story is just not going anywhere. Such a disappointment after I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane. But I will finish it as it's one of my Chunksters.

It's a long roadtrip! Several other people in the buddy read had the same opinion as you Camilla! Things do all fall in to place though. It is quite a different read to Oceans!

message 721: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I struggled through and finally finished OCD Love Story.

Now reading The Woman in White for group read and going to start Finnikin of the Rock for chunkster.

I had the same. I read a couple of other Gaiman books before American Gods and I rated them all 4 or 5 stars, but American Gods just didn't work for me.

message 723: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm still reading Voyager. All the books in the series are very chunky and this one even has over 1000 pages and small print, so it takes me a while. I don't mind though, it's great! I just hope I can finish it before the toppler.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Just finished Cold Mountain that was such an excellent reading! I absolutely loved it.

Started yesterday All the Light We Cannot See.

message 725: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm still struggling through Second chance dog by Jon Katz...the book so far isn't about he dog at all, more about Jon losing and Maria's friendship/affair..I may have to forgo this book :(

message 726: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments I finished City of Thieves. I'll have to go check out the discussion that's in here somewhere. Excellent book IMO.
I'm in the middle of another Blake Couch book. This time, Snowbound. Also getting ready for my next chunkster read.

message 727: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I m in the middle of Storm Front. It seems till now a classic detective book (with all the clichés of that kind of stories, included the poor guy unfairly pressed and chased from the authority, the hard cop, the chick, etc.), only plus the ambient of magic and magical beings.
Will see if improves

message 728: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Harry Heathcote of Gangoil and The Enchantress (still need to write reviews). I started The Thirteenth Tale Sunday evening and could hardly put it down!

message 729: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Cherie I loved The Thirteenth Tale. It was a slow start for me, but once it got going, I couldn't stop!

From what I have seen, I think this the same for everyone, Kimey. I read the first 3 pages and then put it down, but when I picked it up again. I don't think I came back up for air until I was on page 173 or something like that. I intentionally left it at home today. I need to get some work done!

message 740: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I have over 100 pages to read in The Second-Chance Dog: A Love Story. I am determined to get through it within the next few days since it is quite rainy today, no matter how bad the book is...must finish it :-)

message 741: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Thirteenth Tale. What a great story! I also finished Blood Feud. Those Drake brothers are hunka, hunka!

I started the first few pages of The Day of the Triffids for the group read theme. I am still listening to Dragonfly in Amber.

message 742: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments I finished Snowbound today. It started out good, but lost some believability in the middle. The end caught me off guard.
Now I'm starting Doomsday Book tonight for my chunkster challenge.

message 743: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Snowbound sounds interesting, I will have to add it to my TBR shelf :)

I have this on my TBR list. I will be waiting to hear how it is. FYI - I think we are going to try for end of Nov or 1st of Dec for a buddy read for The Moonstone if you are interested.
I saw the author's name and my brain translated it to Wilkie Collins. Well you're still welcome to read the WC book with us.

message 745: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments :) I'll check it out. Wouldn't you know two library requests came through at the same time. I had to pick up The Name of the Wind along with Doomsday Book. That's a whole lot of pages, but I have both in my C. challenge. Moving into Mickey territory.

message 746: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We are going to do a Buddy Read for The Name of the Wind the first of Nov, if you want to join us.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Day of the Triffids and have started on The Light Between Oceans. This is for my Australia challenge. Peggy picked out for me. Still making my way throgh Dragonfly in Amber with Jamie and Claire. No hurry. I think I am going to give American Gods a try and take Mr. Gaiman on a Speed Date tonight.

message 749: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I FINALLY finished Second Chance Dog by Jon Katz! Not a book I recommend. The only good part of the book was about the dog, which was maybe a quarter of the book if that. The rest was about Katz, his divorce and what I would call an "emotional affair." Not my cup of tea and should be renamed to second chance marriage...

I remember really enjoying Connie Willis' Doomsday Book. Hope you enjoy it as much.

I finished and loved The Woman in White. I'm reading To Hell in a Handbasket just to pass the time until Toppler-opoly madness begins tomorrow! Expect to finish it tonight.
