I bought a lovely hardcover edition of Ajax Penumbra 1969. It is a prequel to Mr Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore which I really enjoyed.

I'll pick one up next time i'm in there."Trelawn - I was going to suggest Chapters. Last April, Hodges & Figgis didn't have Transatlantic by Colum McCann and explained it was because it was coming out soon in a new format. I think in Ireland you get large format paperbacks followed later by the smaller mass market paperbacks that are cheaper. But I had success at Chapters. I was buying it for a friend in Dublin who is an OAP and doesn't easily get out except to local shops. She lives near the Grand Canal near Adelaide Rd. When I mailed it from the GPO I told the postal worker the book could probably walk there:) It's be nice if Chapters offered a mailing service, but you can't have everything, and they have lots.
Enough good things can't be said about Chapters IMO. Sadly I don't get there as often as I'd like to.
I decided to circumnavigate the bookstores and bought a copy of 44 Scotland Street from abe for the princely sum of 60p plus postage :-)
So, the three books that I bought in Chapters yesterday were:The Guts - Roddy Doyle
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
I Am Mary Dunne - Brian Moore
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
After the Lockout - Darran McCann
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
All three together cost the princely sum of €17-and all three are new, which is great.
Question-do Chapters always insert security tags inside their books? I just nearly ripped a hole in the back cover of The Guts trying to take the tag that was inside it, off. :(
Oh, and further to the discussion the other day, the Audible daily deal today is none other than 44 Scotland Street-good value I'd say at $3.95! :)
@ Allan the universe is mocking me with that book. Chapters don't always use the tags but they are annoying as hell when you get home and realise your book has one. There is no delicate way to get rid of them.
Books I've bought at Hodges Figgis have electronic tags tucked inside books, but not glued. They are thin so they don't all out if you try to find them.Is the book "Mary Dunne" by the same Brian Moore? I think of him as having done most of his writing a couple of decades ago.

Jamie Lynn, maybe it is because of that book that you were hacked. The person lost the book draw but really really wanted it.
Barbara, I Am Mary Dunne is a new edition of a book written in the sixties-Moore died in the 90s. It was an impulse, must buy something before the shop closes, buy, but as I'm aiming to read all of his work eventually, I thought why not?!

