I'm tempted to read that book too, Maria. I have a sample on my Kindle. I loved the television series from the 90's(?).

I have a copy and it is supposed to be a great book! but I can't read a book that is nearly 1000 pages long except maybe in the summer.
For Christmas (in addition to the books I got from Declan and Emma) I got Wild Quiet and The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America's National Parks from my Aunt and Uncle.
I got myself Twenty Girls to Envy Me: Selected Poems of Orit Gidali, and finally I picked up at the library Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords, 1969-1976.

Local libraries don't have this but I'd love to see a copy Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords, 1969-1976I'll post my Christmas books later.
Books I got for Christmas :) (so far)Melancholy Witness: Images of the Troubles
Behind Closed Doors
Eavan Boland: Inside History
Insidious Intent by Val McDermid (from Susan)
Himself by Jess Kidd (Secret Santa)
Never Let Me Go (Secret Santa)
And these knitting related books:
Alterknit Stitch Dictionary: 200 Modern Knitting Motifs
Shetland by Marie Wallin
Jamieson & Smith A Shetland Story
Rubbish at posting at the minute, but I thought that I’d make the effort to post the books that I have either bought or received over the holiday period.I went to NYC with the intention of not buying any books, but ended up buying the following:
New York Rock: From the Rise of The Velvet Underground to the Fall of CBGB
All Hopped Up and Ready to Go: Music from the Streets of New York 1927-77: Music from the Streets of New York 1927–77
The Petting Zoo
Rock Junket: New York City: The Ultimate Source to New York City's Rock N' Roll Landmarks
Brooklyn Was Mine
Blue Money
Horses
Notice a theme? I should add that all books bar the Rock Junket one were half list price or less, so I felt obliged to indulge!
I also received two books from Barbara, for which I am very grateful:
Going Into Town: A Love Letter to New York (How did you know?!)
Midwinter Break
Certainly plenty to keep me busy over the next few months...

I didn't buy any books in NY:) But I have managed to order a couple
Used from Amazon The Summer Game for my GR Baseball group and
The Convictions of John Delahunt by Andrew Hughes
From Paperback Swap :
Late Innings: A Baseball Companion more baseball and The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey. and I almost forgot - Powells had a "buy 2 used books and get 1 free". I bought Gabriela Mistral: A Reader for the Geographic challenge, Maigret's Christmas: Nine Stories and Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Time to clean off the bookshelves.
Allan wrote: "Just as well we never made it to any bookshops, Barbara, looking at your latest haul!"Yes, I tend to completely forgot when I buy books online or request them from Paperback Swap, sigh:) And when they are for book groups I don't think they count.
This discussion thread always makes me smile. I’ve been very restrained, in that I haven’t bought any books in the past seven days.
I have just been notified that I won The Watson Girl There was only 1 copy in the GR giveaway. 1290 people entered and I won!!
Goodness Thomas, what luck! I don't enter giveaways any more since I only ever won two (and one of them was not posted to me or any of the other winners so I concluded it wasn't serious). I am now a NetGalley addict and am currently the proud reader of From a Low and Quiet Sea, Donal Ryan's latest.
I just found and order too many books from Thrift books, Amazon and Ebay. Yes I have an addiction for books. HELP! lol!

I have won 35 books out of 2760 entries--less than 2%. Don't give up. I have also won 18 books from LibraryThing out of 435 requests. One of those 18 never arrived

I have been lucky to win a few books every year. Usually it is by an author that is new to me. Some have been very rewarding. Somebody has to win. I enter several giveaways each week.
The only books I've gotten for myself are via Paperback Swap so they are acquisitions but not purchases. I find it easiest to economize when I don't allow any purchases. I have bought a couple of books for my students/classes. I did buy 2 Edinburgh guides - I am addicted to travel guidebooks.
I went to Waterstones armed with a £20 voucher yesterday and bought- nothing! Not sure what's wrong with me, but I've been very good on that front recently. Just wish I was as frugal when it comes to vinyl...

Vinyl is an expensive habit, it must be said - puts the cost of a hardcover into perspective!Remembered after my post yesterday that I had bought a couple of books recently- 'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' for my in person book club, 'Reservoir 13' due to recommendations on here, and 'Fatherland' and 'Do Not Say We Have Nothing' as Audible UK Daily Deals. Funny how these things sometimes pass you by...
