Welcome Marion! It's so nice to welcome more people from abroad into the group! I definitely enjoy hearing about international readers experiences with reading authors of color and how their reading knowledge differs from our exposure to literature in the States.
I can totally relate to trying to cram a bunch of classic literature knowledge into my TBR Pile and finding that it's too daunting of a task. I hope that the WOCBC can help you find new and interesting reads you'd never think to read on your own. Don't forget to vote for a book for November. The polls will be going up soon!

Thanks!
It's true I never really gave much thought as to what gender or race the authors of the books I read were. Coming from France, I don't think we have that much awareness as to the condition of black people in the US, we learn about it in History class obviously, but we don't spend that much time on it. I learned a lot more about it myself when I was in University and took a class on American History.
But still; I don't know if it's just me or a general thing, but I feel like I haven't been exposed to non-white authors all that much in my life.
I'm trying to read more diversely, to pick up awesome books that not a lot of people know about (or at least that I don't know about).
I can't wait to see what the group chooses for the November read.

Ah! so nice to meet you Leonie! I hope that you enjoy(ed) Norwegian Wood! I'm glad someone else is just getting into classics besides me. LOL I feel like I'm light years behind since we mostly were taught World Lit from literary fiction and non-fiction genre in high school since our IB curriculum was more based on world cultures.

Aimée wrote: "Hi all, I'm Aimee, and I'm new to this group. I'm a 28 year old American living in Massachusetts. As of last year I'm done with school and as a result I am rediscovering books!"
Hi Aimee! ...sigh...You're living the dream now! LOL Between working and going to school, I haven't had the time to read anything, but textbooks since September. Are you interested in reading any specific authors or genres of books since you've finished school or do you just read whatever now?

Welcome Ana! I'm glad you've found us! Feel free to join us as we read Beloved by Toni Morrison this month. It's an African-American classic, but we have read a few books from world authors from around the world. Also, feel free to nominate books that you'd like to read as well.

My name's Anna (aka Annerlee). I live in the Shetland Islands, the most northerly island group in the UK, located halfway between Scotland and Norway where the North Sea and North Atlantic meet.
I recently finished studying for a degree in IT and now have time to re-discover books!! Yay!!
I lived in Austria for 10 years and speak fluent german - will also read in italian and french on occasion (slowly)...
I like reading sci-fi, mysteries and quirky books but I'm trying to widen my horizons. I hope you'll help educate me about other viewpoints, writers of colour and literature in general ; )
I look forward to meeting you all in the discussions.
By the way, I'm very pale skinned (whiter than white...) with blonde hair. You can't tell from my profile picture - which shows my multi-coloured dog 'Sputnik'

My children are adopted from China and we are all learning Mandarin. This year I've decided to read writers of colour exclusively, and I'm looking forward to some wonderful books. Thanks for having me!

My name is Marion, I'm 24 years old (not for much longer though), and I'm from France. I have a very small book Tumblr that I wish to convert into a proper book blog at some point.
I usually read any type of fiction. At the moment I'm trying to both stay current by reading some popular titles from the last couple of years, and at the same I try to rectify my lack of knowledge in the classics department (I'm interested in the sci-fi classics these days). But to be honest, keeping up with all the new releases and the old ones in order to build myself a general knowledge of literature is quite difficult.
Actually, that's a lie. I'd like to think that there is method to my madness, but I just really grab whatever attracts me...
I decided to join this group because I've realised that most of the stuff I read is based in the USA or UK, and are usually written by white males. And I want to try and discover new things and new point of views. I haven't read that many books by authors of colour, but those I did read, I enjoyed (The Kite Runner, The Namesake).
I hope that joining this group and trying to read the book of the month and participating in the discussions will help broaden my horizon and that I will discover new amazing authors or books that I would never have thought of picking up by myself.
:)