I thought Moore had passed away so am relieved he has not returned from the other side. I do want to read all his novels set in NI and Ireland. I'd be interested to know what his books set in North America are like such as Black Robe. I see from Wikipedia he became a Canadian citizen which explains his novels set there.
As far as new books, I just got Straight Man by Richard Russo, Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor and Silverland: A Winter Journey Beyond the Urals by Devla Murphy all from Paperback Swap. I resisted buying 3 books yesterday - a book by Julio Cortazar (just published), a book on the Dominican Republic and I forget the third. I realized I wouldn't be reading them anytime soon, and I need to economize:)
Barbara, as far as I know, Moore published all of his novels while living in Canada, despite many of them being set in Belfast. There were 3 or 4 of his novels for €4.99 in Chapters, but I just bought the one, as I have a couple on my TBR shelf already.
How do all of you know what to buy? Do you carry lists of authors with you? Many of the authors that some of you mention buying I've never heard of. Are they new to you also and you just take a chance because the books are cheap?
Diane, I tend to buy books either from authors I've already read or the odd time, but rarely, based on blurbs I read while shopping-I do sometimes take a chance on a book because it's cheap, but only if the blurb appeals to me-the Audible daily deal is where I tend to do this most. I also keep an eye on my Amazon recommendations, newspaper reviews and podcasts, and of course there are also the recommendations from members of Goodreads Ireland! :)
Diane. I write a list every few months of authors i love , then research their next release yo plan and budget my purchases. To the list i add debut authors that interest me and taje a chance plus recomendations on established authors i havent read . When the list is exhausted i start again. I average about three a year.
I guess I just don't have the knack. I was in a book store the other day browsing on the reduced tables but didn't see authors I recognized except for some silly pop remainders. My to read list is too enormous to efficiently utilize. I left with nothing but frustration. I don't want nor can I afford to buy at full list prices very many books. That's mainly why I just use the library because I figure out bookstore shopping. I'm that way with clothes shopping too. I usually come home with nothing because I don't know what to get.
New authors or new books by established authors aren't usually on sale, are they? Not out here anyway unless they are bombs and need to be gotten rid of.
Diane why don't you pick a few from your tbr list and look for them on amazon for the second hand options. You can pick them up really cheap. I rarely read the same author twice and generally pick my books from book reviews in papers and online and here of course. It will save you the trauma of going into bookstores getting frustrated when they don't have what's on your list and nothing on the shelves looks appealing
I do that sometimes. I bought the two Gerard Stembridge books because I couldn't find them in the library. Everyone just seems to be having such good times in bookstores that I'm jealous.
I have to admit I buy a lot of Kindle specials but they are piling up virtually and I forget I have them. I belong to Paperback Swap and these days will look there is a book comes up (usually here) or I need a book for a book group etc. Also I have a long wish list on Paperback Swap and when they become available, they are sent to me. We have a big used book store in one of our libraries which is where I looked for Steinbeck books and was successful. Our library is great but I often have difficulty getting books read in 3 weeks. I don't go often because I am likely to come home with several books. I have piles of books at home and tend to read what I'm in the mood for. I think that's the key - I have to be in the mood:)
If they are not brand new you can often get them second-hand on Amazon. I get a lot from Amazon for 1 cent plus 3.99 shipping. I really don't buy many books. I get at least 4 a month to review (I got 7 this month) and then with my book club commitments, I am usually done.
I sometimes go with a specific list especially if I know there's going to be a big sale (like when Barbara and I's local indie bookstore does it's quarterly member sales). Other times it's usually just what ever I remember hearing about recently either from an in real life friend, a GRI member, or a book blog. I do have a spreadsheet of things I'm looking for saved as a Google Doc, but I usually forget to check it.
I also have do a lot more random impulse buys than I probably should, but they frequently turnout to be things I like.
Pre-vacation I picked up the latest issue of the Paris Review
On vacation I've visited two bookstores. The first was Amherst Books in Amherst, MA. I went to buy Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay which I've read countless good reviews of. On the discount books outside I came across Radical Utopias, three science fiction novels in one (all by authors I want to read) for $2.90. There was even no markings in the book.
In Amherst I also picked up (for free) So Long, Been Dreaming a collection of short science fiction. Sadly this one had some markings (but not excessive), since it's one a friend used in a college class.
In Vermont, I went to Bartleby's Books, which is supposed to be the best bookstore in southern Vermont. It was cozy and had a carefully curated collection. I focused on things I couldn't get easily elsewhere, so I wound up with two Vermont centered books (Thousand Words Or Less by Joyce Marcel and Never Back Down by Ernest Herbert) and collection of Iraqi poetry. The store also had tasty coffee.

I'll have watch my updates to see what you naked of Radical Utopias and So Long, Been Dreaming, Sara.
*see what you make...

You see right through me, Susan! :)
Last week I bought three books :-Jane Eyre (french one)
-Jane Eyre (english one)
-The Perks of being a wallflower
And, yesterday, I bought -Shirley, by Charlotte Brontë.
Ooo, I'll join in the Mary Barton discussion. I haven't read this one yet but liked other books by Mrs. Gaskell.
Mary Barton can be found for a free download on Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2153
Thanks Emma. Yeah I enjoy it very much ! I'm interested by what you're talking about, even if I don't know this writer and these books. Classics is always loved by me :)
It's Clouds of Witness next I think. I'm actually reading a Wimsey mystery at the mo, it's the latest one by Jill Paton Walsh.
And, where I can find this "Buddy Read of Mary Barton" ? I will add these books in my "To Read List" for sure, Austen and Dickens too.
I know Susan will be jealous and I broke my book buying diet to order the new Ann Cleeves Thin Air - #6 in the Shetland Series and coming out Sept. 11th. I ordered it from the Book Depository. It's not out in the US til next May. Free shipping and it cost $21.45. A bit steep but the hardcover was even more! And speaking of going off the book diet, I ordered a copy of The Shankill Butchers: The Real Story of Cold-Blooded Mass Murder by Martin Dillon yesterday.
In the mail I got 3 books yesterday. One is for work (students borrow and never return books), and one from Paperback Swap (so "free") - a Time Life book titled Brazil. The value of this title though is that the text was written by the great American poet Elizabeth Bishop. I also finally got the copy of Mexico City Noir I ordered a couple of weeks ago.
Emma wrote: "Perhaps in September? Is anyone interested in doing a Buddy Read of Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell?"
Okay, now that I know what a Group Read is, I will ask what is a Buddy Read? And whilst I'm at it, is the film done the same way - I believe it's Into The West?
